Interview: Answering Demands for Playable Aliens in Tabula Rasa - SendMeRSS
2008-01-28 23:51:00
Interview: Answering Demands for Playable Aliens in Tabula Rasa When Tabula Rasa was released, the gaming community was swift to express its dismay that the only playable race in the game was human. The design team, smart folks that they are, paid attention. "We took some of that feedback and we ran with it," says Paul Sage, the game's lead designer. The result is that as of version 1.4, which should be available some time this week, you can finally play as a Brann, Forean, or Thrax. Sort of. The characters are actually human/alien hybrids. "You use the DNA from the aliens to augment yourself," explains Sage. Adding aliens to the playable roster was always part of the plan for Tabula Rasa, but the community feedback inspired the team to include it "a little earlier than we thought we would." The decision to launch the game with only one playable race struck some as odd,but emphasizing the humanity of your character was one of executive p...

Player Feedback for Tabula Rasa Patch 1.4
2008-01-12 19:11:00
Tabula Rasa changes, or should I say, “should be” changes. Last 2007-12-14 Feedback Friday, they mentioned about the coming changes to the attributes: Body points will now add a bonus to your armor rating Mind points will now add a bonus to your ability damage Spirit points will now add a bonus to your chance to deliver critical hits Health has now been upped for all characters These changes are coming with Patch 1.4, so in other words, attributes are pretty useless pre-1.4 (most players agree). But with 2008-01-11 Feedback Friday a player asked the question I raised in-game, here quoted: Player: With regards to the attribute changes mentioned in last week’s Feedback Friday, two questions. 1) Are those changes in addition to the effects that the attributes currently have, or instead of? 2) Will your attributes still stay the same across all clones, across all subsequent clones, or will we now be able to respec attributes as well as skills when we clone? And they ...

Tabula Rasa: One Step Short of Greatness
2007-12-18 16:48:00
Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa is the new MMORPG out from ncSoft. It supposedly blends first-person-shooter gameplay with an mmorpg-type world and leveling concept, which is something I've been in favor of for some time. I've always been disappointed with the mechanics, especially combat, of mmorpgs. I feel that WoW's greatest weakness is its lack of frantic combat. Everything seems so paced, so stoic. Same with just about every other game out there of that genre. Tabula Rasa attempts to remedy this flaw by incorporating elements of the First Person Shooter into its combat and gameplay. However, I think this is a misleading description of what Tabula Rasa actually does. First of all, it's not "first-person" it's "third-person" and because of this, there are really no FPS elements. There are elements of the third-person shooter instead. This is not at all the same. There is an aiming system. Big deal. I want an all out first-person-shooter ala Counter-Strike, Unreal Tourn...

Tabula Rasa Launch Hindered By Too Many Beta Testers - SendMeRSS
2007-12-07 03:15:00
Tabula Rasa Launch Hindered By Too Many Beta TestersSending out way too many beta tester invites for Tabula Rasa was the greatest flaw in the title's recent launch, says lead designer Richard Garriott. While he acknowledges the marketing benefits of the traditional MMO beta system, he also feels it gave the game's crucial hardcore audience an unfortunate early look at the title when it was still 'broken.' He explains:We burned out some quantity of our beta-testers when the game wasn't yet fun. As we've begun to sell the game, the people who hadn't participated in the beta became our fast early-adopters. And the people who did participate in the beta, we've had to go back to and say 'look, look, we promise: we know it wasn't fun two months ago, but we fixed all that. Really, come try it again.' In the past the beta system -- in which thousands of gamers are given the opportunity to test games before release -- has been seen as an act of goodwill between d...
Tabula Rasa - PC review
2007-12-04 08:08:00
Brilliant in some ways, and fun at times, but too flawed to justify the monthly fee!!If I were reviewing RGTR as a single player action shooter, I would probably be calling it brilliant, and if it were a free to play rpg, I would be able to overlook it's flaws, because it does shine in some areas, and it is fun for a little while. But in all, this game just lacks the sense of reward that would hold my attention long enough to justify the monthly fee.For me, the main appeal of an rpg is the sense that that my character is developing and being rewarded as I progress through the game. Unfortunately, this is completely missing from Tabula Rasa.Character's advance according to a tier system, where you choose a new class at levels 5, 15, and 30. But in truth, the abilities you get at the upper tiers are often less effective then the lower tier abilities. In my experience, the best weapon in the game is the shotgun which is available at level 1 to all characters. While designing the lowe...

Raise your hand if you are excited for Tabula Rasa.  I am very interested in trying the beta.  While not much info is available the videos look compelling.  Apparently you can lock onto targets which aids in action play without the difficulty that many have with first person shooters.  Richard Garriott is the executive producer.  He made some of my favorite games.  Ultima 4 and 7.  As a kid I dreamed of growing up and having his job.  The fact he is involved tells me there is at least a chance that the game involves more delema style decisions and complex emotional situations as well as a very imersive world.  I am not saying the game will be perfect because he is involved, but I think it is a good sign. I know… you’re thinking the same thing I thought when I read it… What the hell does that mean… Well Ross at nCircle provides the definition, “A clean slate; a blank or erased tablet.” He also provides a short, but interesting post on the subject of backwards compatibility. The ultimate question of his post is summed up by the introduction: Backwards Compatibility. I’m hardly a Mac user, but from what I’ve heard, they don’t bother with it. Every Mac OS release is a clean slate (or close to it) and the end user just has to adjust. On the other side, Microsoft spends millions (billions?) making sure that you can still open that document you put together using Word 95 in Office 2007. Which approach is better? Define better. Give it a read and see if you agree.
