2007-10-19 15:58:00 Back on the chain gang with Stuart Weitzman's black patent 'Chainto' pumps Of all of the embellishments that can be added to shoes, chains would have to be my least favourite, bringing to mind tacky ankle-straps and dangling gold accessories. Not these ones, though. Stuart Weitzman has actually managed to keep his "chain shoes" tasteful, by putting the chain on the sole rather than using it as a strap, and I think it's worked out quite well. It certainly makes these 'Chainto' pumps a little different from all the other black patent shoes that are available at the moment, and the metallic heel compliments the sole perfectly. They're $299 at Nordstrom.

Colour aside, Weitzman has also jazzed up what would have been a standard court shoe with two flashes of metal: one on the toe, which looks as a cute as a ... well, as a button... and another on the heel, which has me scratching my head a little as I try to imagine why you'd actually need metal on that part of your shoe. Need it or not, it certain looks good, although I think I'd probably go for boring black, and leave the yellow for the emergency services. These are $280 at Zappos.

In my experience, this rarely trumps the original and that pretty much sums up my feelings on Stuart Weitzman's Patent Cutout Booties. He appears to have taken the classic brogue/oxford boot and given it a bit of sass and originality by firstly making it patent and then making odd cutouts. I'm afraid it really falls down in the style stakes for me. Mixing genres like this basically Victorian inspired shoe with modern twists is a tricky business. I think Stuart should go back to the drawing board.
