Besok 5 Tahun Invasi AS ke Irak, Apa kata Joseph Stiglitz?
2008-03-19 07:14:00 Besok, 20 Maret, genap lima tahun invasi AS ke Irak. Menurut Joseph Stiglitz pendudukan itu telah menghabiskan 3 triliun dollar AS bagi negaranya, dan 3 triliun dollar lagi biaya yang harus ditanggung dunia. Stiglitz mengungkap hal itu dalam buku terbarunya ?The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict? yang ditulis bersama koleganya ...

> “The Three Trillion Dollar War” Joseph Stiglitz
2008-03-04 12:42:00 March 4 (Bloomberg) — The title tells the story of “The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict.” Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilmes have produced a devastating argument against the American invasion of Iraq. By demonstrating that the cost of the war ...
News: The Cost of the War in Iraq: US$3 Trillion
2008-03-02 19:03:00 Before America invaded Iraq, officials in the Bush administration estimated the war might cost tens, at most hundreds, of billions of dollars. Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilmes lay out very different figures in their new book, "The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict." In it, they tally data on everything from troop pay to equipment to veteran's entitlements to larger social and economic costs, and examine how mismanagement, opaque accounting, and the privatization of the conflict have resulted in a megabill that Americans could be paying back for the next half-century.Stiglitz: "You can look at it and say, "This is a small percentage of a rich economy," or you can look at things like the proposed children's health-insurance program that was recently vetoed as too expensive?that can be measured in the cost of days of fighting in Iraq. Funding for a major autism research effort is equal to hours of fighting. Bush has said...
Financial Hypocrisy, By Joseph E. Stiglitz
2007-11-23 03:37:00 This year marks the 10th anniversary of the East Asia crisis, which began in Thailand on July 2, 1997, and spread to Indonesia in October and to South Korea in December. Eventually, it became a global financial crisis, embroiling Russia and Latin American countries, such as Brazil, and unleashing forces that played out over the ensuing years. Argentina in 2001 may be counted as among its victims. As the World Bank's chief economist and senior vice president, I was in the middle of the conflagration and the debates about its causes and the appropriate policy responses. This summer and fall I revisited many of the affected countries, including Malaysia, Laos, Thailand, and Indonesia. It is heartwarming to see their recoveries. These countries are now growing at annual rates of 5 percent, 6 percent and in some cases even higher -- not quite as fast as in the days of the East Asia miracle but far more rapidly than many thought possible in the aftermath of the crisis. Many countries chan...
Making Globalization Work. Joseph Stiglitz- Jim Miles Book Review
2007-09-07 10:19:00 by Jim Miles Having read Stiglitz' first work, "Globalization and its Discontents", having thought at the time that it was a strong work, then having read his second book "Fair Trade For All", which is not even mentioned in this current work — indicating perhaps that he is not that proud of it, as he should not be, it was terrible — and now having read his latest book "Making Globalization Work", I am now thoroughly disenchanted with his ideas and thought development. "Making Globalization Work" is much like his first book in that it is a reasonably clear read, and while there is by necessity the use of the economic and political lexicon (that's jargon for 'jargon'), it is not so obtuse (that's jargon for difficult) that it is not unreadable. It is simply not well argued, and retains the major faults that were obvious in the middle work, "Fair Trade For All". [1] From that previous work, I crit...

2007-05-23 13:45:00 Q: Who Else is on Board with the Underground Investor? May 22, 2007 - In continuation of my last blog, today it was reported that Stiglitz criticized Congress for its stance on China tariffs. “We are in a mutual hostage situation, and China may hold the better cards,” Stiglitz said. The story stated that if Congress were ... |
