Saving strays.....
2008-04-21 08:05:00
Hi all,I hope you had a good weekend. Mine was very rewarding. I am unable to blog in the day now as I have been told I have a month to prove that I earn my salary....... *sigh* otherwise it seems I will be retrenched. So.... I am staying off the blogs and the internet, looking frantically for another job and consulting with a labour attorney (Thanks DT!) I will leave you with a story that has made my rescues seem like a little drop in the ocean compared to what this woman is doing!Catwoman's Olympic challenge: to save last stray from bulldozers  She has caught 186 of London's wildest cats ? in buses, behind a Chinese supermarket and across 800 acres of industrial wasteland that is to be levelled and reshaped into the 2012 Olympic Park. Now, with only days remaining before she must pack up her traps and make way for the builders, Celia Hammond ? Sixties model turned stray cat-catcher extraordinaire ? may have finally met her match. "Time is running out," she said, screechin...

DVD Review: Strays
2008-01-08 16:25:00
Listen to Zach and Bill’s podcast review of Strays at Movie Bonfire At first glance, it’s easy to dismiss this film as some kind of vanity project by an egotistical action star, but after learning that this film is Vin Diesel’s feature film debut, that it premiered at Sundance in 1997, and that coupled with a short film Diesel directed in 1994 (Multi-Facial) Stephen Spielberg’s attention was grabbed enough to cast Vin in Saving Private Ryan, Strays is cast in an entirely new light. Described as a “multi-cultural Saturday Night Fever“, Strays centers around Rick (Vin Diesel) and his close-knit group of friends as they navigate the perks and perils of the roaming night life and a directionless existence. Beginning with Rick recounting through voiceover how one of his mother’s many boyfriends gave him a copy of the kid’s book Ferdinand the Bull with the inscription “Life’s a Matador,” Strays becomes a forceful character...
Strays Love Me
2007-12-12 14:47:00
I have a quality about me that is magnetic to strays. I have a house full of them. In fact, I'm at critical mass in the taking in stray animals department. But the strays don't know that. The- stray du jour is Akasha. She's taken up residence on my porch and has clearly been somebody's indoor cat, as I have to fight with her to -keep her from running into my h-ouse, despite 3 other cats and -2 large dogs waiting at the doo-r for her. She's also quite vocal about her opinions and wants and isa charmer.I just don't have the where with all to take on a 6th animal at this point. If anyone can help this little girl out, please let me know.

No More Kitties
2007-11-15 11:49:00
Unfortunately the last little kitty died too. He died at the vet. (30 Oct 2007) We had taken him there at 3am this morning because he refused his food and was vomiting. He was the last of 3 kittens we had rescued from the freezing cold outside last week. It's been a terribly sad and draining week. You pour your heart and time and love out for these little creatures who depend totally on you for survival and then their little tiny bodies just cannot fight the cold or the illness that attacks them. We tried so hard. The vet kept him all day - in the morning he had shown signs of improvement, he was on a drip (IV?) and had antibiotics and they were keeping him warm, but it seems between the cold he had suffered when his mommy abandoned them, the infection in the eyes they all had, the upset tummy and losing his siblings and mommy maybe it was just too much for a little one like that. He was happy yesterday... he purred almost all day. He spent most of the day cuddled in my hand again...
Good News!
2007-11-15 11:47:00
This little one, now named Sharky, is showing signs of improvement! This weekend after his little sibling died moments before entering the Vet, he became all bloated and wouldn't do his toilet business. I was getting worried because it seemed like he was swelling up and I didn't want to overfeed him, but he wanted food! (he bites when he's hungry!) So we returned to the Vet on Sunday (they are open 24hours a day, fantastic!) and they helped him to let it out. Relief! He stopped crying so much and calmed down, he relesed a lot during the night too and today was very very weak it was worrying. He refused food and was looking like we might lose him too, he was really skinny. I was so sad. I prayed for him. Later, around 4pm he suddenly started squealing again and walking around, almost his usual behavior, a good sign. The whole day he had just slept... and purred, but wouldn't eat and could not hold himself up on his feet he was so weak. After the squealing and walking around the p...
Grief, Another Kitten Died
2007-11-15 11:36:00
Unfortunately also this little kitty didn't make it. He died today around lunch time. My mom woke me around 11am telling me to call the vet - i ran upstairs and called him, he was out and gave us the number of a clinic to call. We called and explained that he was not responding and breathing was not regular and that our own cat, Kyoko has a sneeze... they told us to bring all our cats in asap. So we jumped in the car with 3 cats, Kyoko plus the last 2 kittens and rushed to the clinic. Unfortunately this little kitty died just before we could get the Vet to see him. Tragic. You know it is such a feeling of uselessness and hopelessness and grief when you have put in so many hours to do your best and take care of this tiny creature and in the end you find that your efforts were either wrong or in either case useless. One vet had told us to feed them every 4 hours, this one told us every 2 hours! The poor kittens were starving but because we didn't know and they didn't squeal we ...
She Didn't Make It
2007-11-15 11:31:00
Unfortunately this little kitten did not make it. She died at 4pm today. I was so sad and cried a lot. Had tried so hard to keep her warm and comfortable. Her little legs were no longer strong enough to hold her and she kept toppling over so needed constant care to keep her upright and reposition her legs since she had very little control over them. This photo was taken shortly after lunch when she drank a little milk, but only a little. She died 3 hours later. We think it was a lung problem since she often gasped and yelled throwing her head back.. that's what caused the toppling over. My sister had wanted to keep this little kitten, she was her favorite. She seemed to be the strongest and biggest just a week ago. The mommy cat had taken her out of the box twice in the last week and now we know why. We learned online that cats often remove a kitty if it is ill for fear that the others might get sick too. And that we should not put it back with the others. We did and that was our ...
A Kitty Story
2007-11-15 11:28:00
This is a sad story about how I saved one kitten and in the process doomed his siblings... I might have already blogged about how a stray cat had given birth to 2 litters of kittens in our yard this year. I had recently found one of the little kittens from the last litter in a tunnel under some cement slabs out in the cold, crying. The mommy was right there in the garden but didn't seem to mind the little one's squeals so I thought maybe she doesnt know how to save it, maybe she's a bad mommy, maybe she put him there... all sorts of thoughts were running through my head but the most important thing was that this little one was sad and alone and cold and his little siblings were calling for him too! all 3 in a bundle So I removed a cement slab and reached in the tunnel to get him and return him to the box with the other 2. They were all happier after the reunion. ^_^ phew! Tonight, about a week later, we return home late in the dark and hear the little one squealing again so we go...
We Found Kittens!
2007-11-15 10:35:00
We have a stray cat in our yard as some of you already know. She had kittens earlier this year (5, but 2 found another home, 3 remained with mommy in our yard) and recently she had 3 more baby ones and has moved them into our laundry room. She found a soft, warm spot in an old wash basin in which we had left our house cat's old blankie in a box. (Yeah, it is a bit messy in there still, we're working on it, still have to paint and tile and fix the windows and door - it's an outside building for those who don't know) So I went to do my washing and found that mommy was not with her babies so I finally got a chance to go up close and touch them! Aren't they just adorable??? The one looking at the camera is a grey tiger. He was awake and his little siblings were sleeping on top of him! As I approached he hissed at me, probably been taught already by mommy that big 2 legged critters are evil. So i ignored him and stroked his head lightly and he kept quiet. So sweet! His little sibl...

Briton roughed up trying to protect Kerala strays
2007-06-16 05:44:00
After Karnataka, stray dogs in Kerala are the focus of some unwanted attention. The state administration is on a stray dog killing spree in Thiruvananthapuram, and a British woman who had taken upon the responsibility of protecting them, was roughed up and jailed for her efforts. "Had something like this happened to an Indian in my country it would have been called racial discrimination," said 65-year old Avis Lyons, who sold off all her property in England and settled down in Thiruvananthapuram six years ago. Her mission was to take care of stray dogs and other animals. She started the NGO Animal Rescue, Kerala, which has sterilised more than 2,500 dogs since 2001. In 2004, the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation tied up with her NGO and 50 dogs in the city were sterilised under the arrangement. But then the partnership ended. More than 2,200 dogs have been killed in Thiruvananthapuram alone since November last year. In February this year, when members of the NGO stopped...
South Chilean penguin strays to Peru
2007-05-12 15:35:00
A Magellanic penguin has stunned scientists by showing up in Peru, some 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) from home in southern Chile. The penguin "got off course," said Miguel Lleellish, of the National Institute of Natural Resources told AFP.The penguin appeared to have been acting alone and not as part of a migration, he said.A native of the chilly Strait of Magellan region of southern Argentina and southern Chile, the flightless bird somehow swam all the way to Paracas National Reserve, just 14 degrees south of the Equator. The temperature of the Magellanic penguin's normal habitat is about eight degrees C (46 degrees F) while Peru's temperature is a warmer 14 degrees C (57 degrees F), biologist David Orosco told AFP.He said the lone bird was not a harbinger of mass migrations due to global warming; the penguin would not be seeking warmer climate, in that case. The bird, so far unnamed, has taken up residence in the reserve, but Orosco fears that the undue attention could be worse ...
