T-Mobile flubs sweet marketing effort on subway service
2009-11-18 01:32:00
On my way home tonight, I was handed a small bag of M&Ms by a nice young lady outside the Grand/State subway station. The bag said:Now arriving on the "L" Service available on thered and blue linesThe treat's on usThat's it. Seems rather cryptic. Except, since I'm the CTA Tattler, I know right away T-Mobile was trying to hype the new availability of phone and data service in the subway tunnels. Except it didn't say "subway" or "tunnel" anywhere on the little bag. Now, that's just bad marketing. So I've taken the liberty of editing the copy for T-Mobile. And hey T-Mobile, you don't even have to give me credit....
Watch Melanie Fiona perform in last episode of 'Subway Series'; &
2009-11-10 07:25:00
Just hadda show our girl Melanie Fiona some love; after all, today her debut album, The Bridge, is now available in stores everywhere! I've commented before on how well-executed and how just, flat out awesome Melanie Fiona's 'Subway Series' has been. Well, this is sadly the third and final installment as Melanie Fiona travels around a couple London landmarks and performs "Ay Yo" with a horn ensemble and one of my favorites of the series - "Walk On By" with a harmonica player. You can really feel the energy in the latter performance, further evidence to the talent of not only Ms. Fiona but also in the talented street or local performers you may encounter. In bonus Melanie Fiona coverage,...
T-Mobile service finally debuts in subway; winning ideas in Trib's CTA
2009-11-02 01:19:00
T-Mobile customers got service last Friday in the subways after waiting a couple of months since the August announcement by the CTA of a deal by the cellular carrier. The CTA will earn $3.1 AT&T customers with their iPhones have been waiting since June for service. I haven't heard that AT&T service is now available in the tunnels. If you're an AT&T customer, let me know if it is.Big ideas in Trib's CTA contest. Tribune Business columnist Melissa Harris gathered some creative, hilarious and even practical ideas on how the CTA can make more money. Check them out here. Frequent Tattler commenter James Reyes got a shoutout for his idea to outfit buses with snow plow and salt spreaders and...
Raphael Fraser: tribute to Subway Bandit
2009-10-25 02:41:00
I think I've been watching too much Subway Bandit ... but noo - that's not possible. I decided to have a crack at the solo from Cum On Feel the Noize. I've always had trouble with the cool pentatonic runs, so was playing it over and over ... I realised I had my eyes shut, and thought I might as well turn the bandana into a blindfold ;-) ... Just as well it's mostly in one position :-p but I was... This is a content summary only. Visit Truth In Shredding to find out more!
?Surface subway? vs Porr
2009-09-21 05:13:00
Do we really need Porr and more highways if we have a bus rapid transit system like in Bogota? I like the idea of encouraging people to cycle to the nearest bus rapid system main stations. Look how they store the bicycles – a lot less space consumed than car-parks. Thanks to nkkhoo for the link.
Bus rapid transit vs subway
2009-09-20 17:41:00
A bus rapid transit system can carry as many passengers as a subway system, as the city of Curitiba in Brazil has shown. I like this quote in the above video clip: “The problem is not the people who use the buses but the people who use the cars.” Surely our urban planners can learn something from ...

Scene from the Season Three premiere episode of AMC's Mad Men:Peggy and Joan are waiting for the elevator, when Peggy looks down at Joan's engagement ring and remarks:"Do you worry about wearing that on the subway?""I don't ride the subways," Joan says smugly."I'm worried about being followed, though."Awesome episode. Construction update: New subway entrances for Grand Red Line
2009-07-02 02:59:00
As the Grand Red Line construction project enters Stage 2, riders will enter and exit at one new corner, as another is shuttered. But for the busy July 3-5 holiday weekend, three of the four entrances will serve the madding crowd. However, don't get too used to three of the four entrances being open for the first time in a year. On Monday, July 6, the northwest entrance closes, and we're back to using the old northeast entrance. But the new southeast entrance will be put into service. As I reported earlier, in Stage 2, two new staircases to the north- and southbound platforms will open. The current southbound stair and escalator from mezzanine to platform will be temporarily closed. Both will...

Subway sandwiches - Arizona Charlies casino
2009-02-28 11:55:00
The most expensive Subway sandwiches we ever had. We had a voucher at Arizona Charlie's for a $20 food credit. We were thinking to go to the cafe, but there was a long line so we decided to get Subway sandwiches. We got two footlong subs, and the total was $20 plus a couple cents. The taste wasn't as good as regular Subway stores. With all the talk about the recession and the bailout and the fact that our economy has essentially regressed to the stone age, one might wonder: How easy is it to get a credit card these days? The answer: very easy, if you know where to look. No, not in the wallet of the guy next to you on the subway. I mean, yeah, that's easy, but getting credit that way puts you on the same moral footing as the bankers that got us into this mess. The better, and more ethical way, is to go to CardHub.com, like I did just now. All you have to do is check a few boxes -- are you a consumer? How's your credit? What are you looking for-- and voila (that's French for voila), you get a selection of credit cards that meet your criteria, and you can apply for them right through the site -- just click the APPLY NOW box and you're on your way to great credit, no Senate filibuster, no need to get Mr. Obama to do some speechifying -- just listing after listing of credit cards waiting for you to select...

Jessica Alba Rides The Subway With Her Baby
2008-09-13 00:40:00
I swear to the gossip gods, in the two years I've been blogging, I've never read some girl-next-door behavior shiz like this!Jessica Alba RODE THE SUBWAY from Union Square to Brooklyn with her baby daughter, Honor Marie. Her bodyguard was there to protect her, but it's still odd and ballsy that she didn't get a limo complete with a police escort to transport her.Jess was reportedly in town looking for a new apartment in Brooklyn. I don't think it's safe for her to try to act all common folk like that, especially with her young daughter, but it's still very impressive. :)

New York subway romance
2008-07-29 16:18:00
internet advertisingCANBERRA (Reuters) - A modern-day love story of a man spotting the girl of his dreams across a New York subway train and tracking her down over the Internet has failed to have a fairytale ending with the relationship over. For Web designer Patrick Moberg, then 21, from Brooklyn, it was love at first sight when he spotted a woman on a Manhattan train last November. But he lost her in the crowd so he set up a website with a sketch to find her ? www.nygirlofmydreams.com.Unbeli-evably in a city of 8 million people, it only took Moberg 48 hours to track down the woman, with his phone ringing non-stop and email box overflowing as usually cynical New Yorkers took sympathy on the subway Romeo and joined his hunt. The mysterious brunette was named as Camille Hayton, from Melbourne, Australia, who was working as an intern at the magazine BlackBook and also lived in Brooklyn. One of her friends spotted the sketched picture on the Web site and recognized her.But after finding e...

Beijing Subway 101
2008-07-24 09:47:00
Leave it to CNReviews to come out with a clearly written post on how to get around Beijing using Beijing's subway. The post is entitled, "Beijing Subway Guide: of Tickets and Faregates," and it does an excellent job setting out the dos and don'ts. If I might add one "do" of my own: do use the subway system as it is oftentimes the fastest way to get around: I truly cannot think of another city where I have consistently had to wait so long for a taxi as Beijing.
Subway Continues to Expand
2008-07-23 00:23:00
Advertising Age reports that while Starbucks is closing stores and McDonald’s is focusing its expansion efforts abroad, Subway, by far the largest fast-food chain, with 22,000 U.S. locations, is adding 800 this year. Don Fertman, director-development for the sandwich shops, said there’s now about one Subway for every 13,800 people in the U.S., although some ...
Homeschoolers Invited to Write for Subway
2008-07-11 04:01:00
Y ou may recall about six weeks ago the buzz among homeschoolers was the lack of acceptance by Subway to allow homeschoolers to particiate with writing contest.  I wrote briefly on it here and yesterday I received a comment that Subway has revised this: I wanted to let everyone know that Subway has revamped their Every Sandwich Tells a Story contest, reintroducing it as a Summer Special, running through August 31. They even took out a banner ad with Homeschooling Today magazine. For all those who clamored about Subway excluding homeschoolers, now’s the time to show them that we will indeed participate when they include us. The registration form I saw asks for the Child’s School Name, so homeschoolers should make sure they enter something like Smith Family Homeschool, rather than Smith Academy. Blessings, Jim Bob I also visited the site, and found that it is geared for children ages P-K through 6th grade for those within the USA.    You can read all the details of the cont...

Nagoya Tram and Subway Museum
2008-06-16 04:13:00
I visited the Nagoya Tram and Subway Museum earlier in the week. Its near Akaike subway station on the Tsuramai Line.Theres a wall map at the station. The museum is basically a block behind the station.Turn right as you leave Exit 2.Walk straight down the hill.At the end of the street turn right and head towards the traffic lights and Route 153.At the intersection cross the road and turn right. You should be heading up the hill on Route 153.Theres a big sign indicating the museum over the traffic lanes. There are four old tram and subway cars on display in the Museum. In the middle of the display hall there are a number of computer and interactive displays which proved popular with the noisy throngs of kids present.Another drawcard was the large model railway based loosely on Nagoya. There were model buildings of JR Central Towers and Nagoya TV Tower around which model shinkansen trains circled endlessly. With their noses and fingers pressed firmly against the display glass an employee wa...

Subway & Schoolastic Blocks Out Homeschoolers
2008-05-30 06:01:00
(I wrote this post earlier in the week, saving it to post today. I received several e-mails today regarding the apology Subway has given to HSLDA. You can read it here.) I f you homeschool, you probably have read numerous times about the writing contest Subway & Schoolastic are having.  This is the disclaimer that removes homeschoolers: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. Contest is open only to legal residents of the United States who are currently over the age of 18 and have children who attend elementary, private or parochial schools that serve grades PreK-6. No home schools will be accepted. (emphasis added)  I may not be as irrate as some blogs and e-mails that I have received regarding it.  It certainly is a bummer that homeschoolers are specifically excluded.  However, it may be a lack of knowledge on their side.  The “grand prize” is $5,000 value of sports equipment.  Subway and Schoolastic may not realize what a large community homeschooling is...
