"Talent is only the starting point." -Irving Berlin, American Composer and Lyricist, Irving Berlin books and CDs//We all have natural and innate abilities to do some things better than others. Our genetics determine, to a certain degree, our predispositions and inclinations. We are endowed with gifts from birth that make us uniquely competent in ways that others are not. Chrysler and Nissan play to strengths, swap cars and trucks
2008-04-15 02:08:00
Late this afternoon Chrysler and Nissan announced a major product cooperation deal that would allow both automakers to focus on their current product strengths while expanding their lineups with new entries. Beginning in 2010 Nissan will start making a new small car for Chrysler while a year later, Chrysler will start building a new full-size pickup truck for Nissan. The small car will be built to a Chrysler design and will be sold in North America, Europe, and other markets. The truck will be built for Nissan at Chrysler's Saltillo Mexico assembly plant starting 2011 and will presumably replace the current Titan pickup. Nissan has been looking for a diesel engine supplier for some time for the Titan and this deal will likely allow them to use the new Cummins light duty diesel that is debuting next year. It's not known at this time if Nissan will get a heavy duty pickup out this deal. Another unknown is whether Nissan will get a truck equipped with the two-mode hybrid system that ...

2008 Mets Strengths and Weaknesses
2008-02-07 19:23:00
I was recently asked to give my take on the Mets strengths and weaknesses as we head into spring training in a few weeks. While I could probably go on about this topic for pages on end, I've tried to compile my list in a concise manner which I'll share with you below:Strengths (a) Starting Pitching - The Mets are the only MLB team with three 15 game winners in Perez, Maine & Santana. Plus having Pedro Martinez for a full year makes it possible to have four 15 game winners in one season which would be a remarkable feat.(b) Speed - arguably the fastest lineup in the NL with Endy, Reyes, Beltran, & Wright leading the way. Bunts, steals, and hit & run are all options available from anyone in the lineup.(c) Infield defense - at pretty much every position we have a solid defender. If Delgado can keep picking balls out of the dirt and Reyes & Wright can keep his errant throws to a minimum the infield could have fewer than 20 errors this year.Weaknesses(a) Bullpen questio...

Building on Strengths

It can be challenging in some cases, but when we think creatively, we can help individuals with autism identify and build on their areas of strength. In some cases, a “problem area” or “challenging behavior” can be turned into a positive trait or a job opportunity. The key is to focus on what a person can do rather than on what they cannot do. 5 Strengths / 4 People
2007-10-22 23:48:00
Mel over at Monday Morning Power has tagged me with the 5 Strengths/4 People meme. For Mel I'll do just about anything so here goes. Here?s how it?s done:?So, here?s the challenge: make a list of five strengths that you possess as a writer/artist. It?s not really bragging, it?s an honest assessment (forced upon you by this darn meme). Please resist the urge to enumerate your weaknesses, or even mention them in contrast to each strong point you list. Tag four other writers or artists whom you?d like to see share their strengths.?1. Sense of humor has to be my greatest strength. If you can't laugh at yourself and all the other silly things that happen in this thing called life, then you are doomed to being too serious. Look around! There is some funny stuff going on all the time.2. Love of life comes in second. We have such a short time (even if we live until 100). Stop and smell the roses along the way. It's the journey that's the most important, not the destination. Again, look a...

Analyzing Your Business's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats
2007-10-08 10:13:00
Another tool for the toolbox, it is amazing how we overlook many things in our business which are actual strengths.Analyzing Your Business's Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threatsby BNET staffSWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) is a method of assessing a business, its resources, and its environment. Doing an analysis of this type is a good way to better understand a business and its markets, and can also show potential investors that all options open to, or affecting a business at a given time have been thought about thoroughly. The essence of the SWOT analysis is to discover what you do well; how you could improve; whether you are making the most of the opportunities around you; and whether there are any changes in your market?such as technological developments, mergers of businesses, or unreliability of suppliers?that may require corresponding changes in your business. This action list will introduce you to the ideas behind the SWOT analysi...

Playing to our Strengths!
2007-10-06 22:43:00
Today was our annual GACC golf tournament and I had a great time. Several holes into the tournament I realized that my long game was not going to be my strength, so I began to concentrate on my short game. Then I started to have fun because I began to play to my strengths today,  which was my short irons and my putting. Then I started to remember the leadership summit back in August that I attended with thirty other leaders from our church. My favorite speaker was Marcus Buckingham and he spoke about his #5 New York best selling book, “GO put your strengths to work”. I purchased his audiobook for my iPod and have listened to it several times. Marcus has done a lot of research that definitely shows that many people do not make full use of their strengths at work. I believe this book shows you how to seize control of your strengths in your life and use them to your advantage. I have began to understand what my strengths really are. Don’t get me wrong I actually ...
Are You Using Your Strengths?
2007-09-28 06:28:00
One of the best books I’ve read about business is Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham and Donald O. Clifton. In the book, they argue that is the secret to having a fulfilling and successful work life is to know your strengths and use them as much as possible. I remember a passage from the book where they talk about Warren Buffett, a famous investor and billionaire. Here is the exact passage found on page 15: “I am really no different from any of you.” Warren Buffett, with his usual down-home style and slightly disheveled appearance, is talking to a roomful of students at the University of Nebraska. Since he is one of the richest men in the world and since most of the students can barely cover their phone bill, they start to chuckle. “I may have more money than you do, but money doesn’t make the difference. Sure, I can buy the most luxurious handmade suit, but I put it on and it just looks cheap. I would rather have a cheeseburger from Da...

Physical Alchemy: Turning Weaknesses into Strengths
2007-09-01 18:31:00
Everyone has something they don't like about their body. Some people wish they had different hair. Others wish they had different color eyes. Some people aren't happy with their skin tone or quality and many people aren't happy with their height. I was one of those people.Growing up in Japan, I didn't like the fact that I was short - even for a Japanese girl. When I was in a middle school, I eagerly joined the basketball club because I thought perhaps it might help me to grow taller (since almost everybody plays basketball is tall). I know it seems silly now, but trust me, for a 12 year-old, this was sound logic! I wanted to do anything I could to make myself taller. It turns out, I didn't have much luck growing taller, but then several years later, my future husband, Jeff, introduced me to the martial art of Aikido - an art that would dramatically effect my self-image and self-esteem for the better. In retrospect, I find it kind of ironic that it was my American, Caucasian husb...

The CopyGhost's Strengths **Part Three**
2007-07-27 07:00:00
Yes, it's been a week. Leave me alone. I was busy. And that's how it always starts isn't it? I'm not going to take it easy on myself here. Not posting for six days is completely unacceptable at this point. Completely. So, let's move on with The CopyGhost's Strengths, Part Three. We've already discussed my writing and marketing abilities, both of which are vital for the success of a freelance copywriting and ghostwriting firm. My third (and final) major strength is my intense entrepreneurial drive and desire.I have wanted to own and operate my own business for as long as I can remember. The desire to have even a limited control over my own destiny is compelling, and the opportunity to actually earn what I'm worth boggles my mind. However, I have not always had the drive I have now. Let me explain the difference:As I said, I've always wanted to do this, but I never really have. Once I spent a summer mowing lawns and whacking weeds, and called myself a "landscaper". Once I ...

The CopyGhost's Strengths **Part Two**
2007-07-22 03:28:00
Yesterday I discussed my writing ability. The second of four major strengths I bring to this business is my marketing ability. What I mean by that is my ability to look at a product or service from the customer's standpoint and pull out the vital benefits that must be understood to make the sale. From the ghostwriting standpoint, this same marketing mentality helps me focus on the facets of the client's personality that will most effectively "sell" whatever subject or point of view I've been asked to write about. It helps a speech reach the audience's heart. It helps an article boost the "author's" reputation while informing the reader. And, it helps me speak to my clients on a level they all understand: monetary. In other words, my ability to see the marketing value of what I write gives me a leg up on a good portion of the writers they may have dealt with in the past, (even copywriters) because I can translate ideas into dollars when discussing their problems. I can help th...
The CopyGhost's Strengths **Part One**
2007-07-21 03:10:00
A little study into my personal strengths, and by extension, the strengths of CopyGhost as a company. (Don't worry, the weaknesses will be detailed in an upcoming post!)To begin with, we'll take a look at my writing ability. It forms the entire base of my desire to be a freelance writer, and I must be relatively confident in it, or I wouldn't be putting myself through all of this, would I? :)But, it's important to understand some of my views of my own abilities. From as far back as Elementary School, I have been pleasently surprised by peoples' reaction to my writing. I have often found people are far more impressed with what I write than I am. (Not that I am over-confident at this point, or willing to hand in a first draft. I've never really come to terms with this aspect of my writing history, I'm just reporting it as a fact.)This has boosted my confidence over the years to the point that I have undertaken a number of diverse writing projects: magazine articles, poems,...

Point Out People’s Strengths
2007-06-09 12:36:00
Leaders, pay your attention to this topic if you want to build strong empires! Have you been telling others what’s wrong with them? You are on the wrong way, I tell you. You never win with people. They just simply avoid you. Instead, you should help people to realize their strengths, to maximize their strengths and to be able to use their strengths in daily working life. By doing that, you and your organization will win. Here’s why. Pointing out strengths underlines people’s uniqueness: One research shows that every person is better than ten thousand other peoples at least at one thing. That thing may be in your job skills, your knowledge, your personalities, etc. Help people to discover that and you will make them feel unique. Oh, don’t forget to find yours, too. People are motivated in their areas of strengths: When you work in your areas of strengths (like composing music, accounting, consulting, etc.), you don’t need much external motivati...
