MRI tracks stem cells in the heart.
2008-08-26 02:42:00
Now for the first time, researchers have tracked the stem cells in mice using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) from their bone marrow origin to the injured site. This opens up the possibility of finding some therapeutic treatment to direct these cells after a heart attack.Mesenchymal stem cells, or MSCs, are found in the bone marrow and can differentiate into certain cell types. They have been detected around heart injuries following a myocardial infarction (heart attack), but whether they come to regenerate heart tissue or to promote healing is still under debate.Using a series of MRI scans, Tom Hu and colleagues at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA, have tracked MS?s in a sample of mice. The researchers first transplanted into the bone marrow a few hundred thousand MSCs that had been labeled with both iron-oxide (a molecule that essentially shades out the MRI signal) and a special protein that fluoresces when exposed to blue light. The team then operated on all of the ...

Vet Stem Cells Save Dogs From Arthritis
2008-05-02 06:40:00
The new arrival of Vet Regenerative Medicine is here and the use of stem cells in animals such as Dogs, Horses and Cats is becoming a safe and successful procedure for arthritis in pets.   Unlike the embryo cells used in human stem cell research, this procedure uses fat cells that are harvested and re injected into the hip or affected area.  The cells then regrow or regenerate health cells and within 30 days there is marked improvement in function and healing with the cell transplants.   A company in San Diego called Vet Stem is the leader in Regenerative medicine using harvested stem cells from the fat cells in an animal which is then implanted into the hip or joint areas and the treatment has a high success rate.   The cells used from one’s body and using your own cells is far superior and heal more quickly without the problems of rejection from foreign cells such as in organ transplants.   Stem cells by nature can take on the traits of many kinds of cells and then rep...

Protein in Embryonic Stem Cells Controls Malignant Tumor Cells
2008-03-11 21:31:00
A protein that governs development of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) also inhibits the growth and spread of malignant melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, Northwestern University researchers have discovered. Metastatic melanoma, which develops from the transformation of skin pigment cells or melanocytes, has a death rate of more than 80 percent and a median survival of less than 7.5 months. The Northwestern scientists, led by researcher Mary J. C. Hendrix, additionally found that the protein, called Lefty, prevents aggressive breast cancer cells from metastasizing. Death from metastatic breast cancer exceeded 40,000 in 2007, with over 180,000 new cases diagnosed in the United States.Importantly, Lefty is secreted only in hESCs, and not in any other stem cell type tested ? including stem cells isolated from amniotic fluid, cord blood or adult bone marrow ? or placental cells. Results of the study, described in an article in the March 3rd online version of The Proceedings of the Na...

Panel of Stem Cells Meets to Discuss Religion and Medical Research

Announcement? Right here on this very blog, a panel of leading stem cells has agreed to discuss the contemporary stem cell tissue with none other than ?us truly? ? that is, my own personal cells, particularly the neurons, usually known in the collective vernacular as ?me? but by most collections of stem cells as ?whatever.? Best of all, despite their great distinction, these stem cells have agreed to a poetry-slam format. Thanks to Hayden for inspiring (?) the ?poem? with informed comments about stem cell research on my recent discussion threads. However, it isn't her fault; she couldn?t possibly have known that her comments would excite my brain cells in this manner. In fact, my own brain cells withheld information that the poem was coming until they started prompting my finger cells {?fingerus cellulose?} along the keyboard. Don?t worry; the poetic debate will use less scientific terminology. The debate is in process now, even as your cells are left to ponder the results while you ...
Human skin cells into embryonic stem cells
2008-02-12 18:56:00
UCLA stem cell scientists have reprogrammed human skin cells into cells with the same unlimited properties as embryonic stem cells, without using embryos or eggs. Led by scientists Kathrin Plath and William Lowry, UCLA researchers used genetic alteration to turn back the clock on human skin cells and create cells that are nearly identical to human embryonic stem cells, which have the ability to become every cell type found in the human body. Four regulator genes were used to create the cells, which are called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells. The UCLA study confirms the work of researchers Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University and James Thomson at the University of Wisconsin, first reported in late November 2007. The UCLA research appears today in an early online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences. The implications for disease treatment could be significant. Reprogramming adult stem cells into embryonic stem cells could generat...
Scientists Reprogram Human Skin Cells Into Embryonic Stem Cells
2008-02-11 18:33:00
U.S. scientists say they've reprogrammed human skin cells into ones with the same blank-slate properties as embryonic stem cells, a breakthrough that could aid in treating many diseases while sidestepping controversy.Human embryonic stem cells have the ability to become every cell type found in the human body. Being able to create these cells en masse and without using human eggs or embryos could generate a potentially limitless source of immune-compatible cells for tissue engineering and transplantation medicine, said the scientists, from the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers genetically altered human skin cells using four regulator genes, according to findings published online in the Feb. 11 edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences. The result produced cells called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, that are almost identical to human embryonic stem cells in function and biological structure. The reprogrammed cells al...
Scientists Create Three-parent Embryos
2008-02-05 18:28:00
British scientists have created human embryos with three parents in a development they hope could lead to effective treatments for a range of serious hereditary diseases within five years.Researchers from Newcastle University, in northern England, presented their findings at a medical conference at the weekend, a university spokeswoman said on Tuesday. The IVF, or test-tube, embryos were created using DNA from one man and two women. The idea is to prevent women with faults in their mitochondrial DNA passing diseases on to their children. Around one in 5,000 children suffer from mitochondrial diseases, which can include fatal liver, heart and brain disorders, deafness, muscular problems and forms of epilepsy. If all goes well, researchers believe they may be able to start offering the technique as a treatment in three to five years.Mitochondria are tiny power packs inside cells that provide their energy. Faulty genetics can mean mitochondria do not completely burn food and oxygen, leadi...
Adult stem cells offer effective treatment for peripheric vascular disease
2008-01-25 13:08:00
Two separate studies have provided evidence that multi-potent adult progenitor stem cells extracted from bone marrow (MAPC) may offer an effective treatment for peripheric vascular disease.   Both studies—one by the University Hospital of Navarra jointly with the Centre for Applied Medical Research (CIMA), also of the University of Navarra, and the other by the Centre for Molecular and Vascular Biology atthe Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium)—prove MAPCs to be effective in the regeneration of blood vessel tissue, and also in muscle tissue when treating peripheric vascular disease.   Acute peripheric vascular disease involves the obstruction of the blood circulation in a determined area of the organism, as a consequence of the occlusion of the artery supplying blood to it, with the consequent reduction in blood flow. If it is not treated in time, the ischemia can cause various complications.   The basic effect of peripheric ischemia is an important l...

Scientists find elusive pancreatic stem cells in adult mice
2008-01-25 12:57:00
A study on adult mice has revealed that the pancreas harbours stem cells with the capacity to generate new insulin-producing beta cells.   The newfound progenitor cells will provide a potential target for therapeutic regeneration of beta cells in diabetes, provided that the results replicate in human studies also.   “One of the most interesting characteristics of these (adult) progenitor cells is that they are almost indistinguishable from embryonic progenitors,” said Harry Heimberg of the JDRF Center at Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium and the Beta Cell Biology Consortium.   “In terms of their structure and gene expression, there are no major differences. They look and behave just like embryonic beta cell progenitors," the researcher added.   Insulin is required for cells to take up blood sugar, the body’s primary energy source. In people with certain types of diabetes, pancreatic beta cells lose the ability to produce suffic...

Stem Cells Used In Attempt To Fix Hearts
2008-01-23 21:29:00
And, guess, what? Once again, the ones used are not embyonic (via Insty) British scientists have been given the go-ahead to begin potentially ground-breaking experiments using injections of stem cells to repair patients’ damaged hearts. The team hopes to repair the organs of people who have suffered the most severe heart attacks. (snip) The trial will involve patients with the worst prognosis, those who have scarring on at least half of the left ventricular wall. “It’s the worst heart attack you can have. Most patients just die,” said Ascione. The team will extract bone marrow from all 60 patients and separate out a class of stem cells that makes up 1% of the tissue. Previous studies have suggested that this cell type is able to regenerate heart muscle cells and blood vessels. By using the patient’s own cells there will be no problems with tissue rejection. Excellent news. Like Glenn, I hope it works, too. And all without killing babies. Copyright ©...
US Company Claims Cloned Humans, Made Stem Cells
2008-01-23 12:02:00
A California company said on Thursday it used cloning technology to make five human embryos, with the eventual hope of making matched stem cells for patients. Stemagen Corp. in La Jolla, California, destroyed the embryos while testing to make sure they were true clones. But the researchers, based at a fertility center, said they believed their ready source of new human eggs would make their venture a success.Other experts were skeptical about the claims, published in the journal Stem Cells. If verified, the team would be the first to prove they have cloned human beings as a source of stem cells, the master cells of the body. There are several types of stem cells. Embryonic stem cells, made from days-old embryos, are considered the most powerful because they can give rise to all the cell types in the body. The Stemagen team said they got five human embryos using skin cells from two adult men who work at the IVF center. They said they had painstakingly verified that the embryos were clo...

Researchers Create Beating Heart With New Cells
2008-01-14 06:38:00
Researchers at the University of Minnesota seeking new treatments for heart disease have grown a beating rat heart in the lab by using stem cells. VOA's Jessica Berman reports the research reported by the journal Nature Medicine is laying the groundwork for the transplant of what the scientists are calling bio-artificial organs in humans.Experts say there are an estimated 100 million people around the world whose hearts do not work well enough to pump blood through their bodies. Many heart patients in need of a transplant will die waiting for a new organ to become available. But the researchers say if human hearts can be made from animal organs, they could save lives. In their experiments, researchers removed the hearts of newborn lab rats and stripped them of their cells in a process called organ decellularization.Lead researcher Doris Taylor, who heads the University of Minnesota's Center for Cardiovascular Repair, says investigators were left with a white protein matrix shaped l...

Researchers Use Human Embryonic Stem Cells To Kill Cancer Cells
2007-12-27 15:49:00
Researchers generated “natural killer” cells from the human embryonic stem cells. As part of the immune system, natural killer cells normally are present in the blood stream and are play a role in defending the body against infection and against some cancers. “This is the first published research to show the ability to make cells from human embryonic stem cells that are able to treat and fight cancer, especially leukemias and lymphomas,” said Dan Kaufman, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of medicine in the Stem Cell Institute and Department of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and lead author of the study. “We hear a lot about the potential of stem cells to treat conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. This research suggests it is possible that we could use human embryonic stem cells as a source for immune cells that could better target and destroy cancer cells and potentially treat infections,”...
