On the Guitars & Equipment page you also mention that you use ?a Zoom 9050 unit for some of the more extreme effects.? Provide a few examples. The material on Live Rails doesn't feature as much zoom stuff. The DigiTech Whammy Pedal has largely superseded it. From past tracks, "Mechanical Bride" from To Watch the Storms album used the zoom extensively. You?ve made extensive use of the Fernandes Sustainer over the years. Describe the ways in which you have had to modify your playing to adapt to both the possibilities and the limitations inherent in the device. Some guitarists mute naturally by resting their hand on the bridge between phrases. You have to do this if you're using the Sustainer pick-up, especially in high harmonic mode. It can run away with you, but it's the nearest thing to playing through the whirlwind of feedback so familiar to Hendrix fans, with the benefit of achieving the same effect at low volume. The Floyd Rose appears to be your vibrato of choice. Why? I ...

Steve Hackett: guitar international interview
2010-11-10 22:09:00
Steve Hackett: Well, when I started out, I was listening to bands like The Shadows and the Ventures. Most guitar solos in those days tended to sound like the soundtracks to cowboy movies, and indeed were in many cases. So it?s really the story of how the guitar moved from the Bonanza sound that we all remember to the kind of screaming, sustaining, female-voice-emulating-screamin-g sound that we associate with all those long-haired reprobates all those years later. You had the influence of the southern states first of all and all that Duane Eddy stuff and I loved all that. One of my favorite records as a kid was Because We?re Young. That became the theme tune for a radio station in England which used to have to broadcast itself through Luxembourg. It was known as Radio Luxembourg. The signal used to come and go on that thing and be very, very weak. But nonetheless, everybody in England who was into music had their ears glued to that. I was listening to all that early stuff and every ...

Steve Hackett: blog talk radio interview
2010-09-01 02:26:00
Steve Hackett is probably best known for playing guitar in the groundbreaking progressive rock group Genesis. Joining the band in 1971 for the album Nursery Cryme, the guitarist stayed with Genesis through 1977's Wind & Wuthering before departing for a solo career. Hackett has since recorded a number of solo albums in a variety of styles, covering world music, Brazilian rhythms, classical, blues and more. In 1986 he formed the supergroup GTR with Yes guitarist Steve Howe, which lasted for one album. In more recent years Hackett has primarily focused on solo work. In 2010 Hackett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis, and he recently released an album entitled Out of the Tunnel's Mouth. Last month he performed at the High Voltage Festival in London, and he has announced an upcoming band project called Squackett which will pair him with Yes bassist Chris Squire. Steve Hackett joins us on Long Live Rock to discuss his new album, tour, the High Voltag...
