Tales of Colt 45 w/ Drop the Lime
2008-06-07 16:00:00
Following suit with Red Stripe or Sparks, Colt 45 is high on the tales of sponsoring all things hipster (which is awesome 'cuz I'd much rather some malt then some orange battery acid). Tonight their mini tour hits home with Señor Drop the Lime (aka Curses), Snakes say Hisss, Stay High, and Terry Diabolik dropping by south W'burg for some free booze and great tunes. 21+ Read More...Digg this | Email to a friend | Reddit

Tales from the Fort
2008-06-05 04:43:00
Tis the season, to be Fortean. If the release of Jim Steinmeyer's biography of Charles Fort and Tarcher's reissue of Fort's books in anthology form weren't enough for you, check out this new website - Tales from the Fort: The Charles Fort Files... This site is an effort to organize the research of Charles Hoy Fort into a more easily utilized resource by gathering and placing under various subject headings the vast amount of information scattered throughout Fort's books. The information contained within these pages is gleaned from extensive study of the four non-fiction books published by Charles Fort in his lifetime. The headings under which the phenomena are placed include 'Falls' (strange things falling from the skies), 'OOPARTS' (Out of Place Artifacts), Creatures, UFOs and Apparitions. If you don't have the time to work your way through the books, this website will probably be a good resource. As Emps says over at Cabinet of Wonders, "dig into ancient astronauts, Ufol...

Food Fantasies and Other Tales of Food and Love

The stereotypical eating disorder sufferer is an adolescent, white female and comes from a middle- to upper-class family. Russian writer Lara Vapnyar has a lovely story in ...

Full Disk Encryption Tales: So, How Are Those Stolen SSNs Used?
2008-05-28 07:59:00
The importance of full disk encryption solutions for laptops and other digital media has been espoused a myriad of times by numerous security vendors like AlertBoot.  We?ve all heard the stories regarding identity theft, and the importance of keeping Social Security Numbers safe.  Then there are those unique stories that cause one?s jaws to slacken.  Those unique, imaginative capers that remind me again and again why protecting data is no laughing matter.  For example, SSNs could be used to build up your wealth two cents at a time.  Wired.com is reporting that a man in California, Michael Largen, did exactly that by using a common procedure used by brokerages and other companies to verify accounts.  Brokerages will often test the validity of a brokerage?account to checking?account link by depositing a small amount of money, usually measured in cents, into your checking account (this is usually known as an ACH setup).  These small monies are known...

Old Wives Tales and What a Night!
2008-05-23 09:58:00
Micah must be missing David!David flew back to Ningbo on Wednesday morning and that was when Micah stopped sleeping easily after his feed. We were warned by all experienced mothers that the first 2 weeks might be a breeze when babies sleep a lot and now I am learning that they change their patterns.Last night was a bit stressful when he woke suddenly screaming. I knew it wasn't hunger since I fed him an hour before. He was all red and scrunching up his legs and was obviously in pain. My mom happened to be around and when she felt his head, it was cold and clammy. Mom claims that, that was a sign of a tummy ache. I guess this old wives' tale happens to be true.So with a bit of Chinese medicated oil and lots of cuddling he was better in no time but that wasn't the end of it. All thorough out the night he was waking and fussing making sure that I didn't sleep soundly. In the end I had to prop him up on a big pillow. He definitely sounded much better after that - no more grunting an...

The Science of Fairy Tales
2008-05-22 13:30:00
Kids of any age love to read fairy tales because the storyline never limits the possibility that anything could happen. Curses, spells, and handsome princes reign in worlds beyond the reader?s imagination. But are the most magical moments from some of our favorite stories actually possible? Basic physical principles and recent scientific research suggest that what readers might mistake for fantasies and exaggeration could be rooted in reality. So suspend your imagination for a moment, and look at the following fairy tales as a hard-core scientist might. Rapunzel In the Brothers Grimm story of Rapunzel, a witch holds a beautiful young woman captive in a tower. Rapunzel is blessed with a lovely singing voice and long, long blond hair. One day, her voice enchants a prince passing through a nearby forest. They fall in love, and Rapunzel lets down her hair so that the prince may use it to climb the tower to meet her. This chain of events begs readers to ask a question. Can huma...

Sometimes a politician makes such half truths and outright lies, that someone decides to put together a list of them all.Hillary Clinton is the victim of one such list. Have a peek :)Sen. Hillary Clinton presents the image of a seasoned, ever-disciplinedpolitician whose experience as first lady and a New York senator makesher ready to be commander-in-chief. But a series of misstatements ?exaggerations, half-truths and lies ? made by Clinton over the last 15years have at times undermined her image and called her credibilityinto question.Travis

Pit Baumgartner - Tales of trust (Phazz-A-Delic, 2008)
2008-05-20 12:04:00
Pit Ba...
Tales of the Unread

Panchvi fail and other Bollywood blog tales
2008-05-17 07:41:00
It's no longer about cold wars. The starry world of Bollywood is busy with caustic combats instead. So Aamir Khan writes a cheeky blog entry describing his smelly dog named Shahrukh while Amitabh Bachchan rates Shah Rukh Khan's new reality show as "Panchvi Fail". Bachchan goes on to compare Panchvi Pass's ratings with his own high-ranking KBC show. Salman Khan is brattish as usual, checking on Akshay Kumar's fee before naming his price. The gloves are off in Bollywood. While yesteryear stars Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor and other antagonists kept their mutual dislike private, today the bitching is out in the open. The change has perhaps to do with Bollywood's changing dynamics. Bachchan has reportedly been paid over Rs 100 crore for his blog, so dishing out controversy is part of the domain, quips an industry watcher. Aamir probably felt that Bachchan was stealing the limelight, so he posted a mischievous comment. Two months ago, Aamir had demoted SRK, calling him the ...

Chaucer's Realism in ?The Canterbury Tales?
2008-05-14 16:19:00
Literature is the mirror of its age. Supreme literary artist is one who becomes a mouthpiece and provides a real picture of his age with its minute details. Chaucer is a perfect representative of his age. He is in true sense a social chronicler of England. His poetry reflects the 14th century not in fragment but as a complete whole. Realism of Chaucer in ?The Canterbury Tales? not gives us the impression that whatever has been described is real in the ordinary sense of the word. Realism is not reality; it is a collective term for the devices that give the effect of reality. Chaucer represented life in its nakedness. ?What he has given is a direct transpiration of daily life.? Chaucer's principle object of writing poetry was to portray men and women truthfully without any exaggeration and to present an exact picture of average humanity. He painted life as he saw it, and he saw it with so observant eye that it seems that he was viewing all the events as well as characters throug...
Chaucer's ?The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales?: Art of Characterization
2008-05-13 20:06:00
On the aisle of English poetry, Chaucer flourishes the fantastic colours of his words and paints different characters of his age with minute observation. Indeed, he is a great painter who paints not with colours but with words. Undoubtedly, he has: ?The Seeing Eye, the retentive memory, the judgment to select and the ability to expound.? His keen analysis of the minutest detail of his characters, their dresses, looks and manners enable him to present his characters lifelike and not mere bloodless abstractions. His poetical piece, ?The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales? is a real picture gallery in which thirty portraits are hanging on the wall with all of their details and peculiarities. Rather it is a grand procession with all the life and movement, the colour and sound. Indeed, ?His characters represent English society, morally and socially, in the real and recognizable types?. And still more representative of humanity in general. So, the characters in Chaucer's ?The Prologue?...
Doodle Fail and Other Tales of Excuses
2008-05-12 13:43:00
Alright, I'm throwing in the towel on Doodle Week.   As much as I want to put (digital) pen to (digital) paper on a daily basis, I lack the capacity to create a simple doodle and instead find myself meticulously fabricating, building layer after layer in Photoshop and stressing out over finding the right look. Oops, there goes an hour or two.   What's the big deal about blowing an hour or two? You see, the excuses are strong in this one.   I don't often post about the seedy details of my personal life but since I'm feeling generous and I've finally finished installing the defense system around the perimeter of the secret GorillaSushi underground headquarters, here's what I'm doing recently... Adopting: Yay! Most of the leg work is done on the process and we're left waiting...and buying cool unisex strollers and cribs and stuff. It's kind of like combining pregnancy with the lottery. Trailer Trash Tales Today or Soap On A Rope Surprise!
2008-05-10 02:59:00
It doesn't matter how much money they manage to stumble into or how hard they try...trailer trash will always manage to be trailer trash. What do trailer trash dads wear to their son's court sentencing?Well, at least he wore something with sleeves and a black doo-rag, rather than his usual muscle shirt and print bandana. If Hulk were black or Hispanic, do you think the judge would have tolerated him wearing this in their court??? Just pondering out loud.....The Diva was pleased to see that Brooke went all out and wore something from the 2008 "Street Walker Collection" created by the "Oldest Profession" label to her brother's sentencing.I am still searching for a better photo of the dress....if you have been watching the news coverage today you have no doubt caught sight of the black, shoulder-cut out ummmm... interesting fashion choice. A fashion hint--Brooke, honey---when you have shoulders like a linebacker you REALLY don't want to wear this type of design. Anyway. Like all tr...

Tales of Indian real estate and the common man
2008-05-05 08:04:00
I have been having some very interesting comments to my articles I have previously written on Indian real estate specifically targeting the Pune market. However, the situation seems to be common across most upcoming cities and Metros in India. The comments left actually reflect the reality of present Indian real estate situation. Majority of people have been waiting in the wings in anticipation that the prices will come down since last 2-3 years. In the meantime, prices have more than doubled and it is out of reach of even people earning a fat salary. Here are few selected comments from the article I had written late last year on how I made a fool of myself about prediction of real estate prices:
