16 Sony PS3 consoles used instead of one super computer to simulate two black holes merging is one reason why scientists love gaming consoles. We know that gaming consoles are getting more and more powerful everyday and they are easily programmable as research computers, scientists are in fact finding real world applications for them every ...

EKA: India?s Super Computer
2007-12-29 15:30:00
EKA: India’s Super Computer It is indeed a proud moment for India as Tata’s Eka supercomputer has made a spectacular entry as the most powerful computer in Asia. It has also been ranked as the fourth fastest in the world in the Top 500 ranking of supercomputers. What exactly is a supercomputer, you might well ask. Well, it is a computer that works at many times the speed of normal computer and has immense power compared to the normal computers that we see. The main use of supercomputers is to perform highly calculation-intensive tasks. They would include problems involving quantum physics, analysing data to forecast weather, research on climate and global warming, molecular modelling, etc. No wonder such computers are to be seen at top universities, or with the defence services, or at research laboratories. In fact, the Top500 list is released twice a year by the University of Tennessee, USA; Mannheim University, Germany, and at NERSC Lawrence Berkeley...

New Super Computer upgrades
2007-09-30 23:20:00
In 2003, the U.S. Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) installed a $25 million supercomputing system with about 2,000 of Intel Corp.'s Itanium 2 processors. At the time, the machine was recognized as the world's fifth most powerful computer. Make your PC more useful. Get the free Google Pack. That was then. Four years later, the PNNL's system has dropped to 113th place on the Top500, a list of supercomputers maintained by a group of university researchers. The Itanium-based hardware is no longer meeting the laboratory's computational needs and is being replaced by a more powerful system under a deal with Hewlett-Packard Co. that was announced on Friday. HP, which also supplied the existing system to the Richland, Wash.-based PNNL, said that the new one will contain 4,620 of Advanced Micro Devices Inc.'s new quad-core Opteron processors. Peak performance will be about 163 TFLOPS, vs. 11.8 TFLOPS on the system now in use ...
UMBC & IBM bang heads to develop cell based super computer: Same processor
2007-09-26 15:07:00
There is new technology on the horizon thank to researchers at a new computing lab at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County where they are developing apps for IBM?s Cell Broadband Engine. What is cool in my eyes is that they are using the same processors that powers the Sony PS3 gaming consoles. This new research is ...
Student and professor build ‘budget super-computer’
2007-08-31 18:21:00
When Tim Brom 07’ set out to build a budget supercomputer with Calvin computer science professor Joel Adams, he didn’t know the product of his efforts might end up in his checked baggage headed for England. Brom, now a graduate student at the University of Kentucky continuing his studies in computer science, worked with Adams to build Microwulf, a machine that is among the smallest and least expensive supercomputers on the planet. “It’s small enough to check on an airplane or fit next to a desk,” said Brom. This may prove useful next summer when Brom and others from his graduate program travel to England to do work that will require “a significant amount of computing power.” And as the price of commercial supercomputers is often prohibitive for many educational institutions, bringing a “personal” supercomputer like Microwulf could be a cost-effective solution for the group of graduate researchers. “So far as we can tell, this is the first supercomputer to have th...
