They are quite interrelated, especially if a design or marketing strategy is consumer focused. Thus if you look at the iPod Touch?s marketing tagline, you can safely say, intentional or not, that Apple embraces the fact that their iPod Touch is a Pocket Computer. In a way it could also be seen as retro fitting as the iPod Touch struggled to find its place between an iPhone and an iPod. To round it up its benefits Apple has position the Touch as also a iPod and a entertainment (gaming) system. Regardless, it is clear that the iPod Touch is not an iPhone minus.
