Stocks Fell Like a Rock
2008-06-27 03:34:00 Original post on The Sun's Financial Diary Stocks Fell Like a Rock The last time I inserted the Dow’s intra-day chart, the benchmark dropped some 400 points. That’s was less than three weeks. Today is another bloody day for stocks, under similar circumstance as 20 days ago: Oil surged past $140 a barrel; More writedowns are expected at financial firms ...
Banking stocks & Straits Asia
2008-06-25 09:47:00 After performing my usual 4 steps screening with XPertTrader, banking stocks and Straits Asia appeared to look interesting technically. For banking stocks, they will have a short term rally should Ben unexpectedly raise the interest rate. From the charts, DBS and OCBC looks like reversing. For Straits Asia, I see a possible chance to do counter-trend trading here. With it's well known volatility, this short-term opportunity should be worth taking a look.Golden Agri together with the rest of the agriculture stocks got hammered today. This furthers reinforced my belief that i should not be riding on trends as there is non to speak of in this current market. It is better to take profit at resistance level or support level if short. Just checked the news and saw that oil slips $4 on increase in inventory. Tsk tsk... news must have leaked out during Asia trading hours, otherwise why did these stocks lao sai in anticipations of the news? Price moves ahead of news my friends....STI t...

Every day I watch my 401(k) and Roth IRA slip a little farther into the red. My mind races with second guesses... shoulda, woulda, coulda... that kind of thing. The bottom line for a twenty something like myself is that you shouldn't be investing money that you may need right away anyway. I'm going to be a net investor for the next 20-30-40 years. As Warren Buffett would say, I don't care what is happening in the next quarter. I care about whats happening in the next twenty years. I see some of my major investments as outperformers for the long term. That's whats important, not the day to day drama on Wall Street... (Photo originally uploaded by chrisfriel.)

Energy stocks boost European markets
(AFP)
2008-06-08 22:06:00 Fri Jun 6, 6:53 AM ET LONDON (AFP) - Europe's main stock markets rallied Friday as energy companies garnered support from surging crude oil prices which boost their profits, analysts said. In late morning trade, London's FTSE 100 index of leading shares gained 0.90 percent to 6,049.50 points. Frankfurt's DAX 30 index added 0.44 percent to 6,972.38 points near the half-way stage, and the Paris CAC 40 index increased by 0.90 percent to 4,951.28. The Euro Stoxx 50 index of top eurozone shares won 0.41 percent to 3,967.88 points. The European single currency stood at 1.5602 dollars. Wall Street had jumped higher on Thursday after Verizon Wireless announced it had agreed to buy mobile operator Alltel in a blockbuster 28.1-billion-dollar deal. Japanese share prices gained more than one percent on Friday to reach the highest level in about five months...
Stocks fall sharply on surge in oil, jobs data
(AP)
2008-06-08 22:06:00 By TIM PARADIS, AP Business Writer Fri Jun 6, 6:44 PM ET NEW YORK - Wall Street tumbled Friday, taking the Dow Jones industrials down nearly 400 points, on a pair of alarming economic developments: oil prices that shot up by more than $11 a barrel and approached $140 for the first time, and the biggest gain in the government’s unemployment reading in more than 20 years. The jump in oil to a price that might have seemed unfathomable only a few months ago appeared to wipe out investors’ recent optimism over the prospects for a strengthening of the economy. Oil jumped following a Morgan Stanley analyst’s forecast of $150 oil by July 4, and in response to a drop in the dollar and fresh tensions in the Middle East. The surge in oil seemed the guarantee that gasoline prices that are on the verge of a national average of $4 a gallon will only continue to cl...
Japan stocks rise on weaker yen
(AP)
2008-06-08 22:06:00 Fri Jun 6, 4:36 AM ET TOKYO - Japanese stocks rose to a five-month high Friday as investors snatched up exporter shares on a weaker yen and oil issues on rising crude prices. The Nikkei 225 index gained 148.32 points, or 1.03 percent, to 14,489.44 — the highest close since Jan. 9. Investors welcomed the yen’s slide against the dollar, as well as Wall Street’s overnight gains. The dollar traded at 106.06 yen at late afternoon Friday, up from 105.89 yen late Thursday in New York. The euro was little changed at $1.5600. A strong yen makes Japanese goods less competitive in overseas markets, and reduces the repatriated earnings of exporting companies. Kyocera rose 2.9 percent, and Tokyo Electron gained 2 percent. Buying lost steam in the afternoon as investors grew cautious ahead of the release of U.S. jobs data, slated for later Friday, traders said. “The Nikkei is very sensitive to external factors lately,&r...
European stocks struggle after Asian markets slide
(AFP)
2008-06-08 22:06:00 Tue Jun 3, 7:43 AM ET LONDON (AFP) - European equity markets struggled on Tuesday after sharp falls in Asia and the United States overnight, as traders seized on renewed concerns about the ongoing credit crunch and high inflation. Tokyo tumbled 1.6 percent lower as concerns about the health of major US banks, following huge losses caused by the default crisis among high-risk American mortgages, returned to the fore. Wall Street had skidded lower on Monday after management shakeups at US banking giants Wachovia and Washington Mutual. In addition, ratings agency Standard & Poor's cut its credit ratings on Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley, and warned that banks could face further losses on US residential mortgage-backed investments. Added to the gloomy picture, traders were concerned about a Wall Street Journal report that Lehman Brothers will report its first...
Oil price drop continues as US stocks swell
(AFP)
2008-06-08 22:06:00 Wed Jun 4, 3:48 PM ET NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Wednesday, extending recent heavy losses on the back of a stronger dollar and as investors reacted to rising motor fuel inventories in the United States. Concern about oil prices persisted nonetheless as they still remain historically high. US Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke said the American economy was holding up in the face of a "serious oil price shock." New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for July delivery, shed 2.01 dollars to close at 122.30 dollars a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July delivery lost 2.48 dollars to 122.10 dollars. Prices tumbled after the US government's Energy Information Administration said American gasoline (petrol) reserves increased 2.9 million barrels in the week ending May 30. That beat market expectations for a gain of just 8...

How To Short Sell Penny Stocks Safely: Three Quality Short Trades
2008-06-05 02:17:00 Judging by the posts, we’re all making money lately. Good, I don’t know of any other site with such high percentage of people profiting…especially when none of us are very smart or experienced. I think it’s cuz my impatience has taught you guys to take your profits or losses quickly cuz you’re trading the most volatile stocks around. Yes, you should let your winners run, but that’s not as important as knowing you should never ever let your losers run, no matter what your meaningless little mind thinks. (If I don’t cut your egos down to size, the market will, which do you prefer?) First up, I shorted 500 NTI into the market close of its first truly down day on Monday. Volume had faded, Superman’s posts on TheLion.com stopped being responded to as often—basically the hype was dying down so my $13.70 entry point looked ideal.
