My Latest Sweater
2010-11-23 02:33:00 I partially knitted the front of this sweater three times before I finally got it right. The first time it was smaller than the pattern indicated (even with my gauge being accurate) and the second time I noticed the tiny cables were much looser than they were pictured in the pattern. As in not as pretty. So I unpicked and knitted one size bigger and twisted twice as tightly (every 4 rows instead of every 8) and was finally satisfied. The fun thing is, the cowl and the sweater are actually two separate pieces so that if you're cold you can wear it with extra warmth (and fashion) but without for a cooler day (or a coordinating scarf). All in all very nice. And I'm on to another. If you're interested in this one for yourself you can find the pattern here at Lion Brand (for free!!). And by the way . . . Finally Finished My Sweater
2009-12-02 10:00:00 This is, hands-down, the craziest knitting pattern I've ever made and by the time I got done with it I'd unpicked and restitched enough to have made it three times over. But . . . it is finally done and I like it.It's a shrug and you start from the cuff of one sleeve and work back and forth until you widen into a large circle for the body then narrow back to the second sleeve and on down to the final cuff.Once you've got that you sew up the arm seams then pick up a ton of stitches completely around the circumference of the body/circle and knit in the round to make this big ruffle around the body. The ruffle folds down into a collar at the top and hangs on either side as a lapel.But the pattern (which I found at the Lion Brand Yarn site) didn't have a diagram of the garment so when I needed to adjust the stitches for a better fit I couldn't tell what part I was even working on. Crazy.But the good news is that it knits up very quickly with chunky yarn and size 11 needles so even...

2008-04-14 13:37:00 I've been looking for an embroidered sweater to revamp ever since seeing a really cute cardigan in Just For The Frill Of It. I found this on in our local charity shop for £3.50 and as it wasn't the sort of thing I would wear as it was, found a strange sense of liberation when it came to taking the scissors to it! I was a bit worried it was all going to unravel as soon as I cut it but it really didn't. I had read that machine knitted garments don't spontaneously unravel like a hand knitted garment would (as all of us hand knitters know SO well!) Because I knew I'd never wear it as a sweater I feel I could just go a bit wild with it. I did zigzag stitch on the edges which gave it a nice ruffly effect (I think it's called lettuce stitch) and did a double layer on the body and sleeves. I'm really pleased with the result.
