Switched On: The Linux ultraportable opportunity
2008-05-07 20:30:00 The US smartphone market may continue to be dominated by mobile platforms from Apple, Microsoft, and RIM, but Linux has been creeping into ever more mobile devices in the last few years. Some Motorola RAZR 2 models have donned a Tux, Palm is looking to Linux to drive its next-generation consumer smartphones, and Android's backers hope to spread it to an even wider array of handsets. Linux is also driving many avant garde connected consumer electronics devices such as the Chumby, Nokia N810, Amazon Kindle, Dash Express, and whatever the fertile minds tinkering with Bug Labs' modules are envisioning,. Even the remote control that houses the user interface of Logitech's Squeezebox Duet is a Linux computer.

SWITCHED ON: SLACKER IN YOUR SLACKS (PART 2)
2008-04-14 20:57:00 Filed under: Portable AudioEach week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment. Last Switched On introduced the Slacker Portable, a device that is as noteworthy for great value in bringing a steady stream and great variety of free music -- including on-demand favorites from those with a premium subscription -- as it is for its design quirks.None of these are are as frustrating as the device's touch strip used to provide quicker access to on-screen selections. Unlike the touch strips on older Creative Zen models, it uses absolute positioning that activates the button at that part of the screen. Unfortunately, this means that stray touches can cause the interface to jump from screen to screen and even skip tracks. The Slacker team may have considered the touch strip a compromise for a device without a touch screen, but at some point realized that their implementation wasn't up to the task. Slacker turns the touch strip off ...
KLIA Heist: CCTVs not switched on during shoot-out
2008-04-11 05:13:00 KUALA LUMPUR: The closed-circuit television cameras outside the Kuala Lumpur International Airport departure hall were not switched on during the shoot-out. And it was also revealed that the off-duty policeman, who was initially thought to have been caught in the crossfire, was involved in the shoot-out with the gunmen. The policeman, however, was hit twice and his police-issued semi-automatic pistol was taken by the gunmen. Federal Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Mohd Bakri Zinin said checks showed the CCTVs were switched on again after the five-minute shoot-out. "It has hampered police investigations. We were hoping that the footages from the CCTVs could have provided us with information about the gunmen," Bakri said. "What's the point of having CCTVs if they are not switched on? It is not for decorative purposes." Bakri declined to elaborate on the matter but said police were working on several leads, including photofits of the suspects, b...

2008-04-02 04:20:00 Filed under: Features, Portable Audio Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment. The Slacker Portable is the proverbial elephant being inspected by blind men. One is the crop of portable MP3 players, to which the device’s service represents free, fresh music on the go in exchange for user control of track selection. Another is the bevy of online internet music sites such as Pandora, Last.fm, Finetune and others, to which it represents the leap from the beb to portable entertainment. A third is the traditional consumer electronics industry for which it portends a connected future. And a fourth are XM and Sirius, which now appear on track to merge in part due to the kind of competition that the Slacker Portable will ultimately provide. The Slacker Portable picks up where last year’s promising Sansa Connect left off. While that device was billed primarily as an MP3 player that boasted tight integration w...

Paul Allens alien hunter gets switched on!
2007-10-12 22:23:00 Well yesterday was a big day for space exploration, and the hunt for aliens. Paul Allen's big boy SETI array was switched on yesterday, starting off with 42 of the total 350 antennas that it is scheduled to have when complete. Each antenna is 6 meters in diameter and together will be capable of scanning over 1 million star systems in the outlook of someday finding some form of life out in the universe. Since the telescope station is a joint venture between SETI and the Radio Astronomy Lab at UC Berkeley it will also be used to study other phenomena such as blackholes, supernovas, and other "exotic space objects". It's a massive array and only set to get bigger as the project continues. Source: BBC

Switched On: The Foleo imbroglio (Part 1)
2007-08-14 00:24:00 Filed under: Features digg_url = 'http://digg.com/offbeat_news/S-witched_On_The_Foleo_imbroglio_-Part_1'; Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment:If anything, Palm's Foleo seems like it was designed to elicit instant geek cred. It's small, thin and light, and its solid state storage helps provide long battery life. It has instant-on capabilities and supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It even runs Linux and all for only $500. However, quite to the contrary, much of the reaction to Palm's latest mobile foray has run the gamut from confusion to scorn, with some calling the product "Folly-o" or "Fooleo." The core problem that the Foleo seeks to address is easy to understand, but its positioning is a moving target. Here's how early adopters are becoming lost in Foleo's rationale: Palm: Smartphones continue to gain more processing power and more memory.Users: OK, that's fair enough.Palm: However, they are still defic...

2007-08-01 23:38:00 Switched On: It browsed from another dimension!Posted Jul 24th 2007 7:04PM by Ross RubinFiled under: FeaturesEach week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment: Microsoft named its browser a humble explorer; Apple encompassed a whole safari. Do you get the sense that the developers of the 3D browser "SpaceTime" are setting their sights a bit higher? Most 3D browsers from the early days of the web, such as those from ActiveWorlds and Blaxxun Interactive, became best-known for avatar-based chat, in many ways the precursors of Second Life. 3B, a more recent effort, allows its users to set up web pages and photos on walls or billboards in various 3D environments such as Tech (think bridge of USS Enterprise), Beach, Lounge and what the developers call "Girly" (sort of a pre-teen girl's bedroom) presumably located in Hannah, Montana.SpaceTime, though, differs from all these avatar cyberplaygrounds, using 3D instead as a means t...

The viral effect of music sharing would be hard to build, though, starting from scratch in such competitive market with a $250 device. As I wrote shortly after the Zune's debut, "the place to encourage music sharing should be in software or on web sites that can easily reach millions overnight, as Napster and Rhapsody have done."Others expressed frustration that Microsoft wasn't using the Zune's WiFi capabilities for more pedestrian tasks such as wireless syncing or wireless access of Zune Marketplace's catalog via subscription. These limitations overshadowed discussion of the value of WiFi in a di...
Remotely switched on, cellphones can spy on you
2006-12-03 04:04:03 Tapping cellphones may become a new criminal surveillance for the FBI. CNet has a write-up on how it was done. “Nextel cell phones owned by two alleged mobsters, John Ardito and his attorney Peter Peluso, were used by the FBI to listen in on nearby conversations. The FBI views Ardito as one of the most powerful men in the Genovese family, a major part of the national Mafia.” “Nextel and Samsung handsets and the Motorola Razr are especially vulnerable to software downloads that activate their microphones, said James Atkinson, a counter-surveillance consultant who has worked closely with government agencies.” In recent news, we saw Switzerland tolerating VoIP telephony monitoring, based on quite the same technique. People incidentally download Trojan horses softwares, which could be activated remotely. And for commercial reasons, Google is elaborating a way to turn on laptop microphone to listen to users’ immediate surroundings to increase rele...
