Stereotypes
2008-05-09 16:07:00 We tend to pigeonhole people into groups based on many different characteristics because very few of us have the time or the brain power to really get to know each other individually. Some stereotypes are fair. Some are funny. Here are a few that I think are worth mentioning:-Proud to be a Texan Guy - I love him, but he's obnoxious. Main stereotype characteristics include giant cowboy hat, "don't mess with Texas" bumper sticker, unreasonable loyalty to either a longhorn or an aggie(?), and takes great pride in the fact that he can eat fire in the form of a crescent shaped pepper. He uses phrases like "padna" and "druther". Likes to kill animals. Good guy.-Depends on his athletic ability to make him money Guy - Most all professional athletes and many former college football stars are this guy. Main stereotype characteristics include multiple tattoos with names of his children on some kind of shrub, speaks in the third person about himself, thinks a strip club is a perfectly...
Blowing Away Stereotypes
2008-04-29 04:00:00 Barack Obama just cannot make his comments about "bitter" small-town Americans who "cling to" guns or religion go away. And now the Wall Street Journal's Arthur Brooks makes a fact-based case for just how wrong Obama's comments are. According to the story , gun owners are happier in general than non-gun owning Americans. They earn more money and spend less time feeling "outraged" over the actions of others. Based on the tens of thousands of gun owners I've met, I'd say...(read more)
Overcoming The Autism Stereotypes
2008-04-27 07:00:00 As with anyone with a physical or mental disorder, autistic people deal with a wide range of reactions from others, from full support to uncaring ignorance. Unfortunately, even those who support autistic family members, co-workers, and friends may not understand autism very well. This leads to stereotypes, which can result in hatred, embarrassment, or other ...

Rethinking fat stereotypes
2008-04-24 17:44:00 Fatness isn?t always caused by inactivity and a scarfing down of Twinkies. As anyone who has struggled with weight will attest, weight loss and gain aren?t always simple matters of ?choice.? Here are some other reasons besides gluttony and sloth why one may be fat.
Is Linux Really Outgrowing Its Stereotypes? Does It Matter?
2008-04-23 05:30:00 Last month distro-review ran an article titled 10 ways that Linux is outgrowing the stereotype and becoming the best OS. While I agreed with all 10 points in the article something just didn't sit right with me. I bookmarked the article and gave it a good long think. My conclusion: the facts are correct but there are problems with both the premise and the goal of the article.

2008-04-18 16:43:00 Paul Krugman in his recent New York Times editorial titled: ?Clinging to Stereotypes? (April 18, 2008), attempted to dissect Barack Obama?s now famous ?bitter? quote. Making arguments that only a conservative pundit could, Krugman went line by line utilizing the most intellectually honest arguments. Entrepreneurship stereotypes
2008-04-17 22:36:00 Or “Why all the mummies in the movies have problems walking?” I write an entrepreneurship blog for more than 3 years now. Writing the Small Business Entrepreneur blog also involves a lot of reading - I call it becoming more educate. Anyway the bottom line is that there are a lot of stereotypes when talking about entrepreneurship. And so do the mummies movies. I think in 99.99% of the movies I saw, all the mummies have a bad leg or some sort of walking disorder. I don’t know where this stereotype started from as I don’t know where all the stereotypes about entrepreneurship started. Take this one for example: most businesses will fail in the first years (first 5 as I know). Ok, so maybe yes, most of the businesses are closing down in 5 years, but does this mean they have failed? If you ask me, no. If I’m starting a company, it doesn’t mean I need to get it through the centuries. It should work as long as it serves the purposes for which it has been ...

Personal Brand Stereotypes #8: Choose Your Major Wisely
2008-04-14 13:16:00 The number one most important factor to employers selecting entry-level candidates is their major (44%). I think it’s pretty obvious why this carries the most weight. If you are a finance major applying for an entry-level position in marketing, it may be challenging to convince them that your experience and learnings can apply ...

Personal Brand Stereotypes #7: A Nice Car Means You?re Successful
2008-04-11 13:15:00 After dealing with ageism, I wanted to talk about social classes and how they are perceived by what they wear or what product brands they are attached to. James Bond drives an Aston Martin in many of his films, which includes the DB5 classic car and the Vanguish. You can’t tell me that those ...
Personal Brand Stereotypes #6: Ageism Puts Gen-Y in Danger
2008-04-10 13:15:00 I hope everyone is enjoying this personal brand stereotype series. 2008-04-09 13:16:00 As we continue with the many personal brand stereotypes that plague our culture, I hope you’re being more observant as to people who are wearing pink shirts or glasses and are more understanding of their situation. 2008-04-08 12:15:00 I’ve been running a series for the past week on personal brand stereotypes. 2008-03-19 01:15:00 So many of the problems surrounding our modern, “sex is abuse” approach, spring forward from our action of trying to box the entire issue up into a, “sex is this” and “sex is not that” kind of indoctrination. …Does someone, somewhere “own” the patent on the entire idea of sex?… …Apparently, some people have fooled themselves into ...

BrightMinds To Destroy the Stereotypes
2008-03-09 22:28:00 Well, before destroying the stereotypes, let’s find some definition to it. If we ask “About.com” then Stereotype is “fixed impressions, exaggerated or preconceived ideas about particular social groups, usually based solely on physical appearance.” Stereotypes might be divided into positive and negative, stereotypes based on race or gender…The last one, gender, is the topic of our post. Alison Quill, who is the founder of BrightMinds and a former secondary school science teacher aims to reverse the stereotypical view, and tries to make evidences that not only boys are presented in lighter view at science but girls too. The very first thing she plans is to call the UK toy manufacturers.According to the SourceWire “I am fed-up with receiving chemistry sets or electronics kits to review with no girls’ photos on the box packaging – only the standard grey-haired, bespectacled, white-coated, male, mad professor” says Alison Quill. "I have even had construction products ...

Children's Books without Toxic Stereotypes for Boys and Girls--
2008-03-08 17:29:00 In my view, there are many more "toxic" things in our world then chemicals. Sure, there are a whole host of toxic chemicals that are in our products, our air, and in our food that we need to learn more about, and protect our families from. But that is not what I am posted about today. I recently read the Packaging Girlhood: Rescuing Our Daughters from Marketers' Schemes, by Sharon Lamb and Lyn Mikel Brown. This book points out what you have to be blind to have missed-- how marketers decide what your children should be interested in, do and buy based on their gender. Just take a look at any Pottery Barn catalog or a sale flier from Toys R Us. The girls are encouraged to shop, observe, care lots about houses, food, and taking care of babies. Boys are encouraged to explore, build, construct, and play sports. The Packaging of Girlhood is a great, informative and disturbing read. It shares specific information about marketing to different age groups: toddlers, little girls, pr...

Stereotypes of 55 nationalities
2008-01-22 05:26:00 Chris of nomad4ever has an interesting post on national stereotypes. He searched the net for what people think of each other, and I must say it's an eye-opener.While we Pinoys love to demean ourselves, it seems other nationalities have a kinder view of us than most of us think. At best, we're regarded as happy and fun-loving people. At worst, we're OA (overacting), neurotic and melodramatic. Which, in my opinion, isn't really that bad compared to how other nationalities are seen.So how does the rest of the world see us and our Southeast Asian brothers? Read below. (For the complete list of stereotypes of 55 nationalities, click here.)Filipinos - “region of natural and man-made disasters” (refers to the Philippines); religious; have large, extended families; neurotic; modest; love to watch soap operas; cars are old patched American jeeps (jeepneys); tricycles are everywhere; chaotic traffic; colorful; kidnapping of foreigners is a favorite past-time - besides cock-fighting; o...

Racial Stereotypes Deeply Embedded in our Culture
2008-01-21 00:27:00 yahoo news: After a recent column describing Barack Obama as “a presidential candidate who happens to be black — not a black presidential candidate,” I received countless responses from readers, a handful of them odd. That odd handful declared they take no notice of superficial traits such as skin color, and they took me to task for making any reference to Obama’s race. “I thought of (Obama) as a person. I did not see black or white or Hispanic or that he was a man — I saw a person! If people really, truly want racial equality, then the first step has to be to STOP looking at skin color,” wrote one reader. “When I look at a person, the last thing I think about is skin color or heritage,” wrote another. Sorry, but I’m not buying it. While I am sympathetic to any desire to get past dated and useless habits of mind — especially the contentious politics of the color line — that’s just nonsense. None of us, bl...

Africa: Talking about "Tribe": Moving from Stereotypes to Analysis
2008-01-08 20:44:00 I have to say that overall the reporting of the crisis in Kenya has lacked depth and understanding. One particularly damaging word that was constantly in use was "tribal". This word has been used uncritically, perpetuating misleading stereotypes about Africans. Would we say that Europe is made up of tribes? Or that the English-French tensions within Canada is tribal conflict? Why not? It's about as sensible as assuming that Africa is made up of tribes. Well, apparently I'm not the only one irritated by this:The Kenyan election, wrote Jeffrey Gettleman for the New York Times in his December 31 dispatch from Nairobi, "seems to have tapped into an atavistic vein of tribal tension that always lay beneath the surface in Kenya but until now had not provoked widespread mayhem." Gettleman was not exceptional among those covering the post-election violence in his stress on "tribe." But his terminology was unusually explicit in revealing the assumption that such divisions are rooted in unch...

French Hygiene and Stereotypes
2007-12-17 21:38:00 French Hygiene and StereotypesHygiene in France- if there is such a thing- is somewhat different than in most parts of the planet. I am in a position where I must state that the smelly French man stereotype really did come from somewhere. It is true- French people stink.Well, so do I. But I am a traveler and have eight years of Road crust growing over me. I must say that my pharamoans are a little different than most.My friends from Chile, a place where the people wash themselves almost obsessively, seem to find a little humor in the French cleaning habits. “You can smell some of these people from five kilometers away,” she said, and continued with, “The people open their mouths to laugh and they don’t have any teeth! They just have black holes and no teeth!” My friend then continued to tell me about a time when she went to a dentist in France and told him that she wanted her teeth cleaned. With a puzzled expression on his face, the French dentist asked her why in the worl...

The Choke Factor: How Stereotypes Affect Performance
2007-12-12 11:34:00 An Interesting article below to stimulate the brain on a Wednesday morning, interested in some feed back, Guy Kawasaki does a post on the same article have a look at his analysis, to me his summary is common sense, and does not do the article real justice. I look forward to your comments. How Stereotypes Shape Performance By S. Alexander Haslam, Jessica Salvatore, and Thomas KesslerUniversity of Exeter, UKEvery sports fan has vivid memories of key occasions on which a favorite team or player has 'choked' under pressure. And every student who has ever taken a standardized test knows what that kind of pressure feels like. What makes for high-pressure situations, and how do they influence performance? In the last decade such issues have been explored by social psychologists researching the phenomenon of stereotype threat. Their work shows not only that pressure can compromise performance, but that this dynamic is more common among members of negatively stereotyped social groups. Why?T...

Either the author is a bit confused or I and 90 percent of the women I know are far from stereotypical.Do you:Require a "surprise at least once a month"?"...believe in the fairytale and [will] look at most men in the first 30 seconds as if they could be the prince [they] have been looking for..."?Expect a man to be both controversial and sensitive? Pima GOP hold cigar night to fight Republican stereotypes
2007-11-09 19:54:00 Members of the Pima County Republican Party Cigar Club met last night at a local cigar shop to talk with fellow Republicans and help fight the traditional stereotypes that surround the GOP. In the smoke-filtered front room of the cigar shop, the crowd of men held lively discussions that contained very little backslapping and only a few outbursts of uncontrolled laughter.“My friends, we need your help fighting the stereotypes that plague our party,” said Vic Williams, one of the event organizers, “Please keep your cigar chomping to a minimum and we recommend only ordering scotch that is younger than 15 years.”The group of participants that meet every 2nd Thursday of the month exchanged hushed gasps in response to the Scotch comment. However, the overall reaction of the crowd appeared to be positive. These gentlemen appear to want to help fight the stereotypes. One of the members was seen taking off his top-hat and placing his monocle in his pocket.“If you are going to make ...
Time to End Mob Stereotypes?
2007-11-07 18:10:00 FIFTY YEARS AGO this fall, in the tiny town of Apalachin, near Binghamton, N.Y., Americans were unexpected guests at the coming-out party for organized crime. American popular culture has never been the same since then. Neither has the psyche of Italian-Americans.
