Little Ricky?s Obama-Rama Stem Cell Slam
2009-03-12 19:18:00 (And by the way, I also posted here.)Before I say another word, here is a Rasmussen link showing that 52 percent of those polled approved of President Barack Obama?s loosening of federal funding restrictions on embryonic stem cell research here (Rasmussen trends conservative, so that number is likely to be higher), with embryonic stem cell research enjoying the majority of public support in 2007 here, with even most Republicans supporting it in 2005, as noted here.So basically, there really shouldn?t be much more to say about this (at least, you would think so, though I certainly respect someone?s right to dissent on this matter). However, you can leave it to PA?s former Senator Man-On-Dog to wax indignant over it, as follows? Thanks to both high-resolution fetal ultrasounds and the recent debate over partial-birth abortions, opinion polls now reflect a pro-life shift, most especially among our youth.I don?t know how exactly that ties into the statistics I linked to above, but the fa...
The President on Stem Cell Research
2009-03-11 12:00:00 At this moment, the full promise of stem cell research remains unknown, and it should not be overstated. A Stem Cell Flip-Flop From John W. McBush?
2008-09-24 17:47:00 McClatchy Online, in a critique of a campaign ad by Barack Obama, tell us that they believe the Democratic presidential nominee went too far in stating that John W. McBush opposes stem cell research?"Stem-cell research could unlock cures for diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer's, too," says an Obama radio ad that's airing in selected states. "But John McCain has stood in the way. He's opposed stem-cell research. Picked a running mate who's against it. And he's running on a platform even more extreme than George Bush's on this vital research. John McCain doesn't understand that medical research benefiting millions shouldn't be held hostage by the political views of a few."This Media Matters post points out that McBush has indeed voted for the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007, and he voted in favor of it on another occasion also. However, this runs counter to his relatively recent ?pro-life? epiphany, something our media apparently doesn?t think is important enough to cov...

Stem Cell Transplant for Crohn's Back on the Table for me
2008-06-04 16:39:00 Well, I guess me taking place in a stem cell transplant trial is back on the table. I went back to my doctor and am now getting reasy to schedule a sit-down meeting to see if I qualify. Last time I had to get the Humira out of my system which is done. Another update, I have been on 20mg Lexapro for the past month. I don't notice a difference but my wife says I am less of an asshole. Anyone else here on Lexapro?Previous Post:So I saw the Dr. Shafran and Patty today. I gotta say these guys (Winter Park, Fl) are the best gasto doctors I have come across in the 13 years I have had Crohn's Disease. Anyways we discussed a wide variety of topics. I need to be Humira free for 3 months before I can start the clinical trial that is Stem Cell Transplant for Crohn's. The trial is actually a 4 stage blood transfusion that I am going to read up on more (and report my findings tonight). It seems pretty low risk, but there is a 1/3 chance I will get a placebo, (what, red kool-aid??) 1/3 chance I...

Watch a Dog Improve with Stem Cell Transplant
2008-05-14 19:33:00 Stem cell research is improving the health of dogs, cats and horses with the new technique of transplanting fat cells alone. The procedure is not invansive, takes little time to heal and shows marked improvement in arthritic, hip dysplasia and other bone degenerative diseases. The story of Dosha is fantastic and I will be interviewing a pet owner today who will give even more details on this remarkable stem cell transplant for dogs. Unlike human stem cell research for humans which has been stopped by the current Bush adminstration - animals are reaping the benefits of completely healing their conditions. The best part it costs 1/5th of a bone transplant or hip replacements currently performed by veterinarians which costs thousands of dollars. Your dog could benefit also from stem cell research and live a pain free life with more activity and bounce in their step. For a vet in your area contact:  http://www.vet-stem.com Stay tuned for further details, but watch this video...

Anti-aging Skin Products Launched From Stem Cell Research
2008-05-03 01:36:00 National Stem Cell has revealed that it is set to launch a new range of anti-aging products that have been developed using stem cell research.Tropelastin produced by human embryonic stem cells has been utilised by the company's subsidiary Decouverte Cosmetique in skin firming products, CosmeticsDesign.com reports.Chief executive of National Stem Cell Michael Cohen told the website that it is this chemical that can provide women with a 'glow' after they conceive. He added that the company had used pre-2001 stem cells and neither destroyed nor created any cells during product development. Some scientists have criticised the use of stem cell research in the development of cosmetic products because they say the technology is not yet advanced enough to deliver drastic results."The notion that you could do that with a cream is a little bit ahead of itself," dermatologist Dr Kenneth Beer told the LA Times. "It's a great piece of marketing because there is so much interest in stem cells."

Stem cell therapy is curing diabetes whats the story ?
2008-03-11 13:49:00 Following a study carried out in Brazil some doctors are claiming that stem cell therapy could be the cure for diabetes for type 1 diabetic sufferers. The use of stem cell therapy has previously been linked to illnesses such as Alzheimers and MND (motor neuron disease) but until now little or nothing has been said about a link with type 1 diabetes and stem cell therapy. In the study the results which were publsihed in the American Journal Of Medicine last year 14 out of 15 people in the trail no longer needed to take insulin injections and several have been free of the need of injections for more than 3 years.

Stem Cell Transplant or Surgery? Meet with Dr. Shafran Tomorrow
2008-03-03 04:01:00 to find out...I ran into Ira and Anita on the street today at a St. Patty's Day Parade in Winter Park (a bit early I know). Anyways after reading up on the whole stem cell and Crohn's thing I am nervous as hell for this appointment. However with nothing really working medication wise (Pentasa/6MP, Asacol, Remicade, Humira, etc), I am down to either letting it go until a major flare up, Surgery or this whole Stem Cell Transplant. I will post after I meet with Dr. Shafran and his staff.
Stem Cell transplant Crohn's Disease - Stem Cell Research and Crohn's Artic
2008-02-22 03:11:00 Long story short. I am now having what I think to be an allergic reaction to Humira. (I have had them to Remicade in the past). My doctor wants me to stop treatment and come in next week to discuss the possibility of a stem-cell transplant. I profess complete ignorance and in fact know nothing about it. Below are some articles that I have not even had time to read yet. In scanning them apparently they can cure Crohn's, something I did not understand to be possible. I meet with Dr. Shafran and his staff a week from Monday to discuss this. I plan on doing a whole lot of research in the meantime. It looks like it has only been done a few times (see below). Stem-cell transplantation prompts muscle growth in mice with muscular dystr
2008-01-21 10:43:00 Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center have successfully used embryonic stem cells from mice to prompt the growth of healthy muscle cells in the rodents afflicted with a human model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is the first time that transplanted embryonic stem cells have been shown to restore function to defective muscles in an animal model of muscular dystrophy. The researchers have revealed that their novel procedure involves stringent sorting to preserve all stem cells destined to become muscle. Upon experimentation, the researchers found that their technique avoided the risk of tumour formation while improving the overall muscle strength and coordination of the mice. Just like humans suffering from the fatal wasting disease, the mice used in the study also lacked a protein called dystrophin. “We envision eventually developing a stem-cell therapy for humans with muscular dystrophy, if we are able to ...

Derivation of human embryonic stem cell lines from parthenogenetic blastocy
2007-12-21 04:08:00 Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have tremendous potential for cell therapy of human diseases such as neurondegenerative disorders 1, and in regenerative medicine 2. Since the first derivation of human embryonic stem cell lines from IVF blastocysts 3, the field of hESC research has generated substantial interest, although certain obstacles still remain including limited sources of oocytes and controversial ethical issues 4 that have hindered further advancement. Parthenogenetic stem cells are regarded as a substitute for ES lines derived from somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), with higher efficiency and less ethical controversy, and proven results in mouse and non-human primate models 5, 6. Parthenogenetic stem cell lines have been extensively reported in mouse 7 and non-human primate models 8, 9 and recently in human 10, 11. Parthenogenetic stem cells have been successfully differentiated into neuronal cells in a defined differentiation system in monkey in vitro8, and another ...

Japanese Doctor Makes Stem Cell Breakthrough
2007-12-14 11:43:00 The debate about using embryonic stem cells for medical research has been known to be a very passionate topic for millions of people, both of whom are for and those who are against the research. There have been many proven positive results from the previous exams that have been created, that is was important to Dr. Shinya Yamanaka, a Japanese doctor, to create a stem cell reproduction that did not involve actual stem cells. For the last eight years, Dr. Yamanaka has been searching for a means in seeing is such a result would be feasible. Today, Dr. Yamanaka is pleased to announce that he is indeed one of the many new researchers that have found that there is new evidence to support that there can be reproduction and healing for millions of people through adult skin cells versus embryonic skin cells. The function of the adult skin cells is known to work just the same, and have the same healing properties. This is thought to believe that it will be helpful for those that will not be ab...

Scientists Cure Mice Of Sickle Cell Using Stem Cell Technique
2007-12-09 17:24:00 Using a recently developed technique for turning skin cells into stem cells, scientists have cured mice of sickle cell anemia -- the first direct proof that the easily obtained cells can reverse an inherited, potentially fatal disease. Researchers said the work, published in yesterday's online edition of the journal Science, points to a promising future for the novel cells. Known as iPS cells, they have been touted by President Bush and some scientists as a possible substitute for embryonic stem cells, which have been mired for years in political controversy. But researchers also cautioned that aspects of the new approach will have to be changed before it can be tried in human patients. Most important, the technique depends on the use of gene-altered viruses that have the potential to trigger tumor growth. "The big issue is how to replace these viruses," said Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Mass., who led the new work with co-work...

Stem Cell Research: Technology Vindicates Morality
2007-12-02 23:10:00 Stem cell research like abortion or gun control has been one of those issues that has split the country. It has become almost a litmus test for party affiliation and woe be the individual that doesn’t toe the party line be it for or against stem cell research. Charles Krauthammer lauds George Bush’s stance to stem cell research and reminds people of a point that the left always glosses over or quite frankly, lies about. The left will regularly accuse George Bush of stopping stem cell research. Which is of course patently untrue. What Bush did was to say that no federal research funds would be used for embryonic stem cell research. Private research was not affected in the least. When pressed on this point most liberals will concede it is true. Not surprisingly, some insist Bush has “outlawed” it in spite of facts to the contrary. When I forced one such person to admit that his response was that no meaningful research was likely to be done without governmental funds and oversight....
Stem Cell Issue Resolved? ‘Fraid Not [Retrospectacle: A Neuroscience
2007-12-01 07:46:00 Time has a great article about the recent breakthrough in stem cell research (that certain types of skin cells can regain pluripotency)–specificall-y on whether this so-called resolution to the stem cell debate might help the GOP. Stem cell research has been the albatross around the neck of Republicans for a while now. Its getting harder and harder to feign outrage over the moral ambiguity over a clump of cells, when thousands of Americans (who, unlike blastocysts, vote) die of varied diseases that may benefit from stem cell therapy. Bush’s repeated vetoes of federal funding for embryonic stem cell (ESC) research flies in the face of popular support, and is a act of hypocrisy by an administration who complains America is losing its innovative edge. As someone interested in research to test potential ESC therapies (specifically for deafness and Alzheimer’s), I look on with sadness as the US falls farther and farther behind more progressive nations who welcome the o...

What does it take to turn a stem cell into a cure? [Pharyngula]
2007-11-28 22:14:00 Last week, I reported on this new breakthrough in stem cell research, in which scientists have discovered how to trigger the stem cell state in adult somatic cells, like skin cells, producing an induced stem cell, a pluripotent cell that can then be lead down the path to any of a multitude of useful tissue types. I tried to get across the message that this is not the end of embryonic stem cell (ESC) research: the work required ESCs to be developed, the technique being used is unsuitable for therapeutic stem cell work, and there’s a long, long road to follow before we actually have stem cell “cures” in hand. A review on LiveScience emphasized similar reservations. Seizing on this one result as an excuse to end research on ESCs would be a great mistake. So let’s consider what it takes to turn a stem cell into a medically useful tool. One “simple” (we’ll quickly see that it is anything but) example is finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. We unde...

More Great News on Adult Stem Cell Uses
2007-11-27 07:04:00 There is just a ton of good news right now about the uses adlust stem cells have in treating illnesses. This will hopefully open more people’s eyes to the fact that embryos do not have to be destroyed for science to continue. In fact, adult stem cells are far more successful than embryonic: Thousands of patients with arthritis and multiple sclerosis are given new hope today by scientists who have developed a way to alter the immune system. Both conditions are caused when the immune system becomes faulty and attacks the body. Scientists have discovered that by injecting stem cells, the body’s building blocks, taken from a healthy donor into the patient they can effectively transplant the donor’s immune system and cure the condition. Until now, such a transplant would have been possible only by giving the patient aggressive treatments such as radiotherapy to wipe out the faulty immune system before carrying out a bone marrow transplant to provide new cells. But und... |
