Latest jargon on the global stock markets
2008-07-14 05:39:00
Heard of things like 'dark pools' 'smart routers' and 'algorithmic trading'?Dark pools, to put it simply, are essentially trading platforms and exchanges that match block institutional orders, bypassing the main exchanges completely in off-market deals, and don?t publish stock quotes. The geeky jargon in the circuit is primarily because it?s been made possible by increasingly sophisticated technology like algorithmic trading tools. They guarantee absolute anonymity and secrecy to buy-side traders worried about revealing their strategies, accesses available liquidity outside the exchanges, and is only reported to the light side post-trade. It is, of course, all intensely regulated and painstakingly legal ? dark pools have taken off in Europe only after the introduction of MiFID, which discourages internalisation of trades, and regulation NMS in the US. A consortium of major banks, including Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch, UBS, Morgan Stanley and Credit ...

Invest in Indian stock Markets the Happionaire way !
2008-04-24 08:36:00
2008 has not been too kind for stock market investors and traders. The Indian stock market has shed as much as 25% since the beginning of this year. Investors have lost money in tune of thousands of crores. I have been an investor in Indian markets since last couple of years and have seen the crash of May last year. However, the current situation seems to be far more worse as it is coupled with global downtrend in Economy. So what should investors do in such circumstances? Should they stay away from the markets or do they still have a chance of making money? I suggest you pick up a copy of "Invest the Happionaire way" book by Yogesh Chabria. I must admit that I have just skimmed through the pages, but what ever little I have read, it comes across as a fun and interesting way of creating wealth through the Indian stock markets.

Financials and FED helped stock markets.
2008-03-20 19:22:00
Stock markets have rebounded this short trading week. Fortunately Black Monday stayed only with Bear Stearns and the fear hasn't been spread all over. FED cut by 75 bp below street expectation but it has been taken as a good step. Gold and crude oil stepped down from record prices and US dollar bounced from bottom.Let's have a look to broadly expected earnings results for brokerages. Both Lehman Bros and Goldman Sachs reported this week significant profit decline, 57% down respectively 53%. Even thought they beat estimates which returns faith in financial sector. As well as Morgan Stanley on Wednesday with decline 42% (top analyst estimates). After Bear Stearn collapse there were a lot of fear about earnings this week. Nevertheless the most risky is seen result of Merrill Lynch. This company has more than 30 bln USD in risky loans. Also liquidity ratio is the lowest (52%) among financials. The best liquidity has Lehman Brothers with 74%.Related tickers: (SPY), (DIA), (QQQQ), (BSC),...

US stock markets at crossroads.
2008-03-06 22:16:00
At the end of last week we saw technical triangle for broad US indices. Pattern was crossed down and shares are going down this week. We are approaching stronger technical support line. For S&P 500 level 1300 points was topped on May 06 and tested one month ago. Dow Jones Industrial average has tested level of 12000 points already three times. After Chinese sell-off last year, one month ago and just now. NASDAQ Composite is not as interesting from technical point of view. It gave up all gains and all 2007's resistance against credit meltdown is away. Index is well behind Chinese sell-off bottom and another resistance line could be seen at psychological level 2000 points. This level has been tested 2 times in last 3 years.Related tickers: (DIA), (SPY), (QQQQ)http://stockweb.blogspot.-com/atom.xml

Stock Markets Unwinded
2008-02-04 20:58:00
Here comes an article which will let you know the basics of a stock market. So let?s straight away start the topic which I think is of interest to everyone in the country.First of all for those who think that stock markets are the easiest ways to become rich, think twice as it is one of the most troublesome places. It can make one earn a crore a day and loose two the next day. So with this constraint in mind let?s try and know our markets a bit better. Let?s start with what does bulls and bears mean. Bulls mean people who purchase stocks and bear the one who sells them. All of you must have heard of about market indices as BSE Sensex or Nifty. One see?s the value of indices jumping up and down throughout the day. What does the value mean? If we take example of BSE Sensex it is the weighted average of thirty stocks which are representative of all the sectors of the economy. Thus these indices change with the change in the underlying stock prices. The next question which must be flo...

Basics about primary and secondary stock markets
2008-02-01 15:22:00
Quite a few of you have asked me at one time or the other to define or explain about stock markets. More specifically primary and secondary markets. You can’t get a better explanation than the one that appeared in today’s article ‘Not so primary a market’ in the ET. For the impatient amongst you, the following excerpt would be just enough: For sustained economic growth, it is essential to have a stock market that mobilises and allocates capital efficiently. To place the capital market in perspective, it would be useful to distinguish between the “new issues market” and “stock exchange”. The “new issues market” allocates long-term funds to corporates in an economy without constraining the investment horizon of the investors. The “stock exchange” facilitates buyers and sellers to transact in securities issued in the “new issues market”. Hence, the economic significance of the stock market stems from its role as an allocator of resources. As a resul...

Oil slides towards $89 as falling stock markets weigh
2008-01-29 12:49:00
By Santosh Menon LONDON (Reuters) - Oil dropped more than a dollar towards $89 a barrel on Monday as falling global stock markets, amid renewed worries about the health of the global economy, spurred profit taking. Expectations that OPEC is unlikely to agree to boost supply, when ministers meet later this week, prevented deeper losses. U.S. light, sweet crude for March delivery slid $1.30 to $89.42 a barrel by 1433 GMT. Prices gained 14 cents last week after clawing back from a six-week low of $86.11 a barrel. Brent crude in London was down $1.09 at $89.79 a barrel and, as in the early part of 2007, was trading at a small premium to U.S. crude, the market benchmark. "Traders are squaring their positions before the OPEC meeting, hence there is some profit-taking," said Tetsu Emori of Japan's Astmax Futures Co Ltd. After falling sharply early last week, as growing concern over the U.S. economy rattled global equity markets, oil bounced back from Thursday as U.S. le...

Oil drops below $88 as stock markets resume fall
2008-01-24 10:22:00
By Santosh Menon LONDON (Reuters) - Oil fell below $88 a barrel on Wednesday as stock markets declined further, shrugging off a temporary reprieve from Tuesday's steep cut in U.S. interest rates amid persistent fears of a global economic slowdown. Stock markets across Europe fell, wiping out some of the previous sessions gains, while Wall Street looked set to fall amid fears worse was still to come. U.S. crude fell nearly 2 percent, $1.69, to $87.52 a barrel by 1340 GMT, after hitting a low of $86.11 in the previous session amid a global stock market rout. London Brent crude fell $1.38 to $87.07 a barrel. Some analysts said funds and speculators have been exiting open positions in oil and other commodities to cover margin calls and finance losses in equity markets. "I think a lot of people realise the underlying weakness of the economy is still unfolding... traders feel that there are lots more losses still waiting to be revealed," said Robert Nunan, manager at M...

Bloodbath in Indian Stock Markets
2008-01-22 13:49:00
Monday saw biggest fall in the history of Indian stock market. The fall was so unexpected and harsh, investors just could not digest it. In Mumbai, a huge number of ambulances were pressed into service between brokers? offices and nearby hospitals to reach persons complaining of chest pain or uneasiness. Doctors in hospitals across the city were hard-pressed to examine the increasing number of patients being brought in with chest complaints and related illnesses. The ICUs of almost all city hospitals were full. ECG machines in several hospitals reported to have failed as the volatile signals were too high to measure. According to unconfirmed reports, hospitals have placed orders for large number of new equipment to meet the massive demand. Fire fighters had a tough time in various parts of the city trying to bring down people from the terraces of high-rise buildings as they threatened to jump to their death having lost all their savings to the market crash.
