Cubs win From the Daily Herald: It felt good to a Cubs team that won last year's Central title after digging a huge hole for itself early in the season before furiously rallying to win the division on the final Friday of the season, only to go three-and-out to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the division series. This year, the Cubs got out in front early and stayed there. The clinching victory was No. 93 against 60 losses. "You know what I like about this year's team?" asked manager Lou Piniella after enduring numerous champagne showers. "We played ahead all year. You've got to learn to play ahead. It's not easy. And the second thing is our September schedule was a playoff schedule. You're not going to find a rougher schedule than we've been through this September. That's a tough finishing schedule. "It wasn't easy. That's why I've been preaching caution all along." ... "We're enjoying it," said Lilly, who reached 16 victories for the first time in his career. "We're celebr...

Wrigley North Play Ball! From the Daily Herald: Look for right-hander Carlos Zambrano, who hasn't pitched since taking himself out of a game Sept. 2 because of shoulder pain, to start for the Cubs tonight. Jason Marquis is the likely starter for Monday. The Astros will be the home team for both games, and the Brewers say tickets will range from $25 to $60. They urge fans to go online at brewers.com and use the "print at home" option to avoid long lines. The Brewers said seating will be in the field and loge levels only. The Astros had been hopeful of getting one or two games in this weekend or today and Monday at Minute Maid Park, and they seemed adamant in their opposition to playing at Miller Park, which is about 90 miles from Chicago. But no other options emerged. The Cubs did not want to travel through bad weather to get to Houston. Other options mentioned since last week were St. Louis, Atlanta and Tampa Bay. That's more like it Cubs snap into shape A day too late. From the Daily Herald: Cubs manager Lou Piniella issued a warning before Saturday night's 14-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. "These last 20 games or 21 games, I'm going to try to play a lineup that can win a ballgame that day," he said. "That's all I'm going to do. I've played everybody all year. Everybody's gotten opportunities all year. "And now we're going to try to play a lineup that can win a baseball game that particular night. These guys want to stay in the lineup, swing the bats." It seems the Cubs got the message. One guy who really got it was left fielder Alfonso Soriano, who hit solo homers in the third and fifth innings and followed it with a 3-run blast in the sixth. It was the third time Soriano went deep three times in a game, and it helped the Cubs (86-56) snap a six-game losing streak. The 14 runs matched their amount for the entire six-game skid. More on Lou's new-look lineup Why didn't he try ...

You know, good looks will only get you so far. . . I guess I'm up with the headlines this morning, so these are going to be quick. The Cubs don't want us to panic: It was a very rare scene in the Cubs' clubhouse Saturday: Quiet. Usually the stereo is blaring and players are jabbering at each other. But here it was eerily subdued, because the Cubs (gasp) lost a home game. It doesn't happen very often, just 17 times in the last 67 games at Wrigley Field, but this time the Phillies prevailed 5-2 as the Cubs had no comeback to counter them. "It's going to happen," losing pitcher Ted Lilly said. "We play a lot of games and there are a lot of good teams out there." Aramis Ramirez didn't seem overly concerned. "You can't win every single game," he said. "We'll come back [Sunday] and try to win a series." Technically, you COULD win every game, but I guess you guys choose not to. Hrumph. Lou warns us not to get too excited. .. Others might be giddy over the Cubs' success, but no...

Atta boy Dempster, Ramirez shine What's new? From the Daily Herald: Thanks to a pair of 3-run homers from red-hot Aramis Ramirez, Dempster's job was made quite a bit easier Saturday. "What a game Rammy had, man," Dempster said. And what a solid season season Dempster has had, already picking up win No. 15 with over a month to go. "It's great; it's a nice feeling to have, but at the same time there's a long way to go and I've got a lot of starts left," he said. Thinking about reaching 20 down the road? "No. We'll worry about winning tomorrow's game," Dempster said. "I think that's been a good approach for us so far." Z's day at the dentist delayed For some reason I just thought of "Me and my llama, goin' to the dentist today" From the Trib: But Zambrano was the first to admit Saturday that the story of his cracked molar during Thursday's game may have been embellished. Cubs lose, now officially worst team in MLB From the Daily Herald: Leaving eight runners stranded over the final four innings, the Cubs fell 2-1 and saw their road winning streak end at nine. "Too many chances - early and late," said Cubs manager Lou Piniella, whose team fell to 75-48. "Never got a hit when we needed." Piniella looked to have the best intentions in mind when he stacked his lineup with four left-handed hitters in the middle against Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez, who had yielded a .473 batting average against lefties. Turns out that Mike Fontenot was the only left-handed batter to get 1 of the 3 hits against Sanchez in the 5 innings he worked. Piniella rested first baseman Derrek Lee and had Jim Edmonds batting third. "We rested some people," Piniella said. "And I've got some people hurt. We can't play everybody here in this hot weather in August, especially in places like Atlanta, where you play a doubleheader and then here. "You better rotate your team. We don'...

Yeah, I know, me too Cubs, um, don't win Z gets hit, hard, and Wellemeyer ends up with the win Schumaker and Albert Pujols homered in the third to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead. Zambrano hit an opposite-field homer off Wellemeyer, his third of the year, to pull the Cubs within a run. But Aramis Ramirez grounded into a double play to end the inning with two men on. Then Zambrano gave up a two-run shot to Glaus in the fourth. snip Piniella had Sean Marshall warming up in the fourth but opted to leave Zambrano in. That decision backfired when Zambrano started the fifth with a walk to Pujols, and back-to-back singles to Ryan Ludwick and Felipe Lopez that made it 6-2. Glaus then smoked a 1-1 pitch into the right-field bleachers for a three-run homer to make Zambrano and the Cubs toast. Everyone REALLY wants to win tonight gotta save the series at all costs The Cubs haven't lost a series at Wrigley Field since June, when the Baltimore Orioles took two of three in an interleague meeting. Good picture, bad caption Too much winning is bad for Lou's memory And I find myself liking Dempster more and more after each of his starts. From the Trib: Lou Piniella had what's often referred to as a "senior moment" after his Cubs knocked off the Rockies 5-4 on Saturday for their sixth straight win on the homestand. "I don't even know how we scored our runs," Piniella said. "I don't remember. ... But that's old age." Winning has become so commonplace at Wrigley Field these days that even Piniella is having trouble remembering all the details, aside from Alfonso Soriano's two-run home run off Glendon Rusch that put the Cubs ahead for keeps in a three-run second inning. But after someone filled him in on the play-by-play, it all came back quickly. "Anyway, we got five and they got four," Piniella said with a laugh. "That's all that matters." The Cubs are a major-league best 35-21, have the top-ranked offense and second-ranked pitching staff in the National League, and toppe...

Big Z snaps From the Daily Herald: Big Z, as he had said he would in spring training, had kept his emotions in check for the most part this season. So much so that manager Lou Piniella had praised him before the game, saying, "He's found a good medium, and I think it's really helped his pitching. He's all business out there." Then Zambrano came to the plate in the fourth inning. After striking out swinging he eventually was thrown out at first base on the dropped third strike. As he jogged to first with lumber still in hand, Zambrano stopped halfway up the line, took his bat, and snapped it in half over his left leg. That marked the beginning of the end for Zambrano, who faced five batters in the fifth, failed to register an out, and promptly was given the hook by a riled-up Piniella. "I don't see the need to break the bat over your knee when you've got a 4-2 lead in a ballgame," the Cubs skipper growled. After initially denying that his bat-snap boogie was born of frustration...

There's no "I" in Threeway Cubs stick it to NL's best From the Daily Herald: Just when it looked like the Cubs were going to run themselves out of Saturday's game, they ended up running away with a second straight win over the team with the best record in baseball. The catalyst for all the wild plays on the bases? None other than maligned leadoff hitter Alfonso Soriano, who banged out 4 hits and scored twice on bang-bang plays at the plate. A season-high 41,597 at Wrigley Field saw the Cubs come from behind again to beat Arizona, this time with a 6-run seventh inning in their 7-2 victory. The Cubs ran through stop signs and ran into a pair of outs at home plate, but never stopped being aggressive. And it paid off in the seventh, as five different players drove in 6 runs. Soriano knocked in the go-head run with a double to the gap in left-center. He then scored on Ryan Theriot's single, barely beating the tag. That followed Soriano scoring the Cubs' first run in the third, whe...
Sunday Morning Off-Topic: Mark Twain and Mothers Day Edition!
2008-05-11 12:00:00
It's Sunday Morning, that means it's time for a little off-topic reading.  I've arbitrarily decided that until football season beings, Sunday's will be where we take a part of our day and read some examples of fantastic writing.  This week's off-topic features the King of American Writing, Mark Twain.  This piece, "On the Decay of the Art of Lying", was submitted to a writing contest for a 30 dollar cash prize.  It did not win.  But it's a fantastic piece of satire, and worth a few moments of your Sunday. Also, and please may Big Cat Country not be your reminder, but it's Mothers Day today.  This website and my passion for football wouldn't exist were it not for my Mother's persistence.  I may not understand her obsession with Oakland's Rob Ryan but she introduced me to football.  So on this day of days, I like to say thanks! For your Sunday reading pleasure, I've decided to mix it up a bit.  You see, there's been a little bit of drama recently about bloggers and sports journalism , a meta discussion that I've avoided here at Big Cat Country.  Frankly, there's nothing more boring than bloggers talking about blogging, and I refuse to put you through it.  One of the names that popped up in the discussion is legendary sports writer and author W.C. Heinz.  The  article I've posted here is called "Death of a Racehorse", which is one of the most fantastic pieces of writing ever published. It's also very appropriate, with the events of the Kentucky Derby and the ill-fated Eight Belles. It's below the fold, it's less than 1,000 words, and it's a stunningly beautiful piece of literature. Death of a Racehorse: By W.C. Heinz They were going to the post for the sixth race at Jamaica, two year olds, some making their first starts, to go five and a half furlongs for the purse o...

Ok, I decided to not sleep late or go to Church, which is what I should do, and come to this something that's called "Startup Camp" in San Francisco. I'm late so I missed the breakfast, but I came to meet other entrepreneurs and find out better how to raise money for Sports Business Simulations. Right now, I'm listening to Sun Microsystems CEO Jon Schwartz talk about why Sun's interested in startups and he's going through a Q andA about Microsoft's failure to aquire Yahoo. Generally, he's happy because it means that there's still competition in the marketplace; acquisition of companies like Yahoo by Microsoft hurt that, which hurts Sun's market for new customers. On Cloud ComputingJon says that Sun introduced a way to buy time on high performance supercomputers, but that didn't go well. It's time-sharing. But after conversations with the lawyers of big companies it was found that they -- the companies -- didn't want to share clouds with other firms. Sun is an infra...

Much better Lilly back on track From the Trib: Lilly (2-4) helped the Cubs to a 9-3 victory Saturday over St. Louis as the Cubs snapped a two-game losing streak and moved to within a half-game of the first-place Cardinals. Lilly gave the strained bullpen some rest with seven strong innings while Mike Fontenot's three-run homer off Kyle Lohse capped a six-run fourth inning that put the game on ice early. Is it difficult to convince Cubs fan not to get "giggly" after they got off to such a good start in the 100th anniversary season of their last championship? "No, nothing's hard," Piniella said. "One thing I've learned about Chicago is that you're really up or you're really down. ... You have to stay a little more even, especially earlier in the year when you're sorting things out. "It's going to be a very competitive division, but we're going to be fine." If Lilly continues to pitch like he has in his last three outings, the Cubs rotation should be somewhat back to normal....

Theriot even gives the most enthusiastic high fives. Big Z earning his keep It's about damn time you pitched like an $18M pitcher in April. From the Trib: Zambrano threw seven shutout innings, allowing five hits and striking out five, as the Cubs matched their previous franchise high of 16 victories in April. The only other time that happened was in 1969, the year of the infamous collapse. But Zambrano said this year's team is different. "You can see everybody is doing their job," he said. "We go out there and we fight to win. Kosuke [Fukudome] has been outstanding, defensively and offensively, and our pitching has been good. Everything is working right now for us. Hopefully we can continue to play like this and we can do some damage." The traditionally slow-starting Zambrano posted the best opening month of his career, recording a 2.21 earned-run average to go along with his four victories. This morning when I arrived at church, one of my friends approached me and asked if I could teach the Sunday School lesson for the teenagers. "Of Course!" I replied and I reached down into my Bible for my notes from this week's "A Tale of Two Kings" lessons that I have been posting here at the blog. They weren't there. Before I left for church, I had cleaned out all of the excess papers from my Bible."Oh, well!" I thought. I'll just teach the lesson from memory. And so I did. A couple of times, I stumbled looking for the exact verse, but the teenagers actually helped out and worked with me. The lesson went great and the teenagers paid attention really well. One of the reasons that I maintain this blog is because I am not always able to preach as often as I would like. You're #1. Lou's a lineup genious All hail mighty Lou. From the Trib: Changing lineups for the third time in five games, maybe Lou Piniella finally has found one to his liking. He should, after newcomer Reed Johnson looked at home in the No. 2 spot and even got Derrek Lee going behind him, the pair combining for six hits and four RBIs as the Cubs pounded Houston 9-7 Saturday at sun-kissed Wrigley Field. Yes, Johnson, grabbed at the end of spring training after his release from Toronto, will be starting in center field again Sunday in the series finale. "Your first start, to be able to contribute, there's no better feeling than that," Johnson said. Lee seemed to appreciate it as well, having someone running around the bases in front of him. Hitting just .222 with one RBI in four games, Lee erupted with a 4-for-4 day that included his second home run, which is twice as many as he had all last April. "We put up some runs and that's what we've been looking for," Lee said. "Obvious...

Lou's still not quite sure about the lineup He'll figure it out. How many different lineups did we see last year? From the Trib: The Cactus League-which the Cubs closed Saturday with a 4-2 victory over Seattle-has done nothing to stick any pins in the big balloon of belief with the Cubs and their followers. And although this spring has been easier and more fluid for second-year manager Lou Piniella, he still was tinkering with the lineup on the final day of the exhibition schedule. Against Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn, center fielder Reed Johnson batted leadoff, right fielder Kosuke Fukudome hit second and left fielder Alfonso Soriano was fifth, although Piniella said he would stick with shortstop Ryan Theriot, Soriano and Fukudome in the 1-2-5 spots Opening Day and for the foreseeable future. Since my last post on Wednesday, I've been working away on the book. Although it will take more work and hopefully some reader feedback before I finish revisions and tackle with the publishing question, I feel great about where the book is now. Bright and early yesterday morning, Ryan and I drove my sister Teri to a fitness examination in Moncton as part of her paramedics training (plenty of weight lifting and navigating heavy stretchers up and down stairs; my role was to nap in the car during this effort). Ooh, goodie. The first "Legs" picture of the year. Dave Van Dyck attends Sunday services at the Church of PECOTA Wow, the Trib's finally catching up. From the Trib: It may be a complicated compilation of sophisticated statistics, a computerized collection of seemingly insignificant information. But Baseball Prospectus' predictions have been a pretty precise, though non-guaranteed, gauge of how teams will perform. Just ask the 2007 White Sox, who were coming off a World Series championship and then a 90-victory season only to be picked to finish 72-90 by the modern-day baseball folks who feed historical information into computers. And those 2007 Sox finished ... 72-90, much to the amazement of those who dismissed the data spit out by the Player Empirical Comparison and Optimization Test Algorithm, better known as PECOTA. What is ahead for Chicago's baseball teams in 2008? The predictions: ? The Sox, because of a series of off-season dealings, will rebound to 77-85 and third place...

Kid K working on some kind of ZZ Top goatee More Lou on Marquis I'm not sure this one can be patched. From the Trib Hard Ball: After answering a question about Kerry Wood's performance, Piniella stopped in mid-sentence and began talking about Marquis again. "You know, that galls me about Marquis, it really does," he said. "I'm not pleased with that comment. We've had a good camp over here, everybody's getting an opportunity. Go out and win a spot in the rotation." Piniella has not spoken to Marquis about his situation and was caught off guard to hear Marquis was basically giving the Cubs an ultimatum "Sure it's a surprise," he said. "We've got seven guys here that are competing for spots in the rotation and everyone is going to be given an equal chance. After the first start of spring training, saying if I'm not going to make the rotation I'd like to go somewhere else? "He can go somewhere else right now if he wants. How's that?" Young relievers get some press I'm not su...
Sunday Morning Starter
2008-03-02 11:15:00
Nat Boyle here blogging from the windy tip of Cape Cod. Since I'll be the regular Sunday morning starter here at MLBTR I thought I'd open with a little about myself. Seems the polite thing to do. I've been a contributor for MLBTR since September. I'm a Boston University communications grad turned filmmaker living in Boston, currently studying graphic/web design.  Along with cinema, I have a strong addiction to all things baseball. And today is day one of my favorite league's slow live draft, so I'm definitely geeking out. It's Sunday which means a lot of trees have been cut down to deliver our weekly motherload of hot stove activity. So, sit back and click that refresh button.  Or better yet, subscribe to the RSS. I'll be here super-glued firmly to my computer devouring all things baseball. Oh, and if you've got a rumor, email me. By Nat Boyle
This Sunday Morning on Flashpoint

By Brendan McLaughlin Our young men and women are still getting fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan. The value of our homes and 401-K's are sinking by the day. Our very planet is heating up with unpredictable consequences. Things are tough, but at least gay people can't get married. That attitude seems to explain the nearly 650,000 signatures that put the Florida Marriage Protection Act on the ballot for November 4th, 2008. Find out who signed it, here. Though same-sex marriage is still explictly illegal in Florida, a conservative group called Florida4Marriage.Org wants to enshrine the ban in our State constitution. It would be the first and only amendment to deny rather than grant rights to Florida citizens. On Flashpoint this Sunday morning, I invited the head of Florida4Marriage.Org and a representative from Florida Red and Blue, a non-partisan, non-profit group fighting the amendment on grounds more legalistic than moral. You may conclude that I enter this...
