Tech talk from MarketWatch
2009-06-24 14:00:00 "Stocks are likely in a new downtrend," says Michael Ashbaugh. In Marketwatch's TheTechnical Indicator, he looks at the S&P's prospects and some drug stocks set to buck the trend."The S&P 500 has violated its major moving averages in the closely tracked 900 area. The recent downturn was convincingly bearish, placing the burden on market bulls to reassert the uptrend."After finding resistance in the 923 area, the S&P sold off sharply, edging back under its 200-day moving average, which currently holds at 900 and now marks resistance. This is bearish price action."Consider the following:Most obviously, the S&P violated its major moving averages. Its 200-day currently holds at 900, while its 50-day rests at 899. The index itself recently closed just under both levels. The market's breadth registered bearish extremes. Specifically, last Monday, down volume surpassed up volume by 14 to 1 on the NYSE, and b...
Chicago gay leaders talk equal marriage strategy
2009-06-24 06:04:00 What's next for the gay rights movement? That's the question some leaders in Chicago's gay community tried to answer Monday night during a panel discussion at the Center on Halsted. About 30 people gathered to hear the thoughts of Andy Thayer, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network; Tania Unzueta of the Chicago Dyke March; and Christopher Clark, a senior staff attorney at Lambda Legal. It's been almost a month since the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8 and the Illinois State Legislature ended its session without voting on the much-anticipated civil unions bill. So what's next? A March on Washington, for one. The National Equality March is set to take place Oct. 10-11 to demand "equal protection in all matters governed by...

A Look Beyond Round 1: MLB Draft Talk
2009-06-06 22:31:00 The MLB draft is quickly approaching, as there are only three full days left for teams and a scouts to finalize their respective draft boards and start putting their plans in motion. I talked a couple posts back about a few guys who very well could end up with the Giants at pick number 6, so in this post we were going to look beyond round one of the draft look at some guys outside of the consensus top-30.OF's Kent Matthes and Marc Krauss: These two are a couple of the biggest college power hitters in the draft and both are coming off of big seasons. Matthes, from Alabama, hit 28 bombs in 2009, to go along with 81 RBI and a .365 average in just 197 at-bats. He was widely thought to be the SEC's most dangerous hitter in '09. I know it's only college, but his HR ratio translates out to nearly a home run every 6 at-bats, which is ridiculously good no matter what level your at. Baseball America has Matthes ranked 63rd in the overall draft pool, so if he were still around when the Gia...

New Release - George Harmonica Smith - Now You Can Talk About Me
2009-06-03 09:01:00 Now You Can Talk About MeAccording to Lars Gandil; There's more than a few California harp players who grew up under the influence of the man who was truly the king of West Coast blues harmonica. To be sure, George "Harmonica" Smith outshone even the great Little Walter when it came to blowing chromatic harp. Sadly under-recorded and under-appreciated, Smith deserves recognition as one of the greats. This release goes a long way in rectifying that situation. Of the fourteen offerings, five are extremely rare 60s reissues, including a real rocker called "Tight Dress" and a rather haughty little number titled "Blowing the Blues." The remainders were produced by harmonica virtuoso Rod Piazza. In the mix are powerhouse blues pieces like "Goin' Down Slow" and the previously unissued "Last Chance." Top these with such unexpected gems as "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "Peg O' My Heart" and what you have is pure harmonica heaven.Track Listing1. Blowing the Blues 2. Yes, Baby 3...

NBA Talk: Magic Don't Care About Buzzer Beater! Fly Over Cavs, 99-89
2009-05-25 21:53:00 "It's all good!" Phelan M. Ebenhack/APBy: Josh DhaniRemember in the first game, Rashard Lewis saved day? It was so underrated toward LeBron's game-winner. Why? Because it's LeBron! But hey, guess what the Magic did yesterday? They beat LeBron and the Cavs, 99-89, to lead the series, 2-1.So really, there probably is no point of having that LeBron shot made because of the looks of it, the Magic are the contenders for the Finals. But guess what? The Cavs could have won this one, easily! The fouls messed them up. For example: Dwight Howard, 24 points—14 on free throws. Rashard Lewis had 18 points in the ten-point victory.Dwight Howard was a monster as he lead the Magic in points with 24.Reinhold Matay/APThis was a real nasty game from start to finish. Thanks to ESPN, this is what they observed: 86 free throws attempted, 58 personal fouls called, two technicals, and a flagrant.Pretty clean, huh? No! Probably the refs finally had an exercise, too. It must have been a long day for them....
NBA Talk: Lakers-Nuggets Game 3
2009-05-24 21:10:00 Kobe Bryant's 41 points lifts Lakers over Nuggets. He's back to be popping bottles! Jack Dempsey/APBy: Josh DhaniIt's no wonder Spike Lee wanted to make the movie, Kobe Doin' Work, because he certainly was last night. Bryant was back to popping bottles when he scored 40 points or more again, that makes it twice in this series! This is certainly an exciting series and this was, no doubt, the best game I have seen in the series.Trevor Ariza was also popping bottles by making important shots. Ariza was bigger than Kobe in the game, saving the Lakers by stealing an inbounds pass to make sure it will be a victory. And when it's victory, it's all good.At the end of the third quarter, J.R. Smith made a surprising three pointer over Sasha Vujacic, and then trashing him. When I saw J.R.'s lips moving, it sounded like he was calling Sasha a mother f***er.Man, J.R., don't be like that!"Trevor, he's very crafty, he's long, he's fast, he's quick and he's a ball hawk," Bryant told ES...

McMillian's bets: Trading talk
2009-05-20 06:00:00 "The intermediate-term positive trends remain largely in effect," says options and trading expert Larry McMillan. In his The Daily Strategist, he offers his market forecast and some trades"The intermediate-term uptrend line around 870-880 in the S&P 500 index remains intact; and as long as this is the case the return to the bear case will be tough to make. "Asset allocation trends continue to behave in a similar fashion, where industrial metals and energy commodities have maintained their respective uptrends and this is positive from an intermediate-term standpoint. "Risk-ave-rse asset classes such as the Yen and Treasuries have moved moderately lower; and this too is an equity market positive development. The relationship between high-yield bonds and Treasuries moved lower today, in a direction favoring risky over risk-averse asset classes. "And sector price action has been moderately positive as well as the energy sector an...

2009-04-22 15:34:00 I keep all my paperclips in a little, weird coffee cup on my desk. I've got both big and small paperclips in there. I never touch the coffee cup, or the paper clips, unless I need a paperclip, in which case I pick up just one. Just one at a time.Yet, despite all those elaborate precautions, every paperclip in that cup is somehow linked to every other paperclip in that cup, sometimes two or three or four combined in one, so that when I want to clip papers together, I've got to go through this elaborate unwinding process to try to get a clip. And I have identified the cause of this problem. Since it's physically impossible for inanimate objects to link themselves together, I have concluded that it is now scientifically proven that (a) paperclips are sentient, and (b) they do not want to be separated. Which now makes me feel guilty that I have, all my life, been separating paperclip families, breaking up paperclip homes, tormenting paperclip moms and dads and kids, and otherwise...
