Recently I read on another blog that they haranged their Chicago Tribune salesperson until they were offered the deal of 99 cents a week for the Sunday Tribune. Now they're advertising it right in the paper. Sign up here or call 800-311-8500 and ask for offer code X410.
Sunday Ad Flyers 11/1: P&G Saver, Toys R Us Big Book, Target Gift Card
2009-11-01 17:51:00
Target has two pages of gift card offers on technology items, inlcuding $5 gift card when you buy a 2GB Apple iPod Shuffle for $55, $10 GC for old fashioned-looking Crosley stereo @ $89.99; $20 GC for Flip Camcorder @ $149.99;, and more. Other gift card offers: $25 when you buy a Bissell vacuum, @ $149-$199 (and $20 Bissell mail-in rebate in today's 11/1 SmartSource), and a $5 GC for buying two large paper towel packs, laundry detergents, fancy razors, tissues, or Siffer WetJet starter kit, prices range from $7.99-$18.99. You can get four boxes of Kellogg's cereal FREE if you combine Target and manufacturer's coupons (thanks, Mashup Mom).* And another good deal I noticed: holiday flannel sheet sets are $15 for ALL SIZES. We have a king sized bed and an Amazon search does not turn up any sheet set for a mere $15. Wonder if the fitted sheet is big enough and stretchy enough to stay on our thick king mattress. Finally, there's a coupon for a $10 gift card with a new or transferred...

Chicago Cubs Headlines for Sunday
2009-11-01 11:59:00
Do dogs whisper to Phil Rogers, too? There's not really anything jaw-dropping in this week's edition of Crazy Uncle Phil is hearing whispers again. But with precious little else to report, we'll hop on the crazy train and take a ride till the next stop. The Aroldis Chapman market is going to be interesting to judge. The Mariners are the latest team to jump seriously into the bidding, possibly hoping to have another front-line arm so they can deal Felix Hernandez before he reaches free agency. The Cubs and White Sox have expressed interest, but it's unclear if they have the resources to compete with the Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, Mets, Tigers, Orioles and others for the Cuban with the 100 mph...

The mailman delivers to a drug treatment center. Much like the Cubs.com mailman delivers to the drug addicts at LOHO"Guess what?", I say. And you say, "That sentence is rife with grammatical problems." I reply, "you can shove it." And then you say, "Do you own a copy of The Elements of Style?" And I say "Yes I do! But I haven't used it in at least ten years." Then you say, "you really need to break that back out, because this paragraph is brutal."I then say, "But guess what? Carrie Muskat has seen fit to interact with the masses! She's answering our questions!" Let us make this a special tribute to just how far Carrie has come in...

The highlights of this weeks ads are definitely Walgreens and CVS: At Wag's you can make $5 buying Theraflu with the right coupons, and at CVS you can stock up on Advil and Chapstick for a very low price. CVS: the "spend $20, get $5 ECBs" candy deal is in its last week, and one of the included items is the Reese's peanut butter pumpkin for 50 cents. The Professor's analysis of Sunday's Bears-Falcons tussle
2009-10-14 22:12:00
The Bears and Falcons meet in Atlanta for the second year in a row in Week 6. The Bears overcame a 19-10 fourth-quarter deficit in last year's game. Kyle Orton threw a 17-yard TD pass to Rashied Davis with 11 seconds left to give the Bears a 20-19 lead. But a poor squib kick gave Atlanta the ball at the Falcon-44. Michael Jenkins hauled in a 26-yard pass from Matt Ryan and stepped out of bounds with one second left. A 48-yard field goal by Jason Elam gave Atlanta a 22-20 victory. The rematch promises to be almost as close. Both teams come into the game with 3-1 records and off their most lop-sided victories. The Bears have had an extra...
Season Starts Sunday
2009-10-12 09:25:00
You can't learn anything from the first quarter of the season.  Nothing.  Zero.  The Baltimore Ravens were the best team in football after three meaningless wins.  Patriots.  Loss.  Bengals.  Loss.  The New York Giants are currently the cream of the crop, having beaten the crappy Redskins, bad Cowboys, awful Bucs, piss poor Chiefs and beyond-miserable Raiders.  Minnesota is riding high at 5-0 as well, with their win at San Francisco suddenly look far-less impressive. The truth is we don't know now.  But we start knowing soon.  And for the Chicago Bears...real soon.  I'd always thought the Atlanta game would be the first real litmus test of the 2009 season (I picked them to the conference's number one seed) but I never...

Sunday's NFL Picks Against the Spread
2009-10-11 17:05:00
I took yesterday off from making picks but I did watch some outstanding college football including Florida's win at LSU which could have been a bigger blowout but definitely established Florida as a far superior team. I also watched Alabama drill Ole Miss on the road and look almost as good as Florida in doing it.An Alabama/Florida game would be absolutely phenomenal to see because these are, by far the two best teams in the country. It's too bad that they probably won't meet for the national title but whenever they play it should go down as the best game we've seen in years. Now on to week 5 in the NFL. There is a decent slate of games but it...

Minnicago Cwins Headlines For Sunday
2009-10-11 15:06:00
Loose? Oh we're loose, baby!   As it's now become clear that we've turned the Cubs into a chillier, more northern version of the Cubs, I think it's fitting that the headlines reflect our recognition of this. First, in a very Cub-like move, the Twinks have decided to start a washed-up pitcher against his old team tonight, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle:  "We are a Minnesota nice group and we like the heck out of the guy,'' Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.  Mention Pavano in New York -- and it's like he has an evil twin. For four years, Pavano earned $39.95 million. In return, he gave them 145 innings, nine wins and hundreds of days on the disabled...

The Professor's analysis of Sunday's Bears-Seahawks game
2009-09-24 04:37:00
The Bears (1-1) haven't won at Seattle (1-1) since 1976, but couldn't be going there at a better time. The Seahawks have at least three starters OUT and may not have QB Matt Hasselbeck (broken rib) or MLB Lofa Tatupu (hamstring), the leader on defense. That explains why the oddsmakers have made the Bears a 2-point favorite. Hasselbeck (6.7 yards/pass play) is still hoping to play. If he can't, Seneca Wallace (5.5 yds/pp) will make his 13th career start. Wallace is just an average passer but poses an additional running threat. (The NFL average is 6.2 yds/pass play.) With the exeception of two long runs (79 and 80 yards) by the 49ers Frank Gore, the Seattle defense has held up well. After two games, they rank...

The SmartSource this week include more Campbell's coupons for the Jewel-Osco Catalina, a buy-one-get-one coupon for a caramel apple or double chocolate fudge shake at Steak n Sheak (damn those look good), Dairy Queen and Quiznos Qs. The RedPlum includes several that would be useful for the week's CVS deals, including $1/1 Neutrogena hair product and $1/1 Aquafresh. At Target, I don't see any hot gift card offers like recent weeks, but there are a couple of sales: memory foam mattress toppers are on sale for $43.49 (twin) through $135.99 (thicker full version). Chicago Cubs Headlines for Sunday
2009-09-20 11:58:00
In case you hadn't heard, the Cubs lost to the Cardinals again, 2-1. Dempster once again pitched well, but so did Chris Carpenter. And it's hard to win when you give up home runs that shouldn't be home runs:"I caught the ball, and just the fence jarred it loose," said Scales, who also grounded into a double play to end the Cubs ninth. "That's all there is to it, really. I had it, and the top of the fence jarred it loose, and what are you going to do?...
Interview with a Rams' Fan About Redskins Game this Sunday
2009-09-17 16:48:00
We've beaten the Week 1 loss to death, so we're ready to move on to the Rams game. A good friend of mine, and former roommate, John Dickerman, is a Missourian native and knows everything St. Louis there is when it comes to sports. Since so many NFC East fans could give a rat's ass know so little about the Rams, I thought it'd be worth picking his brain for a quick update on the state of the 2-14 squad from last season.  Ken and I will be doing an interview with the SB Nation Rams blog in the next day, so we'll be able to get a good feel of what to expect. I appeared on their blog last night, and one thing is very clear: The Rams current WRs are about as valuable as Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly were to the Redskins last year, specificaly with the timing and accuracy of their routes. Hogs Haven: What is the current state of the Rams? Are they re-building or do they think they're a legit contender? I noticed they brought in some high-priced free agents on the OLine (Jaco...
Crew win in Champions League Play: Carry momentum into Sunday
2009-09-17 15:10:00
The first place Columbus Crew won their CONCACAF Champions League group stage match against Saprissa last night, upsetting the Costa Rican side 1-0 on the road. Midfielder Eddie Gaven scored the winner for the Crew in the 5th minute of play, when forward Steven Lenhart played him in behind the Saprissa defense, giving Gaven a golden-opportunity that he made no mistake with....
Crew win again -- Set stage for showdown on Sunday
2009-09-14 09:46:00
The Fire entered this weekend one point behind the Columbus Crew for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Now, the weekend is over and the Fire has lost ground in the race for the top spot in the East, as they currently sit three points behind the league leading Crew - who pulled off an improbable 2-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo yesterday. But the Fire will get a chance to pull even with Columbus on Sunday, when they play host to the Ohioans at Toyota Park. I'm already very excited for what will be the Fire's biggest game of the year thus far. The third meeting between the sides should be a supercharged affair with both teams...
Sunday Links
2009-09-14 00:11:00
This week's edition of Sunday Links could just be called "The DePaul News" because the Blue Demons seem to have a lot written about them over the past week. Seeing as Northwestern and UIC have yet to release a schedule - at least the Wildcats say theirs is coming soon - it's understandable that people on concentrating on things they actually can analyze. The most interesting piece of news that came out during the week was the fact that DePaul was welcoming four walk-ons. Why are walk-ons interesting? Because one had the opportunity to go on scholarship to another Chicago school and instead chose to play for the Blue Demons. Nate Rogers had an offer to attend Chicago State on a...
Sunday Flyers: Golden Gate Edition
2009-09-13 22:09:00
So, here I am in San Francisco, and you'd think I'd be out visiting my old haunts and eating all my favorite foods. I did eat some good food, but today I've been hanging out at my friends' apartment, waiting for Nutmeg to call out to me from her sickbed. It's a nice apartment on a great little shopping street in Bernal Heights, but still. It's not the getaway I'd hoped for this weekend. But lucky for you, my confinement means that I had time to pick up a Sunday Chronicle (my alma mater -- I used to be a business reporter there) and look through the ads. If you didn't already know, there are five coupon inserts in some...

Chicago Cubs Headlines/Live Game Thread for Sunday
2009-09-13 15:14:00
We almost got to experience a thrilling comeback yesterday, but it wasn't to be. Pre-closer Carlos Marmol showed  up and unleashed a typical 2009 inning. Marmol entered the game with the score tied at 5-5 in the ninth. He gave up a hit but got a double play. Then it was walks to Jonny Gomes and Kevin Barker before pinch hitter Drew Sutton made Marmol and the Cubs pay with a 2-run double to the right-field corner....

Sunday Flyers 9/7 -- Labor Day Sales

I have never understood exactly WHY there are no coupons in the Sunday inserts on holiday weekends, but that's how it is. So don't go out and buy an extra papers today. There are deals in the flyers, though. Theoretically because of Labor Day there should be more sales. Well, let's see. Yep. Here are the LABOR DAY SALES: Toys R Us is having a sidewalk sale today and Monday only, with a bunch of toys and Crayola products at 50% off and a free ice cream sandwich with any purchase of $20 or more. They're also advertising a "Trade-In Event": get 20% off a car seat, stroller, travel system, high chair, play yard, bassinet or crib from participating brands...
Chicago Cubs Headlines For Sunday
2009-09-06 15:44:00
Yesterday was the Derrek Lee and Rich Harden show in Citi Field, with a special guest appearance by Aramis Ramirez. As Gordo points out, if, before the year, you knew that Derek Lee would have the year he's having and Rich Harden would be on pace for 29 starts, you'd be wondering how many games over 100 the Cubs would win this year. Unfortunately, that didn't quit turn out to be the case. But at least we can revel in yesterday's win over the Mets. Rich Harden (9-8) struck out 10 in five innings, Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run shot and Carlos Marmol pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for his ninth save.Lee returned to the lineup after missing two...
Weekly soup for Souper Sunday: Roasted carrot and herb-dumpling soup
2009-09-06 04:16:00
The summer is over in Germany, the first autumn signs are visible. It's getting colder, so I served a Roasted carrot and herb-dumpling soup for lunch. The recipe can be found at Donna Hay's website (click). I had no parsley in my garden, so I only used chives. My sons liked the dumplings, it's a really delicious soup. Sunday Links
2009-08-31 05:05:00
This week's edition of Sunday links is abbreviated, but still has something interesting things in it. The Big East Conference had two new previews released last week. It's no surprise that DePaul is picked at the bottom. Everyone sees the fact that Dar Tucker left and the team was terrible last season and automatically assumes the worst. I think DePaul could be a little bit better than last place, but it'll depend on what the Blue Demons choose to listen to this off season.UIC officially announced its roster this week. The loss of Scott VanderMeer and Josh Mayo to graduation is going to be compounded by the loss of Tori Boyd and Jovan Ignjatovic. The front court depth of the...

A Sunday of 'Brigadoon' and book signings Aug 30, 2009
2009-08-30 17:25:00
Well, I've been watching the Sunday morning political shows which are mainly about Senator Ted Kennedy and his passing last week, yet soon I shall motor into the city to attend a matinee of Brigadoon, a nostalgic favorite of my childhood about a mysterious Scottish village that's only visible for one day every 100 years.Maybe we can devise a way for Washington DC's Capitol Hill to sign up for that schedule...we'd all be safer and richer, I suspect. Then it's a dash to a town celebration in Winterville, GA which is being held for my niece, Donny Bailey Seagraves, whose first novel Gone From These Woods is released this very weekend. So it should be a fun, if rainy and thundery, day!
