Heat Stroke
2008-06-08 14:25:00
Hey there kids! Hope your weekend is going well. One of the headlines this weekend is this early heat wave, at least in the eastern United States. I have golf outing this afternoon. (Keep an eye on my Twitter to see how I'm doing today) And, around here, the high temperature will be in the mid 90s - with the humidity raising the temp even more.Usually with the heat articles, you usually see health articles about dehydration and heat stroke. But, surprisingly, I did not see that this weekend. So, I will take on the task of reviewing this stuff. (Plus, I wanted to review this myself, because I know there will be a bunch of guys out there in my golf outing today who will not hydrate enough)Here is a great article from WebMD which initially describes Heat Stroke:Heat stroke is a form of hyperthermia (abnormally elevated body temperature) with accompanying physical and neurological symptoms. Unlike heat cramps and heat exhaustion, two less-severe forms of hyperthermia, heat stroke is a ...

Jill Bolte Taylor: My stroke of insight
2008-05-29 06:14:00
This story is truly astonishing. Jill Bolte Taylor is a Neuroanatomist who had an remarkable experience of self-discovery. In this experience, she found Nirvana, that place of total peacefulness we all seek. At the same time, she discovered it's neuroanatomy. She effectively defined mindfulness. TED | Talks Jill Bolte Taylor got a research opportunity few brain scientists would wish for. One morning, a blood vessel in Jill Bolte Taylor's brain exploded. As a brain scientist, she realized she had a ringside seat to her own stroke. She watched as her brain functions shut down one by one: motion, speech, memory, self-awareness ... Amazed to find herself alive, Taylor spent eight years recovering her ability to think, walk and talk. She has become a spokesperson for stroke recovery and for the possibility of coming back from brain injury stronger than before. In her case, although the stroke damaged the left side of her brain, her recovery unleashed a torrent of creative energy fr...

What is a stroke?
2008-05-16 00:09:00
What is a stroke?    ACCORDING to Dr Alvin Hong, consultant neurosurgeon at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre and Gleneagles Medical Centre, there are two types of stroke. ‘One is caused by blockage in a blood vessel, so that blood cannot flow to the part of the brain that the vessel supplies. The other is when a blood vessel within the brain bursts, causing blood to leak inside the brain. Mrs Lee suffered this type of stroke.” What causes it? Most haemorrhagic strokes are spontaneous, meaning there are no underlying causes, such as tumours or blood abnormalities. It often happens in older people due to degenerative changes in blood vessels. In people in their 40s to 60s, the most common cause is high blood pressure. Effects of stroke Effects can vary. If the bleeding is in the brain stem, the damage can be serious. If the stroke is in the left side of the brain, the person could be paralysed on the right of the body and also have problems communicating with others as spe...

Why Is It Said To Be Therapeutic To Stroke A Cat?

Protective Antioxidants In Every Bite
2008-04-22 00:29:00
Cheryl Forberg, author of Positively Ageless and nutritionist for the NBC reality series The Biggest Loser, recommends that we eat our antioxidants.  In this FirstLook at Positively Ageless, Ms. Forberg focuses on the value of foods high in vitamins, specifically C and E, both of which offer protection from free radicals.  Instead of downing vitamin pills, aim to add various types of fruits and vegetables to the diet.  These natural foods offer both tremendous varieties of antioxidants and phytochemicals which operate successfully together within the body.   Ms. Forberg writes that scientists have "barely scratched the surface of knowing what these food components do individually, let alone in teams."Strongly flavored vegetables like garlic, ginger and onions, when fused together in a dish (think curry) provide antioxidants, antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.  Individually, each extends relief from in...
Identifying Stroke
2008-04-19 11:19:00
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours of the occurrence. That is hard as not anyone can recognize the signs of a stroke. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking the person suspected of having a stroke to do three simple tasks. S * Ask the individual to SMILE. The person should be able to smile. Ask the person to stick out his tongue. If the tongue is crooked or favors a side, that is not good. T * Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE coherently (i.e. It is sunny today). If this cannot be done or speech is garbled, then something is wrong. R * Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. Th...

Stroke Folk
2008-04-14 02:14:00
I spent some time last week at the hospital, on the stroke rehabilitation ward. Upon arrival we were greeted by various members of the team, later we would be introduced to a man who’d recently suffered a cerebellar stroke. This is where the medicine learnt in a lecture theatre translates into something completely different. No longer is it as clear cut as ‘a cerebrovascular occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery resulting in localised ischemia.’ It is instead, a man who has difficulties walking, standing, co-ordinating his hand. I watch for a moment as he tries to place a red counter into a connect-four grid. The occupational health therapist tells me how he presented, and how his rehabilitation has gone so far. I observe the man, as he cunningly dupes a nurse into losing, a move that I myself had not foreseen. If anything, it provides a poignant demonstration of his full mental faculties despite the damage caused by a stroke.Later in the day we go on to visit a...

Coping With the Aftermath of a Stroke
2008-03-12 01:36:00
I was thirty two years old when I had my stroke. I banged on the screen door window to catch the dog?s attention; the glass shattered and severed two tendons in my arm and a bunch of nerves in my hand. The surgery was extremely successful in repairing that damage, but after I got home from the hospital I began to feel strange. Not myself. We checked with the pharmacist and learned that I was having a bad reaction to codeine, prescribed for the after surgery pain. When I couldn?t tie my shoes and didn?t know the names of things, including myself and my daughters, I was worried, but thought it was just an aftermath of the whole affair. Anesthetics and I have a track record of not getting along. By the time we realized that something much worse had occurred, it was too late to do anything about it. The doctor said that I?d had a slow bleed that had repaired itself and now I just had to recover. Click to read more ...
