Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street Deluxe - Complete Edition [SO
2008-05-25 17:09:00 Stephen Sondheim's Grand-Guignol blend of opera and musical theater is a perfect match for director Tim Burton's gothic sensibility. The result of their encounter is a superb screen musical that, despite early fears from the show's fans, preserves most of the score ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" being the most egregious loss) and, perhaps even more importantly, its spirit (regular Sondheim orchestrator Jonathan Tunick did the new arrangements). And yes, Johnny Depp can sing. Granted, singing in a movie is easier than it is onstage, but still, Depp is at ease with the material, if a little thin-voiced. Helena Bonham Carter is a bit more problematic as Mrs. Lovett (there's a reason this character has been played by the likes of Angela Lansbury and Patti LuPone on stage) and her take on "The Worst Pies in London" tries hard but lacks gleeful gusto (she fares better on "By the Sea"). Almost outshining Depp is Helena Bonham Carter, who at times is hilarious as Mrs. Lovett, who sells the worst pies in London. Together the two of them form a very charming duo. I was stoked when I saw ?The nightmare before Christmas,? making a Bing Crosby musical of something quite macabre. I was joyous when I saw my two favorite actors modeled in clay and performing together, as husband, and wife in ?The Corpse bride? but dubious when I heard of ?Sweeney Todd; the Demon Barber of fleet street,? A musical, I said, Like ?Paint your wagon,? only without Lee Marvin? But I saw it despite these concerns, showing a great faith in the trio of Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Burton. My faith was well placed, the film was ghastly, entertaining, heart wrenching and hilarious at once. 2008-02-09 10:19:00 Just last week I made my monthly excursion to the cinema, our cinema complete with becomingly sticky floor, outrageously overpriced popcorn and tatty seats, it was, as I had left it, only worse now. But I didn't mind particularly as the film started promptly once I had bum on seat, as it were.And what a film it was. "Sweeney Todd" is definitely old hat for a lot of you considering varying release dates but I just couldn't ignore the opportunity to plug Burton's masterful eye and the marvellous produce of his insatiable hunger for visual beauty. I'm not donning film critic boots here but am more concerned with the Gothic costume we all know and love which was so astoundingly enrapturing in Burton's interpretation of the hit musical. Although I fear Costume Designer Colleen Atwood's somewhat too stage-y creations are approaching over-exposure in Burton's continuous string of dark and quirk-fest offerings I could appreciate those featured in Todd.Having considered the below, who...

But full of music, singing and buckets of blood, will it scare off any audience?Burton's movie, despite the singing, reminds me of nothing so much as a Hammer horror movie. This is probably as much due to the particularly vivid colour of the blood used copiously (very reminiscent of 'Dracula, Prince of Darkness') as anything else. But Burton has been threatening to replicate the Hammer style all his career and most explicitly (before now) in 'Sleepy Hollow'. It does, however, make me wonder how Hammer never made a stab at this most quintessentially English horror tale. The barber from Fleet Street who slits his customers' throats, sending their souls to Heaven and their bodies to Mrs Lovett's Meat Pie Shop (as tasty filling for the pastries), is a figure who has kept me away from barbershop shaving all my life.
