Sweet Mustard Sweet Potatoes
2008-02-24 16:00:00
For those of you who think sweet potatoes are only for the holidays I'm here to call you to repentance. Full of vitamins and good stuff they're tasty any time of year--especially when they're combined with things like cranberries and syrup.A note here on the difference between sweet potatoes and yams. What we commonly call "yams" in America are actually just a darker, sweeter variety of sweet potato. What you see in the produce section are two varieties of the same thing, one is just darker, smaller and sweeter than the other. I prefer to cook with these smaller ones myself unless I'm looking for a dryer texture such as you'd see with a regular potato. Actual yams are native to South America and don't often show up in American markets. They're popular in the Caribbean and South America, can grow up to seven feet long (What?? Talk about your monster tubers!) and are dark like the bark of a tree with purplish flesh. I think I'd know one if I saw one now, based on that horr...

Stir Fried Sweet Potatoes With Onion-Carrot Salad
2008-01-14 05:17:00
I was alone at home for yet another weekend and was dying to make something other than dal, sambhar, wheat dosa and all the other normal dishes I make over the weekend, especially if I am alone. So I went to the corner vegetable wallah, looked around and my eyes caught a pile of sweet potatoes in the corner. I immediately decided to buy it, not giving much thought to what I would make with them.To my horror, I got back home and came to realise that my internet connection had conked off. I was relying on looking up online for some recipes to cook the potatoes. Since that option was ruled out, I just started putting together my own recipe and it turned out so well that I was sad there was nobody to share it with.Stir Fried Sweet Potatoes With Onion-Carrot SaladWhat I used: For the Stir Fried Sweet Potatoes:Sweet potatoes cut in round slices - 150gmMarinade:Curd - 1 tbspGinger garlic paste - 1 tspChilly powder - 1/4 tspJeera powder - 1/2 tspCoriander powder - 1 tspPepper - 1/4 tspSalt ...

Autumn in a plate
2007-10-16 15:08:00
Fall : The most colourful and vibrant season of the four. The air is cold and crisp and Nature shows off it's most flamboyant side. It fills me with joy. Makes me want to be a child again and go frolicking in the multi-coloured leaves scattered all over the walkways. In fact last Autumn I did just that. On my way back home from somewhere I came across a stretch of footpath that was so thickly covered with coloured leaves that I just could not stop myself from kicking and blowing the leaves as I walked . Those are moments I will always cherish. Even the markets are so colourful . There too the theme is red ,yellow and orange. My favourites are pumpkin, butternut squash , sweet potatoes, red and yellow peppers and of course last but definitely definitely not the least sharon fruit or persimmon as it is otherwise known. I could live on these for the next few weeks. The Soup you see here is the perfect celebration of Autumn. It's the perfect food on a cold October night with warm crust...
The Drunken Sweet Potatoes
2007-10-16 12:23:00
Sweet potatoes are a funny thing to some people.  Many folks don't like them after having been tortured with badly prepared yams at Thanksgiving dinner over the years.  Other people think they should only be served with certain entree items, all the while thinking, "No sweet potato can match the majesty, beauty and gosh darn goodness of a regular potato!"  Me?  I like 'em.  They're pretty versatile and can be prepared to match almost entree you willing to cook up.  Today's recipe is a simple twist on mashed sweet potatoes that involves some tequila.  "Tequila?!"  Yes indeed!Ingredients:2 large Sweet Potatoes, peeled & cubed5 TBS Jose Cuervo Gold Tequila1/4 cup unsalted Butter, softenedDry Spice Mix:1/2 tsp Dry Mustard1/4 tsp Ground White Pepper1/2 tsp Kosher Salt1/2 tsp Kosher Salt1/2 tsp Thyme1 pinch Cayenne Red Pepper1 pinch Ground Nutmeg1 pinch Ground SageCooking Procedure:Place the cube sweet potatoes ...

Recipe: Sweet Potatoes with Black Beans, A Food Philosophy
2007-08-25 23:14:00
This is one of my go-to recipes, one of those early recipes I devised out of leftovers which has since then given me the title of “Leftover Queen”. I have been thinking a lot lately about my food philosophy, where it came from and how I have become the kind of cook that I am. I am a cook born out of passion combined with necessity. I learned from an early age from my grandparents and my mom that leftovers can be a wonderful thing. I come from a big Italian extended family and so we were always cooking for large groups of people, which meant that we usually cooked more than was necessary which ultimately left us with a lot of leftovers. It was a tradition in my mom’s house that when the fridge was too overwrought with leftover containers that we would have what we called a smörgåsbord, which is actually a Swedish word meaning “sandwich table”, but has been translated into English vernacular to mean a buffet or variety of hot and cold dishes. It was my favorite time of t...
Baked Sweet Potatoes
2007-08-20 21:37:00
Bake these as you would white potatoes, just for a little less time - about 45 minutes, depending on their size. Prick their skins with a fork, wrap them in foil and put them in the oven at 200c. When they're cooked, slit them open and grind over lots of black pepper, add a sprinkle of sea salt and a good dollop of sour cream or cream cheese. They are very sweet and very comforting and would be great with sausages or grilled chicken on a cold and dreary night, like the ones we seem to be getting at the moment.
Chapter 2: Yin Food - Sweet Potatoes!
2007-07-11 17:42:00
According to a Chinese book, “Seamen often enjoyed longevity, because they eat no other grains except sweet potatoes.” Sweet potatoes are particularly good for the spleen, pancreas, and kidneys, and they are often used to treat chronic constipation, jaundice, and diarrhea with blood in the stools. It may seem strange that the same food can be used to treat both constipation and diarrhea, which are two opposing symptoms. However, sweet potatoes can treat constipation because they are full of yin energy, which can lubricate the intestine - and when the intestine is lubricated, bowel movements will occur. Sweet potatoes are particularly good for constipation due to the dryness of the large intestine. Sweet potatoes and the Chinese yam are effective for diarrhea for the same reason. In the traditional Chinese medicine, many herbs are equally good for two seemingly opposing symptoms. For example, one herb may be good for hypertension and hypo-tension at the same time. This is...

Stir-fried Sweet Potatoes (Delicious Fast Food)
2007-04-29 23:37:00
Now fasting is something I have tried to do umpteen times. I have friends who religiously fast atleast once a week. The reason behind the fast may be religious or a self-imposed dietery restriction but they never fail. Taking inspiration from one such friend I have tried fasting on several occasions . What normally happens on the day I decide to fast is this:I wake up that day full of conviction that today I will not succumb to my hunger and will successfully complete my fast by having only liquids throughout the day. Well , I do manage to survive on liquids (plain water, milk, juice and butter-milk) ,but only till 2 p.m. I drink something or the other on an hourly basis. After 2 o'clock my body and mind start their protests. The mind is already into overdrive and torturing me by conjuring up all possible images of delicious foods. Then the body starts protesting with the onset of a headache. And headaches are something I just cannot handle. I tolerate the headache for about 1/2 an ...
