New York’s Surreal Love!
2008-05-23 00:00:00
Adrienne Curry posted these behind-the-scenes video from something she is doing with her husband Christopher Knight, Rock of Love’s Brett Michaels, I Love New York’s Tiffany and Flavor of Love’s Flavor Flav. She did elaborate what they were all doing together, but if those BTS videos are a hint of what it will be like ...
Surreal Surroundings in Charlotte, Vermont
2008-05-16 17:01:00
We live in the middle of high density moose territory. Yesterday Mitch and I walked through it all - someone even has a tent hidden in the brush for animal watching. Not sure who's it it, but I am going to sit in it and watch. After the rain...and after we finish this insane move. The clover patches weave in and out of soft marshes, grassy fields, large tree pockets, underbrush, and forests. It is amazing. I also saw a fisher cat one night and a bobcat ate one of my neighbors chickens. Fishers are scary and chickens are cute, but there is something raw out here in the farmland. Something primal and alive and real. I cannot express how much I love it and how this move is circling the completeness of my life. I am home in my wood nymph paradise. We have wetlands and marshlands right on our fields and roufous-sided towee's are making a nest outside of my office window. I must run off and finish the insanity of making this place my wood nymph paradise, but wanted to share ...
History of Surreal Photography
2008-05-05 19:19:00
By Domen Lombergar Surrealism in photography was one of the major revolutionary changes in the evolution of photography. Rather than art, photography was reviewed as a copying effort. Surrealism is the introduction of the ?more than real’ images to the art forms. Surrealism was a movement in the art and intellectual activities, emerged after World War I. ...

Strange article and even stranger interview with Snoop at The Guardian online. The journalist did make one interesting observation however: "The thing that makes hip-hop different from other genres is that is that credibility is often found in the level of your success, not the quality of your music" Correct!
My Surreal Life: I Had Lunch With Jessica Alba Today
2008-04-04 08:59:00
I spent five hours at Kira's middle school today. It was their Open House, and for two hours before classroom visits they had a World's Fair with food booths, games, jugglers and live music. I had volunteered to set up and work the PTA bake sale, so there I was in our makeshift booth made out of lunch benches, with my frosting-smeared shirt and plastic gloves hustling brownies and cupcakes for
A Surreal LA Night-Where Else?
2008-03-29 10:36:00
Good morning on this cold and dark Saturday. The Boston Red Sox play their first of three exhibition games against the LA Dodgers in quite the setting-the Los Angeles Coliseum. They hope to set a baseball attendance record as more than 115,000 fans are expected. That's three and a half Fenway Parks, more than two Yankee Stadiums filled to their capacities! Here are some interesting facts about the late night (at least here) game, to be broadcast on NESN at 10:00pm EDT..."The Dodgers are coming back to the Coliseum one more time to play the Red Sox in an exhibition game, and officials are hoping for a world-record baseball crowd of 115,000."I remember the Coliseum all too well," said commissioner Bud Selig, who watched the Sox in Japan and plans to be at tonight's game. "My team, the Milwaukee Braves, lost the 1959 pennant there. I remember those Wally Moon shots. There's a lot of history here. We're recreating something from 47, 48 years ago, and it's just amazing."It'll be a ...

With Surreal Madness, Strange Boys Play ?Funny Games?
2008-03-16 00:57:00
CHICAGO ? Imagine a film with no redeeming or uplifting emotional qualities with evil that tortures the soul, squirm-inducing narrative elements and a relentless anxiety that practically has us ? like the characters in the film ? screaming for mercy. Imagine also that this film is excellent. ?Funny Games? is a shot-by-shot remake of writer and director Michael Haneke?s 1997 Austrian film of the same name, which now features American actors and their presumed sensibilities. Naomi Watts from ?The Ring? is Ann: the 30-something matriarch of an upper-middle class American family who?s heading for their vacation home. Her husband, George (Tim Roth), and son, Georgie (Devon Gearhart), are accompanying her. As the family approaches the heavily gated development, a murky apprehension is in the air as familiar friends offer tentative greetings. Surreal Moments
2008-02-20 16:35:00
I walked into a lecture by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. It was a really strange feeling. I had gone through the exact same lectures, read all of the informational packets (or propaganda...if you so please), and there I was, entering a classroom full of hopefuls and their parents.I felt like telling them to relax, and enjoy their senior years. If you've worked hard enough to contemplate applying to Northwestern, the rest of the process is mainly out of your hands. Just make sure the documents arrive in time and the recommendations get written. After that, just chill out and enjoy the rest of the year. But of course, I saw anxious faces, and notebooks full of notes. It's a different feeling to be in and look out as compared to be out and look in. Maybe a year from now, those who make it in will have the same experience I did. You come to realize that a lot of the work you put into high school doesn't matter when you start college. The SAT scores, the extracurriculars, th...
The Surreal Life, Country Edition - Or, how I learned to give up Lattes and
2008-02-01 17:21:00
Last night I dropped in at our local grocery to grab a few groceries, and was almost run over by a chain smoking, wig wearing Ruth Gordon clone driving a mini van. This isn’t as unusual as it would seem, since the average age in my tiny little town seems to be about 101. Seniors who can barely see over the steering wheel of their cadillacs regularly veer into traffic without signaling (or even noticing other drivers), and parking spaces are considered to be suggestions more than hard and fast rules. The busiest joint in Durham is the Legion (that’s Canada’s version of a VFW hall), and the crossing guard by the local school seems to escort more old guys in rascal scooters across the road than she does school children. Drive through Durham, and your initial impression is of a typical small town in rural Ontario - not a lot of money, slightly down at the heels, and with a rapidly aging population. You need to look closer to see the changes that are taking place here....
Band of Cats Outtakes - January 2008

Our last set of outtakes where so much fun, we decided to make it a regular feature here on Band of Cats. Since we?re always trying new things with the camera there?s always a few shots that don?t quite work out but are still kind of interesting in their own unique way. Like the Joker said in ...
Surreal Day Part 2
2008-01-19 03:21:00
You know, it wasn’t a strange day.  But it certainly wasn’t normal. It wasn’t strange that my “Monkey Class” again did horribly on their grammar quiz.  What got me angry was that after all we had gone through grammar-wise, this was supposed to be easy for them.  It’s the last major grammar unit in “Up and ...

7 Surreal Urban Street Art Installation Projects: Brad Downey Brings Wonder
2008-01-04 00:31:00
“It would be so nice if something made sense for a change,” exclaimed Alice. While his work may seem as amazing and fantastical as something straight out of Alice’s Wonderland, Brad Downey’s creative street artwork does have a rhyme and reason beneath the madness. Downey is a New York street artist with a twist: his ...

A surreal life

2007-10-08 05:17:00
There is something surreal about the number, like say 4,300 lashes weren't enough. Last year, in the (ahh, name escapes me, Sudan?) three lesbians were sentenced to 150 lashes; two died. I assumed this is meant as a public and prolonged death - very 14th century. While the US goes overseas to invade countries for "women's rights" ala Afganistan, I am guessing no "gay rights invasion plan" is going to be forthcoming. Nor a condemnation from the UN.Sigh.

Surreal Paintings of Vladimir Kush

I believe the surreal paintings of Vladimir Kush show the artist's professional skill and draw the viewer in so that they accept the impossible images enough to see the metaphors in them and explore the different layers of meaning.

The Surreal Life
2007-08-29 22:42:00
We explore the world and learn information through our senses; this, along with our brain's processing of this information, forms the basis for how we perceive the world. Living in the world day after day, we learn to accept certain processes, occurrences, and events as commonplace. Through this repetition, we learn what is real in the world.Exploration of the dreamworld and other altered states of consciousness provide a unique perspective on this perception of reality, though. This is not to say that the world is unreal, but rather that our perception of the world is strictly limited by our sensory input devices. The dreamworld is just as real to our minds as waking life, since dreams contain the same type of visual, auditory, and tactile sensations to our minds.Dream experiences are generally considered "less real" than waking experiences, perhaps because in waking life others can corroborate and share our experiences, thus confirming the reality. Yet it is difficult to argue fo...

Surreal Irony
2007-08-03 16:13:00
As the Daily KOS holds its annual conference of bloggers gathered for the Blogfest of Electronic Civil Disobedience Convention and on behalf of the millions upon millions of bloggers out there I am reminded of one thing....Free Speech and Independent Voices are tantamount to the well-being of a Free Country. When one person is squelched and or beaten to a pulp like a domestically terrorized Dixie Chick we all are. When shows like The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report epitomize and take to extreme the insidious disingenious nature of the mass media and all its shortcomings the only thing to do is point out the outrageousness of the system.. Without Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert we would all be in that time warp capsule pod thing wondering alone "Is It Just Me Or....."No it's not just you.Bill Maher is another pointer outter or "I noticed" kinda guy. Bill Maher points out the hypocritcial surreal ironies of our socio-political time zone. Without all these these...

If I had to choose just one word with which to describe the compound in which I lived in Kyoto it would probably be "surreal". Indeed, living there was a very surreal experience.Outside of the compound's walls was one of Japan's oldest and most traditional cities, a world of vibrant colors and smells where Japan's past and present intermixed freely. However, once you passed over the compound's threshold, and its large barred gates swing shut behind you, you were no longer in Kyoto, or any other place that could be found on a map of Japan. Or so it sometimes seemed, at times.Inside the compound everything was as American as Apple Pie, or at least as American as you can make a converted Siheyuan (Chinese courtyard) style mansion. The Stars and Stripes flew from every apartment, red white and blue bunting hung from ever eave, and everything except the architecture was kept artificially American, from the pick nick benches and the barbecue pit in the outer courtyard, to th...

Fictional Surreal Art By Jacek Yerka Jacek Yerka lives in his native home in Poland & has won international awards for his works. During university he resisted constant pressures from his instructors to adopt the less detailed & realistic techniques of contemporary art & developed his own technique.Jacek writes about the selection of his pieces: "...a project is then presented to the Family Jury (my wife and 4 daughter), that in most cases issues the rejection sentence, accompanied with bitter and negligent comments. Surreal afterthoughts ? abject mayhem
