Online Video Market Evolves, Begins Morphing Into New 'Storytelling' Device
2008-10-30 22:31:00
Source: Online Media DailyA year or so after the online video advertising marketplace emerged in earnest, experts on both sides of the table say it remains a vital but messy, complicated and often difficult-to-evaluate business--although it clearly is the future of what Madison Avenue has historically considered its dominant, persuasive advertising medium: television. Those were the conclusions of speakers and panelists participating in the OMMA Video conference here on Wednesday."If you look at how many people are viewing videos online, the industry is monetizing only a small fraction of that," Adam Kasper, senior vice president-U.S. director of digital at Havas' Media Contacts unit asserted during panel of top digital media buyers. "Right now, we're kind of behind the adoption curve, and we're not taking advantage of everything that's out there."Kasper seemed to sum up the consensus among the digital agency executives, but Jason Tsai, senior vice president-group communications...

this american life- storytelling and chris ware
2008-05-25 17:16:00
This American Life, the NPR series has made a move into the world of TV with a series on Showtime. Here's a clip of a story with art by Chris Ware, which is fantastic. It's a great piece that shows how memory plays tricks with us and how two people's version of an event can be radically different. In a way, it explains the problem with real versus reported data. SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Several Ojai residents recommended that we attend one of the events at the Ojai Storytelling Festival while staying in town for a long weekend. Our Friday evening was available. This was also the Laugh Night at the festival and we could not resist seeing what it's all about. There is not too much going on in Ojai in the evenings after dinner time anyway, apart from relaxing. We bought our twenty-five dollar tickets in advance (earlier that day) and were ready to go.Rate and Review : Laughing Night at the Ojai Storytelling Festival, Ojai, California

When I first moved to LA, most of my friends were in or, as I, aspired to be in the entertainment industry. Oftentimes when we got together, we would have long discussions about movies, what makes a film great, why chemistry between actors is so crucial, how a good director can tease a ...
Storytelling with C. S. Lewis
2008-05-01 19:11:00
With Prince Caspian soon to be in the theaters, I have been reflecting somewhat on the writings and theology of CS Lewis. Have you ever wondered why he wrote The Chronicles of Narnia? I am convinced it is partly because he knew that stories often teach theology better than simply teaching theology. Look at these quotes ...
Review: Sharp Teeth, sharper storytelling
2008-04-05 21:06:00
by Chris Mackowski Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow Harper, 312 pages Toby Barlow’s new book is a novel. It’s also an epic poem. It’s a love story, a crime thriller, and a werewolf story, too, Throw out everything you think you know about any of those things. Barlow’s book, “Sharp Teeth,” is nothing less than a bold literary experiment that rewrites the rules into free-verse poetry. It’s evocative, ferocious, and frequently funny–a pop-culture fusion drink that’s jacked up on its own juices. It’s a dark, compelling nightmare that reads like a gritty dream. The story’s motley cast of characters centers around Anthony, a city dogcatcher who meets the girl of his dreams. What he doesn’t know is that she’s really a dog—literally. She’s part of an ancient, secret race of shape-shifters, but she’s trying to kick the life. Her old pack has plans of its own, though, and soon she and Anthony get swept up in them without even realizing it. There’s murder, consp...

Ode to wordless storytelling (part 2)
2008-02-19 17:05:00
I still love wordless comics, but more importantly, I love wordless stories. There’s a reason for the cliche, and the uber-talented David Wiesner proves it. While not a cartoonist, he is a premier children’s book illustrator, and his recent Caldecott winning book (his third!), Flotsam, is a wordless masterpiece. Unfortunately, I could not find scans of some of the more iconic images from it, but rest assured that the ones I’ve shown here are mere setups to the real meat of the book. Each page is carefully laid out to draw the eye along a logical path, while every detail of each scene is dutifully accounted for. Through a gradual shift of perspective, Wiesner tells the story of a camera as it takes a fantastical journey, evoking a profound feeling of wonder along the way. “Reading” the book, I became quite nostalgic for those grade school days in which each pebble, each piece of junk found on the playground was a source of delight. If you’re looking for an exampl...

adding new dimensions to storytelling
2007-12-18 05:47:00
Alexis Madrigal has written for Influx a few times and should pending favorable conditions be working in the Planning Department of a large San Francisco agency, sadly the ad world’s loss is Wired magazine’s gain. Alexis writes about science and space for the renowned tech lifestyle pub, but he is also taking the concept of journalism into the 2.0 world. If you are interested, you can follow Alexis’s research process on his Twitter account, you can see his inspiration sources from his Google reader account and join his Facebook group. It’s interesting to see that content doesn’t have to be one-dimensional, it can be seen in many forms; pre creation, during creation all in addition to the finished piece. There’s a lesson here for all media, all storytellers and planners; there’s gold in everything you do.  Posted by Ed Cotton

Storytelling
2007-08-27 05:25:00
We are hardly the most important, significant, or successful species on the planet. Even the most triumphant of human achievements is diminished in the context of life's history on Earth. Our achievements as a species are part of what makes us unique--as can be said for every other species--but these do nothing in our self-designation as the dominant form of life on the planet.Instead, we are the storytellers of the world. As humans we explore, investigate, and think, creating memories to form stories of ourselves, each other, and our world. We cannot consider ourselves superior or inferior in the community of life, but we should certainly acknowledge that thus far we are the only species endowed with this special gift of storytelling. We do not tell stories simply because we can; rather, we tell stories because it is part of who we are.

Secret Wars: the secret (or not so secret) war against good storytelling
2007-06-27 07:23:00
According to this writer on Comicon's Pulse (via Molten Thought), Secret Wars is what killed many major comic books of today with the overkill of company wide crossover "events":For a very long time I read comic books religiously, perhaps literally so since Batman and Superman had a greater impact on my moral outlook than any church did. Even when I drifted away I would still occasionally visit the comic book shop or see a cover that caught my eye at the rare newsstand that still carried comics and pick it up to visit with my old friends.I can?t do that anymore. If I pick up a mainstream Marvel or DC comic I don?t have a clue what is going on and I?m not going to get anything approaching a complete story. I?ll get one part of a six part story arc if I?m lucky; if I?m not I?ll get one part of a story spread over six different titles instead.I understand the motivation. It is to get the reader hooked. If the story ends on page 22 they don?t have to buy the next one but there is no gr...
Digital Storytelling and the 6 billion others
2007-06-26 16:00:00
TThe hybrid technical, creative, cultural and (dare I say it) theraputical process that is Digital Storytelling has become somewhat of a hip buzz-phrase in contemporary academic and social thinking circles. On a simple level it is simply a new method and approach to engaging, capturing and delivering very persoanl and engaging stories. First-person, intimate, simple, concise and focused. And whilst there are some very specific methodologies to aquiring Digital Stories the truth is that the concept is wide open to interpretation and implimentationIn my recent A Thirteen-point manifesto for educating creators of cinema and the institutions that teach themone of the key elements I discussed was the Embracing of the Personal. "If you can make an intimate, personal film examining yourself, your life, your thoughts and passions then you'll be ready to explore the qualities in others." And I believe this is central to making the digital media age one of meaningful media rather than ju...

Digital storytelling
2007-06-21 21:17:00
2007-05-08 07:19:00
These days, every brand expert is talking about the power of storytelling. There are many reasons for it, not least, the desire to inject more humanity into brands. The problem is that storytelling is like a game of poker, because a better story can always come along to trump yours. Let’s look at ice cream as an example. There used to be a time when Haagen Dazs had the premium ice cream market to itself. It made up a name and sold its “specialness”. Along came Ben and Jerry’s, the name was real and there was a good reason to believe the ice cream was special, it came from Vermont. Josh Friedland at The Food Section informs us that there’s a new player in the ice cream storytelling stakes, GROM a mini-ice cream chain (12 stores worldwide) who has just opened a store in New York. Let me tell you a story about blogging. Today I went to bed on the edge of not posting nothing today, when it came to my mind how the hole thing started - It's about a month ago I created a blog for my class as some kind of social platform, as well as a discussion forum. As a side effect I created my first blog EXISTO! and as a side effect of it this one, wich is, at the moment, my baby. Yes, that's it, my baby, requires almost the same amount of time. For me it's about far more then just drawing, I just can't content myself with an out of the box blog with slightly changed colors and fonts. And of course I want to promote it. But...the thing is, I just hadn't got a clue about almost nothing. It's changing quite fast, but still, when I have solved a problem the next one is popping up. It's virtually like in my real life. And not just that, I always want more. That's good, especially for you, beacause I said tousand days, imagine, toouusaand daayys! I must have been fucking ...

Leonard Cohen Redux - Astrology, Storytelling, Dance, Movie-making, the Dis
2007-03-04 15:06:04
Astrology in Real Life...Silverfoot left this great comment on the blog about the film, ?Ladies and Gentlemen… Mr. Leonard Cohen? : ??watched it in Documentary film class last year. and I am a big Cohen fan, but even taking my bias into account, that film is brilliant. So much of it is set up in a kind of candid camera style, like the cameraman is just recording the events as they happen, but then they let Cohen subvert that, and reveal the constructed nature of documentary film. So for me, it was the ?CAVEAT EMPTOR? bit that really grabbed me. His need to be a double agent working for the audience, to show them the film is not entirely ‘devoid of the con.’ There’s something vaguely Virgo/Neptune going on there?needing to be upfront with the ‘truth,’ but doing it stylishly.? Silverfoot, my sister is a Pisces and a dancer / choreographer. And she explained once how difficult and frustrating it was to work so hard to make something magic (a dance) ...
Writing, Reporting, Storytelling the Taboo: Jupiter Trine the 8th House
2007-02-05 20:37:02
Astrology in Real Life...Conversation from my coffee date, except this time we’d met for dinner: ?So in that story, (Little Mike) I was trying to convey something,” I said. “Um? well when you hear on the news about a story like this. A man breaks into a woman?s house and gets in her bed. You have no idea what goes on in that bed. You just assume certain things. Really, I don’t think most people think about it at all. They don’t consider it because it’s something never told. Reading about something like this in the paper, people think, oh. That happened. And the next question is, did they catch the guy or not?? He agreed. ?Right. Nothing else. What happens in the middle of that is very mysterious. The whole thing is secret. Whatever went on, or goes on during something like this.. no one reports it.? ?That?s true.? ?Yep. It?s just blotted out. And since this happened to me, I wanted to see if I could transfer my exact experience of that to the...
Jupiter As Antidote For Saturn Depression: Storytelling and Change of Persp
2007-02-05 20:37:02
Astrology In Real Life...Regarding my coffee date, that first time we met, we discussed some of the regulars in the gym. I wouldn?t call it gossip, since neither of us are the type. It was more a sharing and comparing of our impressions of people which was really enjoyable to me because he?s observant but very different from me. Like our writing. I write (true) stories and this blog. He writes lyrical poetry. He writes some other things but primarily he writes songs that record his emotions (Pisces Moon). I do the same, but in my own way. So we discussed the Neighborhood Sagittarian and I told him how I?d written about her and felt she was a very important cog in the whole system there. “We’re all connected by her as she travels from person to person sharing our stories, all over the place.” The next time we met, he told me he?d started to see things the way I do in the gym. He started to see all the stories, that is. ?Yeah, there are all kinds of stories in the...
