Yuri Anime: Strawberry Panic, Volume 5 (English)
2009-01-15 22:35:00 Strawberry Panic, Volume 5 reminds us that it is incredibly important to not write climactic moments of a series while drinking. In the sober light of day, that so-dramatic bout of selective amnesia... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit http://okazu.blogspot.com for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Yuri Manga: Strawberry Panic, Volume 2 (English)
2008-05-13 22:25:00 Have you visited translator Anastasia Moreno's fabulously wonderful blog, Manga Gunkan yet? Go. It's not often you're going to get such a unique mix of fun tidbits about translating, manga, military adventures and cute dachsund pictures - all written up in both Japanese and English, for your reading pleasure. Check it every day.And speaking of Ana's mad translation skills, today we're talking about Strawberry Panic, Volume 2, translated skillfully by mad Ana. (For a summation of both my frustration with the SP fandom and the plot, please check my review of the Japanese edition from December 2006.)Today, I'm just talking about the reproduction into English. I'll never get tired of telling you that Seven Seas does a very, very good job. Ana's translation captures the soap opera-like, over the top-ness, and the adaptation, by Lorelei Laird, allows the dialogue to speak for itself. Considering how absurdly melodramatic everything is, I think it would make a pretty great J-drama....

Strawberry Panic Review
2008-02-26 06:58:00 As you know, 2008 is not a very good year for shoujo-ai/yuri. At least for now. So I decided to rewatch one of my favorite shoujo-ai anime of all time, Strawberry Panic. How good it is? Well, you can see down there… Story I don’t know how to explain this one but this is the weakest part in this series. However it is not THAT bad. The story follows the life of Nagisa Aoi, who just transferred to Astrea Hill. While she staying there she also uncovers the mystery that surrounds Shizuma Hanazono, the only Etoile at Astrea Hill. The main story also focused on romance between Hikari Konohana and Amane Ohtori which are not the main characters. The only my problem with the story is it moves pretty slow, but being a shoujo-ai, it doesn’t need to be as ‘fast and furious’ as shounen ones. It is safe to say it is a marriage between shoujo-ai and slice of life although it is not the perfect one. Being a 26-episode series mean some of them are not going to stick to ...

Yuri Light Novel: Strawberry Panic, Volume 3 (Japanese)
2007-08-11 02:22:00 When it comes to Strawberry Panic!, Volume 3, I really don't even know where to begin. This book was so cracktastic, so chock full of utter randomness that went nowhere and did nothing that the only thing I can think of to start is this:I believe in my heart that stories that take place at all-girl's private schools for the daughters of the privileged that are not action stories, ought to include no more than 1(One) use of private helicopters. More just seems overkill. :-)You may remember that Volume 2 in the Strawberry Panic! light novel series ended with Amane and Hikari having run away from the school together and Nagisa having removed herself from both the Etoile-sen and her relationship with Shizuma.Volume 3 begins with the crowning of the winners of the most recent competition for the Etoile-sen - Spica's newly returned violin virtuoso Kusanagi Makoto and Lu Lim's girl prodigy, Byakudan Kagome (sans bear.) This couple was so utterly "huh???" I read the passage about three ...

Yuri Light Novel: Strawberry Panic, Volume 2 (Japanese)
2007-07-18 00:23:00 Extra long review today because I'm heading out for Otakon (Yuri Panel Sunday at 1pm! All ages!) later this week and will probably only post in teeny, non-review chunks for the next few days. Before I start today's review, I wanted to share this with you. It is a *real* honest-to-god email I received. I have altered it in no way, except to cut out the "Hello Erica" part:i just wnated to tell you i love youre book strawberry panic so much well i didnt read the book i watched the show and i want more episodes that series made me depressed for a weak and im still not over kaori :'[ make mroe episodes :[...Moving right along. In a surprise move, the Light Novel Strawberry Panic!, Volume 2 was actually pretty entertaining. LOL As you know, Seven Seas has licensed the LNs. I am reading the series in Japanese first, because I wanted to see what the original sounded like before I read the translation. And, because I enjoy it.Quick Overview of the Series and Story So Far (If you know all t...

Yuri Light Novel: Strawberry Panic, Volume 1 (Japanese)
2007-03-21 18:12:00 One of the many reasons I began teaching myself Japanese was because I resented having to rely on translators' interpretations. I know that in translation one is always balancing "feel" and "sense" and I wanted to be able to read things in the original in order to be able to grasp both, without someone making my decisions for me.So, since Seven Seas will be coming out with a translation of the Strawberry Panic light novels, I wanted to read them first in Japanese, so I could better appreciate how they were reproduced in English.Let me give you this piece of background info, that should help you appreciate my feelings about this novel:On average, it takes me three months to translate a 200 page Maria-sama ga Miteru light novel. If I am reading for myself, without translating, it takes me about a month to read, with the assistance of at least two dictionaries and a translation tool....It took me *4 days* to read this 300+ page novel. With one dictionary. If you can't appreciate the s...

Yuri Drama CD: Strawberry Panic Lu Lim Hen
2007-03-14 17:41:00 While I did not find the Strawberry Panic Drama CD Lu Lim Hen: Oneesama to Maid Soudou to be the same kind of aural assault that occured when I listened to the Mai Otome Drama CD, I did feel that another little piece of my soul has been sucked away by it...especially as the second time I listened to it, it bothered me less than the first. :-)As a quick flashback, let me remind you that the first Strawberry Panic Drama CD covered the great underwear mystery at St. Miator and the second CD in the series, the physical examinations at St. Spica. This, the third Drama CD based on the Strawberry Panic franchise, focuses on the doings in Lu Lim Academy, the youngest, and strangest, of the three schools that make up Astoria. The one defining characteristic of Lu Lim (other than bad French, assumably) is that the students are encouraged to not only take part in club activities, but go ahead and make as many new clubs as they want. This fact I gleaned from the Strawberry Panic light novel, whic...

Yuri Manga: Strawberry Panic, Volume 2
2006-12-06 09:02:02 Welcome to "schoolgirls" week on Okazu. Feel my excitement as I contemplate yet another half dozen manga with pretty much the exact same subject. I hope you'll forgive my lack of enthusiasm - I have a cold and a cranky attitude.Let's start with the "omg, most AWESOME 4tw, this series roxors!!!!11111" series since Kannazuki no Miko, shall we? I am of course, speaking of Strawberry Panic which, by the sheer number of emails and comments that look like the above phrase, has an even stupider less discriminating sophisticated fanbase than KnM. And yet.I read it. I enjoy it. I find it amusing. (For those of you tempted to write in that I am a moron because I cannot see how wondefulness Strawberry Panic is, please read the first three sentences of this paragraph again. Then again, until you can understand that I *do* like it. I just don't think it's as win as you do.)Let's start with the cover. You can see that the main character and her stalker roommate are depicted realistically. F...

Yuri Drama CD; Strawberry Panic, Lyric 1 "Miator Volume"
2006-11-04 09:15:02 I know that you too, daily wrestle with concerns like "whose purple underwear is this!?!" Therefore, I also know that you too, will find the story in Strawberry Panic Drama CD: Lyric 1, "Miator Ben" absolutely riveting. :-)The Drama CDs for Strawberry Panic each focus on the characters from one of the three schools. The first DCD, "Lyric 1" deals with the girls of Miator, the second will focus on Spica and the third, Lu Lim. While the story for this CD is original, i.e., not from either manga or anime, it has no actual plot. An official fanfic, if you will. If you were going to build a timeline, this would be taking place somewhere during the first half of the anime. The story opens with Nagisa and Shizuma in the greenhouse. Shizuma embraces Nagisa from behind, and, as rain begins to pour down, attempts to kiss Nagisa. When Miyuki interrupts, Nagisa breaks free and runs into the rain. In the meantime, back in their room, Tamao is fretting while Chiyo-chan functions like a real maid...
