5% cashback on purchases at supermarkets, gas stations, drug stores - Citib
2008-04-27 12:09:00 IBD note: The following info was posted by SD member ultraman sfo on SD back in January 2008. I am not sure if the 5% cashback offer is still valid. QUOTEThe best deal I could find is an unadvertised Associated Bank Cash Rebate Card. It is not advertised on their site and is offered in conjunction with Citi. The cash back rebate on gas is NOT a teaser rate but a permanent feature of the card. Here are the details:- 5% cash rebate on supermarkets, gas stations, drug stores (drug stores = 5% back on prescriptions, another out-of-control expense).- 1% on everything else.- Max $300 Rebate Dollars every calendar year (equal to $500 in qualifying purchases/month)- 0% BT for 9 months.- No annual fee.IMO this offer, so far in my search, has been the best "offer" that balances a non-teaser rate with a relatively high rebate limit. To apply you have to call 1-877-577-9485 (the application process is automated so be prepared to spend around 10 minutes on the phone). To begin I simply pressed t...

Supermarkets: designed to sell
2008-02-09 07:19:00 Ever wonder why you always buy more than you got on your shopping list? Supermarkets use psychology and marketing techniques to sell as much as possible. Their only goal is to make you buy things and when you've done that, they want you to buy more. Social scientists have studied our shopping behavior. With the results of those studies supermarkets create specialized marketing strategies. An enormous effort goes into designing a supermarket. They consider all the different aspects, ranging from optimal product shelf space to deciding which background music makes you spend the most.

Supermarkets are chicken
2008-01-13 12:55:00 To be fair, not all are. Sainsbury's, Waitrose and the Co-op all came out well from 'Jamie's Fowl Dinners', compiled and presented by Jamie Oliver. Both of my non UK readers will wonder what I'm talking about. So, for you, a synopsis of the TV show was to follow chicken egg and chicken meat production from egg to table, comparing the methods of rearing, letting the audience judge which was appropriate for their budget and emotional needs.Previous programmes in the week showed Hugh fearnley-Whittingstall running what had to be anathema to him - a factory chicken farm. Together they made gripping, if somewhat horrifying television.Since I work from home very often, the weekly shopping often falls on my shoulders. I cook, too, and I've been cooking and eating budget chicken for years. On Thursday, even before Jamie's Fowl Dinners, Sainsbury's were completely out of free range chickens, but the shelves of value chickens, the dirt cheap stuff I have been in the habit of buyi...
Australia Ends Use Of Plastic Bags In Supermarkets
2008-01-11 19:33:00 Back in 2004 (wow already that long ago?!) it was stated that if plastic bags weren't voluntarily phased out in Australia by 2007 that the government would step in and make it mandatory. Well they've done it...sort of. The phase out will begin by the end of 2008. By the way, you think you're doing everything you can by recycling these plastic bags? Granted it's much better than throwing them away, however it still takes energy to process them in the first place then to recycle them. Now in my opinion, the only option is reusable bags. Not only are reusable bags eco-friendly but they are much more stylish then the ugly white or yellow ones that are given out by stores. Reusable bags are sturdy (i.e won't rip when you're halfway to the car spilling out a load of possibly embarrassing products for all to see) , usually washable and much better for the environment. Take a look at the picture from the article in 2004 where the turtle is ingesting a plastic bag- is that what you want...

Shopping in Australia: Supermarkets
2007-11-23 09:46:00 It seems to me that about 50% of the ebayers I meet to collect things I have bought from them are poms like me. One lady I met who lived on the Gold Coast was selling everything from the house in order to go back to Blighty for family reasons. We asked each other what we missed about the Motherland and, as I was still in the heady stages of my emigration 'euphoria', I didn't say a lot, apart from missing friends and family obviously. She countered with a long list of things she was clearly looking forward to seeing/having again, one of which was Tesco! I too was a regular Tesco-ite (?), mainly because it was on the way home from work and cheaper than Sainsbury's. But it was Sainsbury's I always went to for posh food for occasions or nice treat food. In all honesty, I don't feel I've missed out by not being able to frequent either any more. The supermarkets here are just about as good and very similar and familiar to shop in.The choice of supermarkets in SE Queensland seems to...

Anger as supermarkets sell beer cheaper than water
2007-11-12 09:28:00 Supermarkets are selling beer at a cheaper price than water, fuelling concern over their role in Britain's binge-drinking crisis. Despite repeated public health warnings, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda now offer lager at just 22p a can - less per litre than their ownbrand-mineral water and cola, and cheap enough to allow someone to get drunk for just £1. An investigation by The Mail on Sunday has uncovered a fierce alcohol price war between the major supermarkets.

Probe says 'too few supermarkets'
2007-11-01 14:11:00 A revamp of the planning system to allow more supermarkets to open in some areas of the UK has been called for by the Competition Commission. My quote of the day: "It certainly looks like anti-competitive behaviour on a magnificent scale." Yeah, because food is so important, we can't leave it to the market. As is the infrastructure and medicine. When will people learn that you can't force the market to do 'good' things?

But suggested changes to the planning system would be nothing less than a bonanza for the larger retailers and spell disaster for town centres and the small independent operators.

More competition for Whole "Paycheck" Foods, Publix Supermarkets
2007-09-26 16:54:00 I knew this would begin to happen. Do you remember Boston Market and how everyone thought they were the best thing ever for hot family style foods? Then the grocery stores realized they could easily remodel and provide areas in their stores for the same purpose, which killed BM's market share. The shares tanked and they ended up closing most of their stores after over expansion.I love Whole Foods, Wild Oats, PCC, etc, but I'm sure you have noticed can very expensive to buy Organic from Whole Foods. In addition, Whole Foods and Wild Oats were two of the only national chains and for a while, were able to command higher prices. While there expansion has not been as aggressive as Boston Market, I think Whole Foods may have taken their situation for granted. I've told Ferbit that it's only a matter of time before the supermarkets begin to expand their organic sections. Plus, smaller stores like Trader Joes will begin to carry more organic foods to enter this hot market. I'm sure jit...

Web 2.0 Changed Even How We Look at Supermarkets
2007-08-27 18:25:00 Since today is Monday, let's watch a little video to show how even supermarkets are changing into 2.0. Though i must say this video at first sight seems like it was made in the 80s with the very weird music choice and darn those casts look like pornstars speaking with a very European accent, no offence! On one hand i found this video funny and the person who made this must have been a web 2.0 savvy person or someone crazy about web 2.0. I like the pandora style part the most, turning small things into something big and will someone comment on this video? Enjoy yourself with the video!

Chavez nationalizes supermarkets-almost
2007-02-13 05:48:01 In an effort to prove once and for all that Communism always harms a country, Chavez gets angry because some people want to make a living selling food. Venezuela Could Control Food Distribution Under Draft Decree Monday, February 12, 2007 CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez's government has drafted a decree allowing officials to take control of food distribution chains, including supermarkets and storage depots, if services are interrupted, officials said Sunday. Industry and Commerce Minister Maria Cristina Iglesias said the decree would help curb supply problems that have caused severe shortages of meats, milk and sugar in recent weeks. Industry officials blame the shortages on price controls that oblige retailers to sell at a loss, while the government says the fault lies with unscrupulous speculators, including supermarket owners and distributors, who hoard food or boost prices. The National Assembly, which is entirely controlled by a coalition of pro-Cha...
