He was just 50 years old, and less than 20 years removed from his playing career. A lot has come out in the days since Duerson's passing. Most have reminisced about his distinguished playing career, his rise to being a trustee with the University, and scattered anecdotes about his personal warmth. However, as is the case when a man ends his own life, the darker portions of his life are being explored in attempt to get a sense of what his personal demons might have been. For most of that, and frankly, for most of the positive stories on Duerson as well, I have to plead ignorance. It really exists outside what I want to discuss anyway.

Reviewing medical records for more than 27,000 suicide victims, Danish researchers found that just over one percent had ever been hospitalized for severe nasal allergies or eczema. That compared with 0.8 percent among nearly 468,000 adults studied for comparison. When the researchers weighed other factors?like people?s incomes and history of mental health disorders?those treated for severe allergies had a one-third higher risk of suicide than people with no history of allergies.

On August 5, 2004, Marilee Graham became a patient of the hospital and on August 6, 2004, she committed suicide, the complaint states. The complaint asserts that Northwestern Memorial Hospital "carelessly and negligently left [Marilee] alone in a room with the means and opportunity to commit suicide."
