Antibodies to strep throat bacteria linked to obsessive compulsive disorder
2009-08-11 15:11:00
A new study by researchers at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health?s Center for Infection and Immunity indicates that pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome and/or tic disorder may develop from an inappropriate immune response to the bacteria causing common throat infections. The mouse model findings, published online by Nature Publishing Group in this week?s Molecular Psychiatry, support the view that this condition is a distinct disorder, and represent a key advance in tracing the path leading from an ordinary infection in childhood to the surfacing of a psychiatric syndrome. The research provides new insights into identifying children at risk for autoimmune brain disorders and suggests potential avenues for treatment. OCD and tic disorders affect a significant portion of the population. More than 25% of adults and over 3% of children manifest some features of these disorders. Until now, scientists have been unable to convincingly documen...
Strep throat amputation

Embedded video from CNN VideoSaw this video report (above) from CNN this morning. At first look, I'm thinking, "Well, this is good, right?" This will cause people to come in and be evaluated for their sore throats. Because at the end of the report, they say, "So, this winter, if you have a sore throat, get a strep test."But, as my conspiracy theory mind starts to think, could this report further worsen the antibiotic resistance problem in this country? What do I mean by that? Well, by seeing this report, will this cause patients to further push docs to give them that antibiotic for that viral infection? Of course, there is the 48 hour strep culture. But, still. Just to think about the unintended consequences of a report like this is interesting. Now, I have to get back to work. Johnny has a sore throat in exam room two.

Yesterday morning I woke up and my throat felt very tight but not really sore and I was really tired. As the day went on I started to feel worse and worse. By the night my throat was so sore I couldn't swallow or eat and I was running a temp of 101.6. I helped my children get bathed and ready for bed and asked them to read to each other. Thank goodness they are older now and I can let them do this. They were so good for me!!! Later I got up off the couch just to check on them and my youngest had fallen asleep with her light on and my oldest was having a hard time getting to sleep so I let her read for a little bit. This morning I got up and felt like I had been run over by a bus but life goes on in the Chiappini house. We got ready and went to the skating rink for skating lessons. I made arrangements for one of my bf's to watch my girls while I went to the doctor's. Well good thing I went...I have Strep Throat???!!! Isn't that what kids get??? Needless to say I am not cooking or ...

Strep Throat
2007-02-06 12:27:00
A sore, scratchy throat is often the first sign that you're getting sick, and it's a common reason people see their doctors. Most sore throats, such as those that accompany a cold or the flu, are caused by viral infections and usually go away on their own within a few days.Only a small portion of sore throats are the result of strep throat. But it's important to identify this bacterial throat infection for a number of reasons. Unlike other causes of sore throat, strep throat is treatable. The bacteria that cause strep throat respond quickly to antibiotics, and treatment stops the infection from spreading to other people. If not treated, strep throat infections can sometimes cause complications such as rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever can cause painful and inflamed joints and a rash, and can even result in damage to heart valves. Another potential complication of strep throat infections is kidney inflammation.Strep throat is most common in children between the ages of 5 and 15, but...
