Chicago Still in the Hunt for the 2016 Summer Olympics
2008-06-04 19:38:00 The BBC, The Wall Street Journal, and the Offical website for the Olympic Movement have released stories that Chicago is on the list of the final four cities to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. The other cities on the list are Tokyo, Madrid, and Rio de Janeiro. Each city now has 16 months to present their case. The International Olympic Committee will make a decision in Copenhagen on October 2, 2009.According to the BBC, "The strongest contender in terms of infrastructure, support and money is Chicago, 20 years after the last US summer Games in Atlanta, 1996 . . . The Americans will however have to improve the technical aspect of their bid after an IOC evaluation report ranked Tokyo and Madrid much higher than Chicago, with Rio in fourth place."This would be a great opportunity for all of the Midwest--and the state of Wisconsin. We should do all that we can to help Chicago secure the games.

Beijing Summer Olympics 100 Days away - The TVs you wish you could watch it
2008-04-29 14:22:00 All the top television manufacturers in Japan are busy promotion or putting the finishing touches on brand new models for television in time for the 2008 summer Olympic games and there are a few things they all have in common; they are all supper flat, super light, displayed at trade shows alongside beautiful Asian women, cost a small fortune and only available in Japan. The two main contenders in the slim and sexy line of TVs are the Wooo UT series from Hitachi (Panasonic) and the Aqous X series from Sharp both of which are 3.5 centimeters thick or less. Other industry players like Sony, Matsushita, Toshiba and Mitsubishi Electric are busy working on improving their screens, whether it be colour display improvements, power conservation, or afterimage effects reduction. I wonder how long before these televisions make it to the west and how much will they cost? I am looking to treat myself hopefully later this year with a big plasma screen, I doubt it will be one of these cutting...

China, Musharraf, Summer Olympics and Tibet
2008-04-15 11:17:00 I believe now that Musharraf has failed in the basic foreign policy test set forth by the Western democracies in recognizing Israel as a state, he is bound to try and charm China. Indeed in his first assassination of Ms Bhutto when the western press was challenging him eyeball to eyeball, he thundered at the ...
Is Taiwan next for China?s thuggery?
2008-04-06 16:19:00 Communist China has tried mightily to put on a friendly face for the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Let the 2008 Summer Olympics Begin with Protests
2008-03-24 16:37:00 Photo at right: Chinese riot police marching in Tibet's Shangri-la · 99 Tibetan protesters slaughtered (that is, unarmed protesters) by the Chinese government, who has only recently raised its official death toll for the protests to 22 · Pro-Tibet activists arrested in Greece in the flame-lighting ceremony there, where they face criminal prosecution · Chinese government announced U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, who met with the Dalai Lama recently, is "habitually bad tempered," and proceeded to try to discredit her · The Chinese government's propaganda newspaper, The People?s Daily (think Fox News for China) accused, "The Dalai clique is scheming to take the Beijing Olympics hostage to force the Chinese government to make concessions to Tibet independence." If the last accusation is true, then more power to Tibet. Sure, I?d hate a boycott of the Summer Olympics, but to help free the Tibetan people from their five decades of Chinese tyranny? I say, bring it on. Ex...

Prague For The 2016 Summer Olympics Games
2007-09-06 12:23:00 Just days before the September 13 deadline for submission of entries. The Prague of Czech Republic has joined a strong line-up of Cities bidding to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Prague Mayor Pavel Bem and Czech Olympic Committee chairman Milan Jirasek both finalized the city's intent to host & also unveiled the logo for The Prague bid for the 2016 Olympics. The logo consists of green numbers in the year 2016 shaped like a laurel branch as a symbol of victory. If successful, it will be the first time The Prague's first time to host the Summer Olympics after their unsuccessful bid in 1924 which Paris won.Though Prague has entered the Olympics hosting race, Officials say The Prague's bid has a very slim chance given that London will be hosting the 2012 Summer Olympics & it would be highly unlikely that the IOC will have 2 European cities will host the Olympic Games consecutively. Instead, they are hoping it will strengthen their bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.OlympicsSpo...

Chicago 2016 Summer Olympics Status Update
2007-05-16 15:30:00 Well, do we get it or don't we? Easy 'feller...Chicago will learn if it's a finalist when the International Olympics Committee (IOC)reveals the list next summer. The IOC actually began the bid process well-ahead of schedule, a full two months earlier than expected. A timeline was shared with the public which details the laborious bid process. The finalist will be declared October 2, 2009.It is expected that Madrid, Tokyo, and Rio de Janeiro will submit official bids. Adding to the list are the prospects of Rome, Prague, St. Petersburg, Doha, Qatar, and Baku also formally applying.Again, this is no easy process...there's a long road ahead of us.The interested cities must then submit an application file, based on an IOCquestionnaire, and a $150,000 application fee by Jan. 14, 2008. The IOCexecutive board will review those files for approximately six months todetermine which cities should be finalists, a designation that implies the cityis capable of hosting the Olympics. That beg... |
