You Can’t Make This Stuff Up
2009-09-16 20:06:00
I could talk about how my school district wants to bus my kid out to another district ’cause they can’t handle him. Too frustrating, raw, and in flux. Could talk about Poe’s continued unemployment. But really? Haven’t you heard that one before? Could talk about certain theories about 2012, Israel peace treaties, 7 horses, and survival… But you’d think I was a true nutcase. Could tell you about how my father drunkdialed me last night. Instead, I’ll tell you this. I’m 34 years old and I’m going to be adopted. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I’m going to be legitimate. Back when I was 4, and Jeannette abandoned me, my parents couldn’t adopt me because of a combo of Jeannette saying no, and my mother’s health. All this time, I’ve been legally their great-niece. They (and I) treat me as, and consider me as their daughter. All the good and bad that entails. My children are their grandkids. They are, &ldquo...

Why the Hate Stuff?

Canon has announced the release of the new Canon G11. I've been using a G9 for a couple of years now and love it, but the housing's getting a bit beat up and occasionally the buttons stick and lock up the camera at depth... so the obvious cheap solution is to shop for a new/used housing... but man, I'm really wanting to get into an Olympus or Panasonic micro four thirds camera and housing some time in the next year as the line develops and the new models come out (but we're talking some $$ though, and I've got more than enough other things I need to spend it on for a while already). Now Canon announces the new G11... a few less megapixels than the G9, but an improved sensor and processor for less noise and improved low light performance... hmmm, might be more affordable sooner in my case... hmmm....Summer vacations seem to be ending, we're still going out nearly every day but the numbers on the boat are down. We're actually in the prime season for diving Kona for the next ...

Lately I've lying around reading the paper a lot while snuggling the baby, and here are some frugal tips I've noticed in the Trib and online: Cook Once, Eat Twice in the Chicago Tribune: Cooking large batches to feed the freezer is one of the prime frugal directives, but somehow I never thought of buying two fresh chickens and roasting them both at once. Yuri Doujinshi, Lesbian Comics and Other Neat Stuff
2009-06-15 20:12:00
Well, the first two event-filled weekends of my event-filled June are over and I thought I'd take a moment to review some stuff I have sitting here that doesn't fit into neat categories and, incidentally, ramble on a bit about related things.Let's start with the concept of Doujinshi. As you can see, we defined this in the Okazu Glossary as: Small-press or self-published works. Doujinshi are sometimes parodies of existing anime, manga, novels, games and even popular celebrities, but are also often original works. In Japan, there is a well-accepted undermarket of these works which often violate copyright as it is understood in the west. Here in the west, we also have doujinshi, which we often refer to as "Indie comics" or sometimes "Comix." Indie, short for Independent, which is shorthand for saying "Marvel and DC aren't hiring." lol Kidding, kidding. Comix are often meant to be alternative, underground or otherwise not for kiddies. The best Indie comics are incredible. Good or bad,...

Stuff you can do with Twitter: A WATBlog Super List
2009-06-08 10:44:00
Twitter is becoming one of the most important platforms to share information quickly and easily over the web. Using the Twitter API, developers have found a lot of innovative ways to keep the users hooked on to the service by packing hundreds of  services. Sometimes, less is more. Here, just 140 characters are more than enough I’d say! So I thought of compiling a super huge list of things you can do with Twitter, that you had no idea about as a newbie. Of course, the possibilities are huge, and I might have left out something, do add on in such a case. Desktop Applications Tweetdeck This is the most used desktop client out there and brings all the features of Twitter on the web and more right on your desktop. Operated by Adobe AIR, it lets you tweet, manage friends, view profiles, search for keywords/hashtags and it even shows you the trending topics, shortens your URLs for you (via bit.ly) lets you favourite tweets etc. It even has a really nifty button via Twitpic to upload yo...

If I may turn the McCarthyite phrase "jackal pack" the other way towards them, I think it fits for the ravening, inhuman hyenas that these life forms truly are.And by the way, I'm sure it goes without saying here that, inasmuch as Fix Noise deals in facts (not much, I know), they're wrong on the matter of Tiller performing third-trimester abortions for any woman seeking one. Collage: the Stuff of PoMo

Administrator's Note: One of my Corcoran College undergraduates wrote the following essay on collage as ?the reproduction and recontextualization of signs.? The student has requested me to list the author's name as ?Yon Zois.?I asked Zois for permission to post the paper here because of its fascinating theories on visual art expressed as ?message? and a novel (if somewhat brutally cynical) depiction of the malevolent inclination of that message. The assaultive aspects of representation are too often critically neglected and Zois suggests interesting possibilities for further investigation of the ?dominant discourse? of media communication. For within the verbal structure of semiotics lies an implicit coercion that Zois reveals to be a profound interpretive mode for considering visual art as postmodern address._______________________-_______________________________-____?[Collage is] an organization of already organized elements.? - Damien Hirst Quoting others? words in one?s own wri...

"Worst Persons" (well lookee lookee here, boys and girls, we have the Inky making the list for giving a monthly feature to Torture Yoo - by the way, and don't tell anybody, but I just went to the paper's Opinion page online, and Yoo still doesn't have a pic with a legend telling readers that he's a contributing columnist...I can't think of a word to describe how sad it is to see Harold Jackson, and especially Bill Marimow, who once won a Pulitzer for God's sake, toeing the Tierney line like this; Eric Bolling of the Fix Business Channel - heh - first criticizes K.O. and the like for "frat house humor" when justifiably lampooning the "teabaggers," but he then ranks his guests as if they're on a baseball team and says that Barney Frank should be the "catcher"...the laughs never stop with these cretins because they never begin in the first place; but Greta Van Susteren of Fix Noise takes it for criticizing The Politico for an ambush interview of Todd Palin...aside from the hypoc...

I think K.O. did something really special here in his methodical destruction of more stupid talking points by Bill Orally, this time about a certain Winston Spencer Churchill fellow (the wingers apparently feel a sense of kinship to the legendary Brit, and as usual, they're wrong on the facts yet again)...Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy...and oh yeah, it's another rockin' Monday (song ends about 30 seconds early, though).

K.O. talks with Jonathan Landay of McClatchy over this whole non-story of what House Speaker Nancy Pelosi knew, or didn't know, about Bushco torture based on a September 2002 briefing (Pelosi told Rachel Maddow that she wasn't told that waterboarding was going on, but apparently it was being considered, and there was a supposed legal rationale for it from Bybee, Yoo, Addington and the other "usual suspects" of our formerly ruling cabal...I think Landay does a good job here zeroing in on what really matters)...Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy..and yes, "Still Bushed" is still with us (more on the sham of Dubya's "Office Of Faith-Based Initiatives"...the only "bone" tossed to the Dubya "values voter" dead-enders out there was that idiotic conscience rule, supposedly allowing medical providers not to provide abortion counseling, and even THAT didn't happen until he was just about out of office...kudos to Keith for saying straight up about ho...
