Fear of subpoenas ‘crippling’ the White House?
2007-12-25 17:58:00
Reposting an article from Carpetbagger Report and it NOT being meant as a sneer at the left is something new for me. But I think it illustrates a couple of good points I would like to comment on. The author is putting the entire blame for the current deluge of subpoenas on the Republicans and their impeachment efforts aimed at Bill Clinton during the ‘90’s. Yes, the Republican led Congress did go to some serious extremes in their persecution of Bill Clinton. Was that persecution completely warranted? Well, that is not the focus of today's rant. I will say that the Democrats losing majority control of both House for the first time in over 40 years was part of the reason. They had a sense of invulnerability from two generations of control. And yes, that would be pretty much the same charges being leveled by the Democrats at the Bush administration today. Therefore, my conclusion would be that both sides have their own excesses to deal with. Both sides have skeletons in their close...

Fannie and Freddie regulator upset Cuomo filed subpoenas without consulting

Waxman Subpoenas Rice
2007-04-25 20:41:00
We had some advance warning that this might happen, and indeed it did;"We have hit a brick wall with the Secretary of State," said Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA). "She will not propose a date to testify, she will not agree to testify, and she insists that our Committee be satisfied with partial information that was previously submitted to other committees."Expect the Right to go nuts, accusing Democrats of a "witch hunt" and suggesting that the Secretary of State has better things to do than to testify before a congressional committee. The nice touch by Chairman Waxman;"Under the rules of this Committee, the Chairman has the power to issue subpoenas without debate or votes in the Committee. That is what Dan Burton used to do. In fact, that is what he did over 1,000 times," he said. "But I am taking a different approach today. I believe the entire Committee should have a chance to participate in the subpoenas we will consider today."This way there can be no complaints about unilateral dec...

Bush vows to fight subpoenas...
2007-03-21 13:50:00
"We will not go along with a partisan fishing expedition aimed at honorable public servants" Well with the except of whether or not you may consider Bush's administration to be "honorable"... there really isn't much to argue here. Fortunately for Bush and the White House the facts are pretty much straight forward. He has every right to fire U.S. Attorneys for any reason he sees fit, and congress has no constitutional authority to question it. This is one of two different things... both equally plausible in my mind. 1) This is another "power grab" by the Congress. The reality is that our legislators have been working for the past 40 years or so to weaken the Executive branch of the government. While out constitution provides for an equal separation of powers so that the power is spread out over many areas, every so often the Congress will attempt to overstep those boundaries and in many cases even successfully pushing the limits of their "oversight". This is one of those cases w...
