Thin Apple Tart & Linguine With Scallops And Roasted Beets
2011-12-06 22:30:00
My grandmother used to say "Sundays are good for apple tart". I have to agree, and add that any day is good for apple tart. But also, days begging for a warm embrace, a soft kiss and a little balm to...
Macau Vanilla Custard Tart
2011-10-24 16:00:00
Complete Disclosure: This post is based on a complimentary newly published book for review. These Macau Vanilla Custard Tart are wonderful treats for tea time. The aroma of vanilla perfumed the whole kitchen when these were baked in the oven. This recipe is from a new culinary and traveloque book by Mary Kate Tate and Nate Tate called Feeding the Dragon. We get a lot of newly published books for review offer but I normally decline the offer. But this book caught my eye because it's a traveloque through China.

Drunken Pumpkin Bourbon Tart With Mascarpone Cream
2010-11-22 06:02:00
Holidays really have a tendency to make us marvel at the time gone by year after year don't they? We shake our heads in denial and wonder how can time fly by this fast. Right now I am grinning as I look at the calendar, thinking that I've done a lot and yippee there is way more to do! There are things I'll happily leave behind when the new year rolls in but overall I am saying out loud "Yes! Let's do this again and often please!" That's worth a good slice of pie and glass of milk.Like most of you celebrating Thanksgiving, the week is going to be a bit of whirlwind at the house. Some of you travel to be with your family, some of you host the traditional dinner, some of you try your best to avoid the madness of it all, stores and crowds. Some of us still have to work and meet deadlines in the middle of it. That's the holidays indeed. This year we decided to break the routine and decided that since Christmas was already planned to happen here with B's family, we could make ourse...
Thin Crust Pear Tart - Tarte Fine Aux Poires For Gluten Free Thanksgiving &
2010-11-15 17:44:00
As I was making this tart for Shauna's Gluten Free Thanksgiving Baking Round Up, I started reflecting on how much I enjoyed being an expat in America around the holidays. I now have an entire second family, a tight group of friends and handful of added occasions to celebrate new traditions and holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, etc... Even Christmas in B's family is light years away from mine. Starting with the food of course.I did not grow up around pumpkin pie, pecan pie or double crusted apple pie but like anyone entering another family, expat or not, there are new traditions I have come to love. Some I have been privileged to make my in-laws discover as they let me bring my own creations to their tables. One of these dishes was my grandmother's Tarte Fine Aux Pommes. She was famous for it. And for good reason. One of the simplest and yet most aromatic and satisfying thin crusted pie I have ever had. She'd start by making a very basic applesauce with heirloom and very ...
Mushroom & Goat?s Cheese Tart (and a little emotional blackmail?)
2010-09-08 14:36:00
I love me some fungus. Yessir, I do. Portabella, Enoki, Field, Swiss Brown/Cremini, Wood Ear, Oyster, Porcini, Shimeji, King Brown, and even the king of umami – Shiitake (even though the idiotic 5yo child in me giggles and says ‘shit-takes’ in my head). Basically, what I’m saying here is that if it grows on a ...
Mirabelle Plums & Almond Frangipane Tart
2010-08-30 10:35:00
I have not been here a week yet and my heart is already replenished and my eyes filled with beautiful memories. I keep catching myself throughout the day thinking "I can?t believe I am here". It?s good to go home and see all my cousins for a joyous occasion for once. I?ve been enjoying my mom?s wonderful cooking, let my nose take me to the cheese box and renewed my love affair with the most fragrant cantaloupes, Saturn peaches, and tiny mirabelles. I?m in complete bliss. On Saturday my grandfather gathered the family for a celebration of his 100th birthday. As he said, never in his life did he imagine that the family that he and my grandmother started at 2 would grow to an intimate (!) group of 50 - children, grandchildren, great grandchildren (and their spouses). That?s us. We as a whole function as a giant tribe composed of many smaller clans. It?s joyous. It?s loud. It?s everywhere and all at once. It?s tensed and climatic. It?s pretty darn awesome when I get to be there (and so g...

Strawberry Shortcake Tart

This is quite simple but makes a relatively impressive-looking summer pud - a rich biscuit base (made here from a mix of digestives and shortbread), a creamy filling and all topped with fresh strawberries.

Summer break has disappeared rather quickly! It's hard to believe that Soeren will be back at school next week after 8 weeks - as a 2nd grader! Things were to be a bit different this year, I know. Blueberry Ricotta Tart
2009-07-14 13:30:00
At long last, here’s the recipe for my entry for the Brooklyn Beer Experiment. When I decided to enter, I came up with a shortlist of things to make. My first thought was Beeramisu using a coffee porter (specifically, Sixpoint’s Gorilla Warfare, which is SO GOOD) instead of Marsala + espresso, but, unfortunately, I was too late, as the organizers of the event informed me that someone else had
It was a tactical Pop Tart (Cinnamon Flavored -Tactical, to be precise.)
2009-05-21 15:20:00
What tactical gear do you wear for your job? For me (today) it's a tactical blue-striped polo shirt, and tactical black pants with a tactical bit of Pop Tart frosting tactically smeared onto the leg...Oh, who am I kidding? My job doesn't require tactical gear. I almost never have to dodge bullets, rappel down walls, sneak up on bad guys, engage in a heated armed standoff, or drive 100 miles per hour down the road while trying to catch a fleeing, monkey-driven van full of bank robbers. (That last reference courtesy of Dane Cook.)And sometimes I envy the guys and gals whose jobs do require those things -- people who get to shop at LA Police Gear and not look ridiculous doing so. I get jealous of people who can wear tactical pants, who carry Versipacks that have a special holster for their weapons, who need specialized incandescent flashlights and tactical Under Armour. I get way jealous of how cool their jobs must be: get up, order a bunch of stuff off of LA Police Gear, then ...
St. Andr Dessert Tart
2009-03-30 06:00:00
A most delicious and decadent tartIn the world of cheeses there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of richness. That cheese is St. Andr. Hailing from France (mais, oui) it is a triple crme cheese with a soft rind and a butterfat content of 70% - rich, indeed.St. Andr triple crme cheese - just starting to soften at the top, if left at room temperature for 20 minutes it will become soft and very spreadable. It pairs perfectly with several light beers and is perfect for spreading on a French baguette. I decided to do something a bit more decadent and designed this dessert tart using this truly luxurious cheese. The crust is very tender and delicate and the filling was perfectly done - not too set, just right. I may make this again with cream cheese replacing the ricotta. Not that it's not divine as-is, but the ricotta makes the texture a bit more grainy than I'd like. I think cream cheese or mascarpone would do very well here.Find out more about St. Andr...
Cranberry, Pear, and Almond Frangipane Tart
2009-01-20 12:26:00
So it’s January and I’m still posting my Thanksgiving recipes…..Anyhow, this one was actually a last minute addition to the Thanksgiving menu. There was a total of 15 of us and I realized that one apple pie and one pumpkin cheesecake would be just enough for everyone, and, of course, just you don’t want just barely enough of anything you’re serving – you want to make sure there’s plenty to go
Tuesdays with Dorie: French Pear Tart
2009-01-06 07:56:00
Happy New Year and happy baking in 2009! TWD starts its 2 nd year and the first recipe in 2009 on page 368-369 from Baking: From my home to yours: French Pear Tart has been chosen by the author herself Dorie Greenspan I am not very happy with my result: First I prebaked the tart shell a bit too long and than I fanned my pears lengthwise. Buttermilk Pear Tart
2008-10-25 21:14:00
This is one of those random recipes in which I put in no effort and expected nothing in return.I am sure you?re familiar with this type of baking. For example, you have a cup of buttermilk about to expire, 2 pears that need to be eaten ASAP, one stick of butter, and you?re dying to bake something. So, you start ?googling? your ingredients hoping to strike gold with a recipe.I found a buttermilk cake/tart over at 101 Cookbooks. (I really love this site. I love the sides and main dishes from Heidi. She?s amazing!) And I actually had all the necessary ingredients (except raspberries which were replaced by the pears) to bake the tart.I mixed the ingredients, poured batter into the pan, and threw the pears on top. It was only until the tart/cake came out of the oven and I had a taste; did I start to feel guilty. The cake was unbelievably delicious. Which made me feel embarrassed for just throwing the pears on top. I should have fanned them out and added the extra touches that a grea...
Destination New York City: Sweet-N-Tart
2008-10-08 23:53:00
Sweet-N-Tart is located at 136-11 38th Avenue, Flushing, NY. They also have a location at 20 Mott Street in the Manhattan Chinatown area. This trendy looking restaurant take traditional Asian dishes and give it a modern twist. Normally, it is the place I go to for delicious congee and various fun appetizers. I noticed that their menu has grown and is now filled with many pictures of pretty looking, decorative dishes. They upgraded their beverage menus to include various fancy teas (blooming teas too), fresh juices, milkshakes, and smoothies. They also offer mock cocktails featuring exotic tropical fruits. Most Asian restaurants provide you with a cup of tea or glass of water as the default beverage when you are seated at your table. Since they now offer a more extensive line of teas, if you want to drink hot tea, it must be ordered from the menu. No more free tea.The pictures in the menu are very captivating and every dish looks fun and amazing. Some of the dishes sounded interestin...
Gypsy Tart
2008-07-14 00:25:00
Personally I am not a fan of the Gypsy Tart, but my other half is. Wikipedia has the following to say: A gypsy tart is a type of pie made with evaporated milk, muscovado sugar (though some varieties include light brown sugar), and pie crust. It originates from East Kent, Isle of Sheppey in England. The tart is extremely sweet and is, for many people, associated with school dinners. Although most will know the version of gypsy tart made with evaporated milk, it can also be made with condensed milk in place of evaporated milk. This makes a firmer and even sweeter tart, with a darker colour. This is an example of the nice food at The George Inn at Trottiscliffe.

Mexican inspired chicken soup and a tart for dessert!
2008-06-03 15:29:00
Doesn't that look amazing? All crispy and crunchy with fresh blackberries scattered around!Well the school year is almost over and I have absolutely no idea where the time has gone. As of Friday my days are no longer my own. For the rest of this week they are on a half day schedule so I am suppose to pick them up at noon (wonder what happens if I don't???). I guess this is their subtle way of easing us into the summer. Only half days this week and nothing at all next week and for the next 10 weeks. I guess it's better than going cold turkey!!! I have my oldest daughter in for a couple of weeks of day camp but the youngest one will be with me ALL SUMMER long...10 whole weeks...2 and 1/2 months...OMG!!!Anyway yesterday morning I was looking in my fridge trying to decide what was for dinner and about the only thing that wasn't a condiment was a chicken carcass from roast chicken the week before. I pulled the remaining meat of the bones and threw it in a pot of water. I add...

T is for Tomato and Pancetta Tart
2008-05-09 18:35:00
This is a tale of two tarts. Up until now all our tomato recipes have been smooth, the unsettling texture of the tomato removed to cause less anxiety to Freddie...But for our final tomato recipes I decided to flirt with danger and allow the tomato to flash a little flesh. The creation above is a Tomato and Pancetta Tart. Freddie came back from school saying he was really hungry. In fact he looked at the tart with the thin slices of tomato and only saw the pancetta. There is a Latin saying, "Rabidus fame, ceu canis" as hungry as a dog. He attacked the tart like a puppy."So you do like tomatoes then?""No" muttered Freddie, ferociously biting into the tart."Well that's what you're eating."He stopped mid-bite and looked down. With slightly less energy he carried on eating."Do you want another slice?""No thanks. I liked it but its not good enough to have seconds." So I offered him the other tart - tart number two which we adapted from this recipe, adding sliced courgettes. Out of respect...

French Lemon Cream Tart
2008-04-08 23:30:00
Click here for the english version! Tuesdays with Dorie - eine schöne Idee, die einen dazu diszipliniert, regelmäßig aus einem bestimmten Backbuch zu backen. In diesem Fall "Baking From My Home To Yours" von Dorie Greenspan. Copyright by foolforfood, 2007. Dieser Blog-Feed ist fuer den privaten Gebrauch. Leftover Sausage and the Sausage Sandwich Tart
2008-04-07 18:20:00
*Disclaimer: These photos are really bad. My poor old camera is not doing so well, I guess, but a new one is absolutely out of the budget for now. Hey, it still looks like food, right?*My mother brought over the mammoth of all sausages - a full 3 1/2 pounds from her favorite butcher. I have no idea why she thought we needed that much, but she was thrilled that they still use real butcher paper and tape, and so, I humored her and told her how fabulous I thought it was. In truth, I still get meat from my own butcher in real butcher paper, but I let mom have her moment. I cooked all of it at once, knowing we would never eat it all in one sitting, and set aside what we didn't eat with homemade waffles and thought on what else I'd like to make. I had a bit of puff pastry leftover and some lovely red and green peppers and a very nice yellow onion. I really enjoy a good sausage sandwich and decided a tart based on that would be pretty darn good. I was right.I pressed the pastry into a 10...
TWD - The Most Extraordinary (Lip-Smacking) French Lemon Crean Tart
2008-04-07 16:52:00
The best thing about joining up with the kind, funny, supportive and variously talented ladies of the Tuesdays with Dorie blogger's baking group, has been the confidence that I have gained in my baking skills. From tackling brioche for the first time, to baking my first apple pie-cake, I am continuously stretching the limits of my comfort zone in the kitchen, and I love it! Not every recipe has turned out picture perfect and there have even been a few that I didn't care for, per se; but each recipe that I've made from Dorie Greenspan's beautiful ode to home baking has been a worthy challenge and a gratifying lesson in the art of dessert making.

Simple Sunday Dinners: Bacon and Goat Cheese Free-Form Tart

As soon as I saw this recipe over at Leite's Culinaria, I was sold. I've been wanting to try my hand at a simple free-form tart for a while now, and although I initially had a sweet version in mind, I couldn't resist the holy trinity of bacon, goat's cheese and caramelized onions.

S is for Samphire and Crab Tart
2008-03-18 06:33:00
?half-way downlies one that gathers samphire, dreadful trade!?(King Lear)Hundreds of years ago samphire gatherers risked their lives to pick strands of the rarer rock samphire. At times, children were tied with rope and dangled over the cliff edge. This is the ?dreadful trade? that Shakespeare refers to in King Lear. On Monday morning, with a day off work, I went to find marsh samphire. I wasn't hanging from the edge of a cliff but the route was almost as perilous. And that is because on Monday morning the pavements of West London are covered in unwanted furniture. In the half mile walk between home and the fishmongers I had to climb round enough furniture and fittings to furnish a small mansion. Two velour sofas, three dining chairs, a kitchen table, four rolled up carpets, a couple of standard lamps and a bedside table later I arrived at the fishmongers and bought my samphire which came from Mexico. Back through the forest of dumped furniture, which was now decorated by dog dirt,...

Pi Day: Tomato and gruyère tart
2008-03-15 02:58:00
My maths teachers would be proud...and confused.Let's face it, I was not known for my stellar work with numbers...English, history, science, geography, French--pretty much anything other that maths and phys. ed and the machine-assisted sewing part of Home Ec, I happily claimed a small part of. Anything and everything beyond BEDMAS made my head hurt...a lot. Now, ironically, one of the things I've developed a reputation for (at least amongst vendors who works with me) is my somewhat quick and usually annoyingly airtight ability to cut through smarmy numbers...yeah, I'm a favourite in some circles...Maybe there is a mathy in me screaming to get out. I'm sure it has to do with all my baking and cooking...yet another reason why people should bake more chocolate cakes and make more ice cream...So when Alanna of Kitchen Parade announced a foodish twist to Pi Day (look at my posting date (omitting the year), if you don't get it), I planned to seize this opportunity to continue making ...
