At least 5,000 sorcerers in Tajikistan
2008-01-20 08:44:00 Here's a more in-depth look at the recent banning of witchcraft, sorcery, and fortune-telling in Tajikistan (through a bill adopted by the Tajik parliament last month), courtesy of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting: Convicted sorcerers can expect a fine of between 180 and 240 US dollars, several times the average monthly minimum wage. Repeat offenders will be subject to even larger penalties. But while sociologists suggest sorcery is only a manifestation of wider social issues, rather than a problem in itself, the authorities insist the rising number of magicians makes drastic action necessary. Outsiders might be surprised at the strength of popular faith in magic in a Muslim society. Yet belief in mystical healing powers, casting the evil eye and other magical practices is an enduring tradition in Tajikistan, as in other parts of the broader Central Asian region. ... According to local media, the police survey, which started in 2006, revealed the existence of at least 5,0...

Campaign against sorcerers in Tajikistan
2007-12-19 12:31:00 Tajikistan has launched a crackdown on witchcraft and fortune-telling as part of an anti-poverty drive (following on an earlier ban of lavish weddings and expensive funerals). Tajikistan is the poorest of the ex-Soviet nations in Central Asia and occultism is unsurprisingly on the rise: "Those indulging in sorcery and fortune-telling shall be fined between 30 and 40 times the minimum monthly wage (85 to 113 pounds)," says the text of a draft law backed by the lower chamber of the Tajik parliament on Wednesday and obtained by Reuters. It's a step in the right direction. Source "Tajikistan launches campaign against witchcraft," Reuters, December 13, 2007 Related posts • Witch arrested in Kuwait

News & Current Events :: Tajikistan Considers Restrictive Religion Law
2007-07-11 15:25:00 Author: Eric Subject: Tajikistan Considers Restrictive Religion LawPosted: Wed Jul 11, 2007 9:25 am (GMT -4) Tajikistan Considers Restrictive Religion Law Tajikistan (MNN) -- A new religion law in Tajikistan could make ministry difficult in that former Soviet bloc nation. Slavic Gospel Association's Joel Griffith says Christians are concerned about the proposed religion law draft. "It could be interpreted by officials as banning all unregistered religious activity." Griffith outlines some of the other restrictions. "Religiously affiliated political parties would be banned. Children younger than seven would be banned from receiving religious education. Young people [would be] forbidden from being members or participants in religious organizations. All religious education in private houses would be forbidden.
