Sustainability as a Science
2012-01-03 13:10:00
Concepts of intergenerational equity and carrying capacity are conjured by the term 'sustainability.' Principles of sustainability have increasingly infused and informed environmental policy over the last 30 years, but is it a science unto itself? Recent research confirms sustainability science as a
How Important is 'Sustainability'?
2011-12-28 18:38:00
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers recently published the results of its third annual "sustainability" survey. Some of the respondents dismissed sustainability as a fad embraced by companies solely for its public relations value, while others expressed their support for sustainable design
Sustainability in a Growing World
2011-11-23 18:09:00
When looking for solutions for a sustainable future, the tendency is to either hope for the development of technology or point fingers at institutions or corporations to make changes. But in a constantly expanding world, how important is individual consumption in making steps forward? Studies sh

CALL TO ACTION: on legalizing the slaughter of whales
2010-05-19 18:50:00
President Obama is my President; and by that I mean he is MY President, my choice, my hope, for change, but I have to speak out about this. I am completely shocked by this administration’s support of the “deal” to legalize commercial whaling after a decade’s long ban on the slaughter. The IWC will meet next ...

Markets, Sustainability and the End of Politics
2010-03-17 16:03:00
Within a capitalist economy there is always a settlement between the interests of capital and the interests of labour. As Shelley reminded English workers nearly 200 years ago in his poem ?The Mask of Anarchy?, the greatest power always rests in the hands of labour since ?Ye are many – they are few?. Under a ...

Grocery stores ranked on seafood sustainability
2009-07-03 01:00:00
Greenpeace sent out their Sustainable Seafood Scorecard earlier this week, ranking grocery store chains. I don't eat seafood, but I do know about the issues the underwater environment faces from poor operations, as well as supporting these operations. But the findings for the best and worst of the chains were somewhat surprising to me. Of stores found in Chicago, Whole Foods, Target and Dominicks came in 3rd, 4th and 5th, respectively. Walmart even made the Top 10. Trader Joe's, a Chicago fav, however ......

Image by: tamachanhaazarashi. Designers these days face a lot of pressure to not only do good design, but also to do the right thing. Indeed the importance of sustainable and environmentally friendly products cannot and should not be underestimated. However, while Designers are central to the creation of these products, it takes a lot more than just having the "Will" to do it.
Sustainability: Let the Market Choose
2009-05-23 15:09:00
The push for Green has waned recently, reacting to the dipping global economy. Is sustainability in product design down for the count? Consumers consistently vote with their pocketbooks (and have for decades). Manufacturers, too, opt for a quicker impact on the bottom line, and not being held respon

Aren't they elegant? These reclaimed-wood Iconic Panels are ideal for retail settings, hotel interiors, and temporary installations such as trade-show exhibitions, but also make a great accent wall for residential furnishing, too. They not only utilize lumber salvaged from olive-barrel staves, razed gym bleachers, and blighted buildings, but also their producers B+N use low-VOC varnishes and water-based glues that don?t contain formaldehyde. Humans v. Sea Lions v. Salmon: A Lose, Lose, Lose Situation
2009-03-03 02:28:00
As is so often the case, the human solution to this human-caused problem is to create a problem for someone else, either a human of less power or a nonhuman species. Humans get all mixed up about causes and solutions and justify their stinky behavior (overfishing, sea lion killing) with seemingly altruistic reasoning (feed people, save the salmon).

Mr. Sarver is part of the Michigan Wind Working Group, and will speak on the different types of turbines currently in use in Michigan, the feasibility of wind generation in our area, and ideas for ordinances and guideline for heights and locations for wind turbines in communities in Michigan. The U.S. Department of Energy's Wind Powering America program has a goal that 20% of all electricity will come from wind power by 2030.
