Thought this an interesting way to advertise health insurance for surfers, which was direct marketed to me on MySpace. Yesterday's post with the Kurt Vonnegut reminded me of Mary Schmich's June 1997 column in the Chicago Tribune which has been attributed to Vonnegut as an MIT commencement speech (he didn't give it that year). Schmich introduced the column as the commencement address she would give if she were asked to give one.  When I went searching for it (it's listed below), I found this great little video by Baz Luhrmann.  Enjoy both. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now. How sunscreen protects ur skin?
2008-03-26 17:15:00
Sunscreen (also known as sunblock, suntan lotion) is a lotion, spray or other topical product that helps protect the skin from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and which reduces sunburn and other skin damage, with the goal lowering your risk of skin cancer. However in the United States, the term suntan lotion usually means the opposite of sunscreen, and instead refers to lotion designed to moisturize and maximize UV exposure and tanning rather than block it. These are commonly called indoor tanning lotions designed for use with tanning beds or just suntan lotion if designed for outdoor use and may or may not have SPF protection in them. The most effective sunscreens protect against both UVB (ultraviolet radiation with wavelength between 290 and 320 nanometres), which can cause sunburn, and UVA (between 320 and 400 nanometres), which damages the skin with more long-term effects, such as premature skin aging. Most sunscreens work by containing either an organic chemical compound ...

What Sunscreen Can Do To Your Skin
2008-01-05 18:18:00
Sunscreen creates a chemical barrier between sunlight and your skin. Your skin is at risk anytime you venture into sunlight- whether on the beach, in your backyard or on a brief walk. Sunscreen are not just for the beach.Your sunscreen should have a sun protection factor (SPF) of a least 15... and ifyou're headed to the beach or pool, it should also be water resistant. With anSPF-15 sunscreen, you will remain burn-free for 15 times longer than you would with unprotected skin. You should apply sunscreen liberally to all areas of skin that will be exposed to the sun. Do so at least 15 minutes before heading outdoors, so it has a chance to be absorbed. Pay attention to easily overlooked areas--like your feet, earlobes, a bald spot, the back of your hands, the top of your ears, the nape of your neck and the tip of your nose.make moneyReapply at least once every 3 hours for as long as you are out in the sun. Even withwater resistant sunscreen, it's prudent to reapply after going into t...

Sunscreen Products Actually Promote Cancer
2007-08-25 14:49:00
Source: News Target The idea that sunscreen prevents cancer is a myth. It's a myth promoted by a profit-seeking tag-team effort between the cancer industry and the sunscreen industry. The sunscreen industry makes money by selling lotion products that actually contain cancer-causing chemicals. It then donates a portion of that money to the cancer industry through non-profit groups like the American Cancer Society which, in turn, run heart-breaking public service ads urging people to use sunscreen to "prevent cancer." The scientific evidence, however, shows quite clearly that sunscreen actually promotes cancer by blocking the body's absorption of ultraviolet radiation, which produces vitamin D in the skin. Vitamin D, as recent studies have shown, prevents up to 77 of ALL cancers in women (breast cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer, lung cancer, brain tumors, multiple myeloma... you name it). Meanwhile, the toxic chemical ingredients used in most sunscreen products are a...

Green tea sunscreen
2007-08-23 16:10:00
I don't know, you probably are sick of me talking about sunscreens all the freakin' time, lol. But I can't help but get excited when I discover a new sunscreen with interesting characteristics, like this one, Alba Botanica Green Tea SPF 30+ Sunscreen 4oz. $9. Why is this one interesting? Well, a lot of the sunscreens are just...blah, if not downright greasy and pain in the butt to wear. They offer good sun protection. But other than that, they aren't that exciting. I'm always looking for sunscreens that have a little something extra. This one has green tea extracts. I'm a big fan of green tea. It's a powerhouse of antioxidants. It has remarkable repairing abilities. You know your skin's protected from the sun and the elements. Give it try :) Available at Tobi.com.
