Suspense

The principle of Suspense – Check your Grammar
2009-09-19 19:14:00
Language dictates that one of the most effective techniques be used for the delivery of any kind of message is suspense. Suspense being one of the most favored elements of conversation brings about such delivery in a most appealing way. The structure of the narrative in question should therefore be maintained for as long as this element serves its purpose. However, introduction of a component of the story at an inappropriate point makes the use of suspense all too useless. One should learn that with suspense the information that has been withheld all through the statement should be introduced either gradually or suddenly as fits the circumstances. This should however not happen if your audience is totally unprepared for the facts you are about to divulge. One should therefore leave the attention of the audience to fill in the left out details in order to hold their interest for a significant length of time. Introduction of your own opinion or assessment of the circumstance being n...

Brazilian Grand Prix: Suspense held racing fans on the edge of their seats
2008-11-02 20:04:00
The final race of this exciting 2008 Formula One season was held today at Interlagos, Brazil and the drivers championship was still in the balance between Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton of McLaren. For Lewis Hamilton, a fifth place was good enough to be declared world champion. For Felipe Massa, a victory combined with a 6th or worse finish for the British driver was needed. Massa who started from the pole position completed his part of the task as he led this race from start to finish. The race started under rainy conditions, shifted to dry conditions and finished once again under rainy conditions for the last six laps of the race. The final portion of the race gave the racing fans something to remember. As Massa crossed the finish line, his rival had given up the fifth place to Sebastian Vettel and was in sixth place, desperatly driving to gain back his fifth position. With a couple of laps to go, all eyes were on Lewis Hamilton who was struggling, holding on to the fifth...

LEGAL (AND SPIRITUAL) SUSPENSE "WITH A TWIST"
2008-06-07 16:28:00
Legal (and Spiritual) Suspense ?With A Twist?A Review of James Scott Bell The Whole Truth (Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2008)ISBN 13: 978-0-310-26903-8 337 pp $14.99 The literary phrase ?with a twist? is an understatement because it refers to tales which actually have a number of ?twists?, not just one. A good example is provided by the novel under review here. I really cannot elaborate without ?giving away the story? so I will say no more than to encourage you to read Bell?s latest legal thriller to find out what I mean by these multiple twists. Let me also say that if you liked his Presumed Guilty, you will like this one too. The story focuses upon a recovering drug-and-alcohol-addict, Lawyer Steve Conroy, who is barely staying afloat and is hardly in any shape to undertake the untying of any Gordian twists. To the contrary, his inept efforts result in his own body being tied up -- literally. One of his methods of coping, which makes reading this book such a delight, is hi...

Tom Piccirilli: Award-winning Master of Suspense Pens an Instant Classic
2008-04-29 15:30:00
Tom Piccirilli is one of the hardest working writers out there, selling his first book while in college and never looking back. Over the last twenty years, he's created keen psychological portraits of people in extreme situations, mysteries as noir as they come, and suspense-thrillers that'll keep you, as they say, on the edge of your seat. Some of the most recent of his books include The Midnight Road, The Fever Kill, and, in another week, the amazing The Cold Spot, of which suspense superstar Ken Bruen says, ""[the book] is truly dazzling. Piccirilli has taken the mystery to a whole other level."  Publishers Weekly calls The Cold Spot, "a violent and dark tale in an appealingly noirish narrative style, highly economical yet bracingly intimate." As ever, Piccirilli approaches his work with honesty, humanity, and a keen sense of the traditions he's working in and with--highly recommended for anyone who loves mystery and suspense. This may just be th...

2008-03-08 13:50:00
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reviews the upcoming Laura Joh Rowland's new book The Secret Adventures of Charlotte Brontë. Biographies of Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) chronicle her quiet life in Haworth, a remote Yorkshire village (...)It was one such biography that inspired Laura Joh Rowland to fictionalize the author's life in "The Secret Adventures of Charlotte Brontë," a literary mystery. "She was the ultimate yearning, romantic, creative spirit," Rowland says in an essay on her website (www.laurajohrowland.com).Rowla-nd, the granddaughter of Chinese and Korean immigrants, clearly is a creative spirit herself. Her many earlier novels include the acclaimed "Snow Empress" and "Red Chrysanthemum." In an addendum to "The Secret Adventures of Charlotte Brontë," she points out that its fictive world is built around a scaffolding of actual people and historical events. As the story begins, Charlotte receives a letter from her publisher accusing her of breach of contract (he ...

The Appeal (Hardcover)
2008-02-04 14:04:00
The jury was ready. After forty-two hours of deliberations that followed seventy-one days of trial that included 530 hours of testimony from four dozen witnesses, and after a lifetime of sitting silently as the lawyers haggled and the judge lectured and the spectators watched like hawks for telltale signs, the jury was ready. Locked away in the jury room, secluded and secure, ten of them proudly signed their names to the verdict while the other two pouted in their corners, detached and miserable in their dissension. There were hugs and smiles and no small measure of self-congratulation because they had survived this little war and could now march proudly back into the arena with a decision they had rescued through sheer determination and the dogged pursuit of compromise. Their ordeal was over; their civic duty complete. They had served above and beyond. They were ready. The foreman knocked on the door and rustled Uncle Joe from his slumbers. Uncle Joe, the ancient bailiff, had guarded...

Tale Of Suspense: I Married A Wargamer
2007-12-17 19:58:00
Before I met my husband, I had never heard of historical wargaming. I mean, I had been in and out of comic shops my entire life and had seen different miniatures on the wall. Not interested, I assumed that it was all ?Dungeons & Dragons stuff?. (My husband hates when I say that!) I had certainly never ventured into the back of a comic book store to witness any kind of games being played. It was brave enough to be in there at all. Being a lone girl in a comic shop is akin to going into a seedy convenient store in the middle of the night. Make no eye contact, get what you need, and get the hell out before you?re surrounded. ?You mean like RISK?? I asked him, as he tried to explain it on our first date. ?Hmm, kind of,? he said, ?but no. It?s much more complicated. You see, we have very detailed miniature?? ?Oh! Like Dungeons & Dragons!? (groan) ?No.?I was later led to his workbench where he showed me dozens of tiny trees, tiny cars, tiny cottages and tiny people. It looked...
Singapore URA ends suspense with award of Marina View site
2007-12-06 03:01:00
Singapore URA ends suspense with award of Marina View site MGPA’s bid is about half the price it paid for plot next door By KALPANA RASHIWALA (SINGAPORE) The Urban Redevelopment Authority finally awarded Marina View Land Parcel B to Macquarie Global Property Advisors (MGPA) unit MGP Kimi Pte Ltd yesterday, about three weeks after the tender for the 99-year leasehold site closed. The longer-than-usual time to evaluate the tender, which was based solely on price, had led market watchers to speculate the state’s reserve price for the confirmed list site might not have been met. The reserve price for confirmed list sites is confidential, the URA said yesterday, when asked by BT. The tender for the plot had attracted just two bids, and the higher offer, by MGP Kimi, of $779.42 psf ppr, was less than most market watchers had expected, even after factoring in a minimum hotel component stipulated for the plot. MGPA’s bid for Land Parcel B was about half the $1,409 psf ppr ...

Movie Review: Awake- Excellent, deep, suspense movie
2007-12-02 02:06:00
link to trailer Awake is a focused thriller with an original enough premise and a sufficiently deep subject matter to lift it above its genre peers. Clay Beresford (Hayden Christensen [Darth Vader]) is a billionaire with a weak heart and a strong mother. He's in love (quite understandably) with Sam Lockwood (both Jessica Alba and her bad self), a relationship of which his mother, Lilith (Lena Olin), disapproves. Lilith also opposes Clay's choice of doctor, the thrice sued, debt-ridden, Dr. Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), who happened to be on call during Clay's first heart incident and with whom Clay develops a friendship. Set in the present day before a Kucinich presidency, Lilith hires the top private heart surgeon in the country to perform the required transplant, but Clay courageously insists that Jack be the attending physician. Jessica Alba On a bravery streak, Clay also notifies his possessive mother that he's in love with Sam and intends to marry her which he does tha...

An Election Day with Little Suspense
2007-11-06 03:57:00
Tomorrow is election day in a number of places and there's not a whole lot of suspense that I'm aware of. The two governor races are expected to be blowouts, with one incumbent (Barbour in MS) winning in a landslide and the other (Fletcher in KY) losing badly and probably struggling to top 40% of the vote. There are down-ballot races in those two states as well, but I don't even know who's running in them, let alone have much interest in who wins. In OH-05 there's a primary election to select nominees for a December special election to determine a successor to the late Paul Gillmor. While there's suspense over whether after a very nasty primary campaign State Rep. Robert Latta or State Sen. Steve Beuhrer will win the Republican nomination, there's not much doubt that the winner of that race will be elected in December. In Philadelphia voters are poised to elect a real Nutter as mayor tomorrow, as Democrat Michael Nutter is heavily favored to defeat Republican Al Taubenbe...

Ennio Morricone - Holocausto 2000 OSTLabel - Beat RecordsRecorded - 1973, 1977Style - Soundtrack, Experimental, Suspense* Another scary Halloween warm-up OST, just to get you in the mood. (From MovieGrooves)Two Ennio Morricone soundtracks on one CD. Holocaust 2000 (1977) was directed by Alberto De Martino and starred Kirk Douglas, Simon Ward and Agostina Belli. It's the story of a Middle Eastern nuclear plant executive discovering that his son is the Anti-Christ. Totally inspired no doubt by The Omen. Morricone's orchestral score does a good job of creating feelings of suspense and menace.Sesso in confessionale (1973) was directed by Vittorio De Sisti. It's a documentary about the 'problems of sex' with contributions from a priest, theologian, sexologist, journalist and psychologist. From Morricone's score it sounds a pretty interesting movie. The music is tense and experimental with lots of sparse orchestration and interesting audio and sound effects thrown in. We'd love to ...
