2008-04-28 14:32:00 This last weekend past was the one year anniversary of the riots in Tallinn, remember the ones where they moved the old Soviet statue and the young male Russian population of Tallinn went bezerk and trashed the joint? Its kind of funny because before the event, there wasnt much happening in Tallinn, I mean big and international, if two old guys got together for a farting contest, it would have been on the front of the newspaper. Ok let me take you back.Id just come back from Finland, tail between my legs and I was checking out Tallinn, I walked along the waters edge to that BFO ugly soviet monument, the one on the way to Pirita with the tall concrete tower and the cemetary behind it. Now I was armed with my trusty Lonely Planet guide where I had just been reading about Narva, the town on the border with Russia which is populated by almost exclusivly ethic Russians. Since EasyJet opened its Stansted–Ülemiste route in 2004, British bachelor parties have been descending upon the Old Town by the airplaneful, crowding the streets with drunken song and leaving pools of vomit in their wake. (Although it’s been on the table for some time now, Ryanair has yet to open routes to Tallinn due to the airport’s high taxes.) While many tourists are drawn to Tallinn to gaze over the medieval red-roofed Old Town, ascend the narrow towers’ spiraling stone steps, wander the warped little streets, and feast on Estonian pancakes, droves of young men come solely to party, slum in strip clubs, and drink like animals.
