A Whole New Twist on ?Summer School?
2008-03-20 16:31:00
While some high school students wile away their summer hours by the pool or beach, others are jumping in to the college game early by attending a “precollege program.” These programs–like summer camps with a collegiate twist–give students ages 15-16 the opportunity to try college life on for size. Ranging from about 2 to 6 ...
Machen says no cuts to summer school...
2008-01-19 18:07:00
Funny how Machen tossed around the idea of cutting Summer classes but two weeks later it's off the table."The reality is, we can't do without summer school for lots of reasons, one of which is just the economics of it," he said during the meeting Thursday. "The amount of money that we would lose far exceeds the $16 million that we wouldhave to cut out of our budget."Well duh, you mean you didn't realize that before you made the remarks that got so many people riled up?Geez. In the meantime, UF may have to take out a state loan to help cover the shortfall. I'm wondering how the budget shortfall will affect the quality of education. I won't lie and say I'm not concerned about my own education, I am very concerned. I'm concerned about the quality of instruction as well as class sizes. I don't want all of my courses taught by graduate teaching assistants, I want the benefit of actual professors. It's not that TA's don't have anything to offer, they do, but I would prefer that ...

Summer School Camp Grasic
2007-08-18 03:48:00
Wow, it's finally Friday. I'm so glad to be going home on Sunday. It has been a long week. I have for sure learned alot though. On Sunday we got to our cabins and ate dinner. Then after dinner, and then just met each other. Then on Monday, we started the school day. At seven, I awoke with the other bugler and we played to wake everyone up. Then at ate we ate breakfast. Then at eight thirty, I went to new student orientation. It was a class where we talked about blindness and, it was just a big group discussion. Then I went to private mobility lessons. The teacher was really nice. I just learned how to walk around campus. Then I went to Norwegean. It was pretty cool. We learned the alphabet and numbers and other cool things. Then we went to lunch at twelve. Then at two, I went to crochet. Then I went to fish philosophy. It was a class where we learned about having a good outlook on life and about being blind and confident. Then we were free until dinner at six. Usually I practiced f...

Story by Patrick Hite accnationpatrick@comcast.net  The neon sign of a fast-food restaurant is visible over the left-field fence. A pair of cement silos, one in center and the other in right, stare down from just over the outfield fence. The community high school is just across the street on the third-base side of the field. The baseball field even ...

(c) OnFrozenBlog - http://www.onfrozenblog.com/ - How exactly does an NHLer spend his summer preparing for the rigors of the NHL’s 82 games-plus season? We know vaguely that many of them retain the services of personal trainers, that they skate a fair bit with other NHLers in informal gatherings at rinks across North America, and ...
Summer School on Trusted Infrastructure
2007-08-07 06:00:00
One of many examples of the broader research opportunity RSA now has as part of EMC (as I described in my podcast on my new role) is this month's 1st Asia-Pacific Summer School on Trusted Infrastructure Technologies, which will be held in Guangdong, China. Dr. Wenbo Mao, who recently joined EMC to lead our new research center in Beijing, and his team have put together an excellent international program. Just as significant is the emphasis they've placed on providing sponsorships so that top students can attend...

Summer school
2007-06-19 19:43:00
Joseph had his first day of summer school today. He has stressed about this for the past two months. He was sure that he would hate it and that it would ruin his whole summer. When I went to pick him up today the first words out of his mouth were "I love summer school! I wish it was longer!"I knew he would like it once it started. Like so many things with Joseph though, just getting him to try something is the hard part. He gets so worried about things that are new and unknow that by the time the new thing happens he's managed to work himself into a little anxiety attack. We have yet to find a good way to deal with this other than just forcing him into things and then not tell him "I told you so!" when it turns out that we were right and he likes them after all. My boy is a riddle wrapped in an enigma wrapped in a pair of shin guards. (10 points for anyone what knows what I'm refering to there.)Speaking of shin guards, soccer is going well. (Like how I did that?) Joseph is ...

Summer School?
2007-06-08 03:27:00
I recently received the information regarding the work I have to do for the journal over the summer. I get the distinct privilege of reading and grading a bunch of student writing pieces. Very exciting, indeed.I have about three weeks to complete the task and send them back. I'm not really looking forward to doing it. This will certainly keep me busy this weekend and perhaps the next couple. Although the idea has popped into my mind, I currently have no intention to try to do any of this work while physically at The Firm.I guess it could be worse. I mean, I remember having to write that paper last year in addition to starting my first position as a summer associate. That first week really sucked while I was trying to do both. I just can't believe that the 1L's are all finished writing their papers so soon. Apparently time flies when you're having fun. Oh well, I guess I had better get to work on grading them.

Summer School in Natal - weaving the fabric of the New World
2007-01-01 16:07:01
I've just come back from our Summer school in Natal. Although there were two schools held in South Africa this year I chose to go to the one in Natal as I've been going there for a number of years and I like the atmosphere and surroundings of the place. It was so good to get together with people I've not seen for a long while and meet and make friends with some new faces. There were about 110 people there, mostly from the local areas but some did come down from as far away as Johannesburg, Cape Town and Polokwane. We even had visitors from Botswana, Zimbabwe and, wait for it, Japan!!This year the Summer school was dedicated to the memory of Hope Nomvete a local believer who had passed on this year, a real hero of the Faith.Classes for children, junior youth, youth and adults kept the spirt high all through the five days we were there and there was lots of participation in various arts sessions. One weaving project brought all 100+ participants together. Reflecting on the theme of w...
