Sunday Do-It-Yourself Headlines/Game Thread Cubs at Astros 1:05 CT
2008-07-20 11:42:00
Little less of this today The wheels have completely fallen off this operation this weekend due to too many late nights on the part of the "editorial staff," so this morning you guys are getting really bad headlines. The only thing that really jumped out at me is that Kerry is unavailable for the rest of the Houston series because his owie still hurts. I don't even remember where I that, probably the Trib. If you find anything newsworthy, feel free to toss it up here. And then there's game today. Against the Astros. Who will probably beat us. Again. If you didn't notice, we're now only two game up on the surging Cards and Brewers. Blah. I'd like to think Dempster can turn things around today, but we're on the road, so that's probably a pipedream. And since Kosuke, Lee, Soto and Ramirez have all decided to stop hitting at the same time, our chances of scoring any runs is next to nothing. I'm just going to go watch Padraig for a while. Oh, go Cubs.

It?s Sunday morning and you?re just sitting around before heading to the grocery store. Perhaps you?re watching a little bit of the British Open. You may possibly have an ultimate frisbee game at noon where it will be over 90 degrees and you?re worried about making sure you put on enough sunscreen. Or maybe not. Regardless, here are a few links for your Sunday morning and beyond:Friday?s USA Today featured a story in its travel section about visiting Pittsburgh. This is now the second time in three weeks that a prominent newspaper featured Pittsburgh as a destination to visit. In celebration of its 75th anniversary, the iconic restaurant Primanti Bros. is getting a street named after it.Although the big story at the LGPA?s State Farm Classic is Michelle Wie?s disqualification, Ramblings? favorite Erica Blasberg is tied for 14th. I?m late to the game but you have to check out Dr. Horrible?s Sing-Along Blog. It?s a play/musical/I don?t know how to describe it starring Neil Patric...

Just when i was starting to scream “that dirty bastard…” A little time management tip. What?!? There are people who have never heard of Andrew McCarthy? A conversation with her ass. And her asses response. Apparently Dockers, JC Penneys and TLC Marketing all suck big time. And TLC Marketing’s customer service is really, really bad. Rockstar Mommy is back. Well not really, but sort of. I know some of these Muffia members. And I hate them. I have so been there. In fact I was just there last week. Aren’t kids fun? Meet the 8th Cub All-Star: No, I'm not kidding. The Cubs announced this morning that Kerry Wood will not be available to play in the All-Star Game because of a friction blister. NL Manager Clint Hurdle, who apparently stopped watching the Cubs about a month ago, then announced that Carlos Marmol will replace Kerry on the NL All-Star squad. I'm serious. Okay, so based on what he did from April to mid-May, he probably does deserve to go. But as most of us are acutely aware, Carlos has had. .  . issues. .  .as of late. Whether you think he's been struggling because of a possible injury or mechanical problems, because of a lack of confidence, or because he's been the victim of bad luck and a couple of bad pitches here and there, there's little doubt that the July Carlos Marmol is not the same pitcher we saw earlier in the season. So Clint Hurdle, if you're out there, I say the following: Hey Clint, I know that your team doesn't have a snowball's chance of making the ...

We have always known music is powerful - that it can affect people, reach them on a very visceral level. Here, then, is a reworking - a mashup, if you will - of a song that was already full of power and emotion. U2's "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" courtesy of YouTube and 1962verbodivino.Sunday, Bloody Sunday...I cant believe the news todayOh, I cant close my eyes and make it go awayHow long...How long must we sing this song? How long? how long...'Cause tonight...We can be as one tonight...Broken bottles under childrens feetBodies strewn across the dead end streetBut I wont heed the battle callIt puts my back upPuts my back up against the wall...And the battle's just begunThere's many lost, but tell me: who has won?The trench is dug within our heartsAnd mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart...Wipe the tears from your eyesWipe your tears awayWipe your tears awayI wipe your tears away (Sunday, bloody Sunday)I wipe your blood shot eyes (Sunday, bloody Sunday)Sunday, bloody sunda...

Don't ever leave me Do you have a Harden yet? He seems to be pretty good. From the Daily Herald: The right-handed starter made a huge splash in his debut with the Cubs on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants, as he struck out 10, allowed 5 hits and walked 3 in 5 1/3 innings in an 8-7, 11-inning win at Wrigley Field. Harden received love from the fans before he warmed up, and when he was done with his performance, brought 41,000-plus to their feet. "I had a lot of people tell me this was going to be a good experience, and it was," said Harden, who earned a no-decision after the Giants rallied to tie the game with 5 runs in the ninth inning. "I really didn't know what to expect coming in. I wanted to treat it like any other start. I had a lot of adrenaline going in the first couple of innings." Harden was electric from the start, as fans roared when his first pitch as a Cub was a strike. His best inning was the fourth, when he struck out the side. Giants right fielder John Bow...
Sunday Sonnets--Waking in a Dream
2008-07-13 06:26:00
There's something to be said for Sleep Late Sundays.  The kids anticipate it's arrival almost as eagerly as I.  A lazy day with no schedule.  No practices or agendas.  Just sleep in and go where the day leads us.  We normally begin our day with my now world famous from scratch pancakes.  It's kind of morphed into a whole experience.  The kids will often help with the ingredients and pancake mixing.  Sausage sizzles and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee lifts everyone's spirits.  Jazz plays softly in the background.  It has become one of my favorite family experiences.  Ah yes.  Sleep Late Sunday.  Today's Sunday Sonnet (penned just moments ago) was inspired by the unexpected.  I really slept in this morning.  It felt good.Waking in a DreamSomething surreal about sleeping in,Like waking in a time warp, groggy.Stumbling towards the bedroom doorHesitant, unsure of what lies beyond. It's quiet.  Did th...

There was not one, but two 4th of July babies in the blogosphere. Momma Says the F Word had a boy just one minute in to the holiday. He’s a cutie patootie. And the Creep has a new baby sister; the Twerp (a.k.a Maggie). A big 9 pound 3 ounce girl. And Metalia finally had some time to tell us her birth story. Cynical Dad is running for congress. With Kermit the Frog as his running mate? I’m not the only one giving hair to Lock of Love. I can barely walk in flip flops so it’s no surprise to me that flip flops cause car accidents. Suburban Scrawl has some fond (well mostly) 4th of July memories. Are you a joiner? Or is the thought of singing “Row Row Row Your Boat” in the pool with a bunch of 2-year-olds like the four corners of hell to you? Instead of spewing more bloggy hate, donate to those in need. Speaking of manners on the internet, some people still don’t get it. Dad Gone Mad is educational? He’s just as shocked as we are. What? Gay marri...

Look, these things happen, and I still love you. . . but please, please, PLEASE try not to do that again. Also, I really think you should consider trimming the goatee. You've gone from 'Texas gunslinger' to 'guy who lives behind the trashcans in the alley outside my office.' Seriously. Since it's Sunday and not many of us are around, I'm not going to write a long, involved game thread. Instead, I'll just say that I take complete responsibility for the loss yesterday, as I was the one talking prematurely about getting out of Beer Town with a sweep. While I can't undo what I've done, just know that I did a lot of soul-searching and self-examination last night, and I hope in the future to be a better person. Today we've got Sean "I'm still not sure you should really be in the rotation" Marshall going up against Todd "Why the hell didn't you pitch like this two years ago?!?!?!" Wellemeyer. Wellemeyer has had arm troubles as of late, so maybe we can do something to him that...

Bleurgh Wood reminds us of his humanity He's not a save machine, you know. From the Trib: When Cubs closer Kerry Wood entered in the ninth inning Saturday at Busch Stadium with a two-run lead over St. Louis, it seemed safe to say the game was history. Wood had become automatic lately, converting his last 12 save opportunities, including Friday night's victory with fireworks going off behind him. But Wood walked the first two men he faced and allowed three runs to hand the Cardinals a shocking 5-4 triumph to even the series at a game apiece. Rick Ankiel's bases-loaded, two-out single on an 0-1 pitch brought home the tying and winning runs, igniting a raucous celebration in the Cubs' house of horrors. "I got ahead with a breaking ball and tried to throw the next one a little bit lower and ended up hanging it," Wood said. "He put a good swing on it." So instead of taking a 41/2-game lead over the Cardinals in the National League Central, the Cubs let St. Louis creep to within 21/2...

Have you seen those green bags on TV? Ever wondered if they actually work? Pumpkin Delight tried them out and apparently the green bags do keep produce fresh, but not as long as they claim. A garden to attract humans. This is so true. Why can’t bloggers just get along? I read Dooce, Amalah, Bossy and Mrs. Fussypants and I love them all. And I can assure you they all have their own unique voice. Speaking of fighting within the mommyblogger community, Queen of Spain wrote a great Open Letter to Mommybloggers. With all this fighting I think we could all use a strawberry margarita with a side of humor (and a lot of cursing). Or maybe you like your margaritas frozen…on a stick. Popsicles for adults. Or if you don’t want that much tequila, maybe you want to try out some of the smoothie recipes from our Weary Parent Camp. It’s amazing how different Friday nights are after kids. Come back soon Cubs now worst team in baseball Maybe all their players could get something that wouldn't affect the way they play baseball, but wouldn't allow any of them to fly. That way they'd only have to make the road trips accessible by bus. From the Daily Herald: Carlos Quentin hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the bottom of the seventh Saturday, closer Bobby Jenks escaped a ninth-inning jam and the White Sox made it two straight over the Cubs with a 6-5 victory. Quentin drove an 0-2 pitch from Carlos Marmol (1-3) for an opposite-field home run into the Cubs' bullpen in right field -- his 18th of the season -- to snap the 5-5 tie. Derrek Lee was 5-for-5 with three RBIs for the Cubs, who've lost seven of 11. He led off the top of the ninth with a double and moved to third on an infield out. But Lee was stranded when Jenks got Aramis Ramirez to groundout to short with the infield in and retired Jim Edmonds on a grounder to second to end the game. Lou gives Gallagher pep...
Sunday Sonnets--A Refreshing Shower
2008-06-28 22:00:00
My kids get frightened during thunderstorms.  The lightning startles them and the claps of thunder elicit screams.  I could watch it rain all night.  I love the way night time is broken by momentary flashes of brilliant white light and I could listen to the rolling thunder on an endless replay loop.  Raindrops on a metal surface somehow soothe me.  And nothing compares to the exhilaration of watching a storm cross a body of water making its way to the screened porch where you safely can absorb it's power and beauty.  It rained last Wednesday night.  A good rain, hard with plenty of lightning and rolling thunder.  I sat, alone in my living room as the family slept and I enjoyed every bit of it.  Images of my youth flashed with each bolt of lightning and the booming thunder turned the pages as I watched the storm.  And I listened.  It was pretty cool. This week's Sunday Sonnet was inspired by last Wednesday's thunderstorm.A Refr...

I'm replaying K.O.'s Special Comment on FISA from last February just to remind those in the Senate who are hesitant about the stakes concerning the issue of telco immunity (the House has already done its worst - and by the way, I'm thinking of having T-shirts like the ones Keith describes made for Patrick Murphy, Joe Sestak and every other "Democrat" who voted to sell us out last Friday; sorry the audio is a little off).(And by the way, for anyone wondering why we care so much about this, Hunter at The Daily Kos sums it up pretty well here.)And I should have embedded this Keith Olbermann interview with Jonathan Turley last Friday before now, but there you are (I was so mad about FISA I forgot that they chose to fund the war without timelines for troop withdrawal again).

Um. . .honey. . . enough already Let's just take a moment and reflect upon the bounty the baseball gods have bestowed upon us this glorious evening: We have a nationally-televised game. . . always good for fun at LOHO. We have his excellence, Joe Morgan, possibly to be accompanied by an unknown man of a questionable occupation (and no, I don't mean Jon Miller) as seen here: Do you understand what I'm telling you? Joe Morgan. . . Wrigley Field. . .  Ryan Theriot. . . possibly Mike Fontenont. If you're a fan of "scrappy" players, tonight is your night. Furthermore, we have a chance to you-know-what the hated White Sox, further frustrating the evil A.J. Buttzynski in the process: All in all, that makes for a fun night. Speaking of fun, has anyone seen Jason 'Super Mario' Giambi lately? I can't help but feel that someone shouold have pointed this out before now: Click here to chat:

Bats explode in fourth Contreras down for the count. From the Trib: A nine-run fourth inning that featured four home runs helped the Cubs to their 13th straight win at Wrigley, their longest since a 13-game stretch in 2001. Jim Edmonds hit a homer off Jose Contreras to start the inning, and Mike Fontenot and Aramis Ramirez followed with two more, Ramirez's three-run shot into the left-field basket his third in two days. Edmonds then book-ended the inning with a solo shot off Boone Logan, joining Sammy Sosa and Mark Bellhorn as the only Cubs to hit two home runs in an inning. Four homers in the frame tied a club mark set in 1930 and matched in 2000. Edmonds received salaams from the fans in the center-field bleachers, though he declined to say whether the Cubs-Sox rivalry was different from Cubs-Cardinals. "I don't know," he said. "I can't say. You guys are going to get me in trouble. Let's leave it at that. You guys already ruined me before I got here, so don't get me in troubl...
Sunday Sonnets
2008-06-21 19:30:00
In an effort to stimulate stagnating brain cells and hopefully spawn some creativity, I am working on a little thing I think I shall call SUNDAY SONNETS.  Essentially, Sunday Sonnets will be a brief collection, quite random, of events or happenings around here in a loose verse form.  And no, I will not adhere to the truest definition of a sonnet as being a verse or song of 14 lines of iambic pentameter.  I'm not a poet--hell, I'm not even a writer--but then again you already know that, don't you.  My initial offering, though not labeled as such, would have to be last week's "That'll Teach Em".This week's Sonnet addresses the ever dwindling rodent population around Casa de Ed.  For discussion purposes let's just assume that rabbits are rodents, OK?  I'm a dad not a zoologist.  Though zoo keeper would not be too far from an apt job description.RODENTS BEWARE Rodents, beware.Though extremely cute and cuddly, your safetyCan not be as...

I don't remember who referenced Donkey Kong in the chat yesterday, but it was funny There's video here. A smashing story from the Chicago Tribune: Lou Piniella was on the mound making a pitching change Saturday at Dodger Stadium when he heard a roar coming from the first base side. "I heard all this commotion and I thought there was a wave going on," the Cubs manager said. "But there was no wave." The noise Piniella heard came from starter Carlos Zambrano, who did everything but turn green while impersonating the Incredible Hulk in the Cubs dugout. After allowing seven runs and a career-high-equaling 13 hits in a 7-3 loss to the Dodgers, Zambrano proceeded to make a scene that was off the charts even by his lofty standards, kicking and throwing two water coolers before stomping off toward the clubhouse. The Daily Herald sums it up: Matt Kemp capped a five-run seventh inning with a three-run homer, Russell Martin also went deep and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Carlos Zambrano and ...

BY ADAM RONIS http://www.newsday.com/services-/newspaper/printedition/sunday/-sports/ny-spfantasy085719314jun-08,0,3532984.column Suggested pickups AL ONLY Scott Downs (Blue Jays), RP: B.J. Ryan has been excellent coming off Tommy John surgery, but has blown two consecutive saves. At some point this season, Ryan could hit the DL. Downs would take his place and even if Ryan is healthy, he won't pitch too often on consecutive days and Downs should get those opportunities. Travis Buck (Athletics), OF: He started the season with the A's and hit just .154. He was sent down to the minors where he hit .337. Buck had 34 extra base hits in 285 at-bats with the A's last season. Radhames Liz (Orioles), SP: Liz was excellent against the Twins in his first start for the Orioles this season. He had a 4.05 ERA in the minors, but struck out 58 in 60 innings. He can reach the mid-90s, but control is always an issue. NL ONLY Josh Anderson (Braves), OF: Anderson will see some time in leftfield. He hit...
