The Chicago Barn Dance Company brings a taste of the country to the big cit
2009-10-07 01:16:00
Time to fire up this hootenanny! The Chicago Barn Dance Company meets every Monday night, along with other days throughout the week, to share the best moves the country has to offer. Surprisingly, most of the members are from the city and surrounding areas. I just assumed most of them came from the Appalachians and got lost, prompting them to form an underground club of partner swapping madness. But that wasn't the case. The Chicago Barn Dance Company is made up of regular folks like you and I, people who enjoy getting down to some wonderful live folk music. Barn Dancing incorporates many of the traditional varieties of dance, including square dancing, where couples form squares and switch partners. There's also...

Lemon Chamomile Pots De Creme & A Taste Of Yellow
2009-09-17 18:57:00
Yesterday morning, I stood in the middle of the kitchen trying to find something, anything yellow that I could bake with. I thought I was finally ahead of the game for a change with recipes, writing, pictures, yet I had this nagging feeling that I was forgetting something. I was mumbling "yellow, yellow, something yellow" pacing the kitchen, opening the fridge, the pantry. Bill looked at me, banana in hand and exclaimed "That's yellow!". Read this post and you will understand why I immediately protested: "Non pas encore des bananes. Y'en a marre des bananes!" (no, no more bananas. Enough with the bananas!) Lemons would be nice. Lemon Pots de Creme would even be nicer. An hour later a baker friend stopped by with a small case of lemons. "Fell off the truck!" he said with a wink. I know it meant they had overstocked and they knew I'd find good use for them. "Oh yes! Yellow overstock! Please find a spot on my countertop" I thought while wringing my hands scheming. I did not have muc...

That strategy was designed to cajole voters into believing that former President George W. Bush wasn't blowing away the recession fast enough. Learning about wine: taste and see
2009-07-22 18:00:00
What is the best way to learn more about wine? This is a question that I get asked quite often, and my answer is always the same: Taste more wine. Experience is the best teacher when it comes to expanding your wine knowledge, but there is a difference between tasting wine and drinking it. We drink wine for pleasure; we taste wine to learn more about it. Drinking is easy enough: Pick up the glass, swallow and repeat. Our attention is more on the social setting and not necessarily on the wine itself. Perhaps we pause to comment on the flavor, but we quickly return to enjoying ourselves....

How to make smart choices at the Taste of Chicago
2009-07-03 17:02:00
The time has come when the annual Taste of Chicago has taken over our city.  I know that majority of the food is not on my healthy list, however I find that I have to go at least once each year.  Here are a few tips I can give you to help you stay focused as you wind your way from one end of Columbus to the other:1)  If you feel you have no self control (and by no means is this a jab, we all have these moments) or do not want to overeat,  buy a smaller amount of tickets.  When you've used up your tickets see if you're still hungry.  You may decide that you have had enough...

Taste of Chicago '07 vendor sued on the festival's opening day
2009-06-26 23:14:00
So the Taste of Chicago '09 opens today, if you haven't already checked out all the pre-event coverage. As I type this from the courthouse pressroom (and I'm starving, by the way), my very own sister is out there, just a few miles away, partaking in the summer festivities and sweating it out in long lines for massive turkey legs approximately the size of her head.Mmmm-mm-mmm. It beats work on a Friday afternoon, I gotta say.But that's assuming the food doesn't make you sick. Which, according to Karen Rudolph, is not a safe assumption at all. ...
Taste of Chicago 2009 gets underway
2009-06-26 16:57:00
The Taste of Chicago is back. It starts today at 11 a.m. in Grant Park. As one of the country's largest food festivals, Chicagoans and tourists alike look forward to sampling some of the best cuisine the city has to offer, but this year the Taste is slimming down. According to WGN Radio, there will only be 54 food vendors this year compared to last year's 63. Festival organizers say vendor participation decreased in an effort to better control city traffic and was not related to the economy. Per Chicagoist.com, all 54 food vendors are required by the city to "serve a minimum of two 'taste-of" portions,'" as part of the festival's emphasis on healthy eating. Some vendors will even...
Taste of Chicago: Opening Day
2009-06-26 16:41:00
In a little over an hour Taste of Chicago will get underway. This homage to our love of food begins at 10:45 this morning with an opening ceremony, and a ring of the dinner bell will open the festivities. This festival is so massive that it can be a bit overwhelming. As far as food goes, Hungry Z's got you covered with "Taste This, Not That." He would know - last year he stopped at 41 of the 65 booths - in one day! But there's a lot more to the taste than the food. There are activities for kids, a market, sports, and of course, live music galore. Check here every morning for the day's schedule of activities and concerts.Friday,...
Good eats? Taste's wackiest treats
2009-06-25 21:42:00
I haven't been to the Taste of Chicago since I was a child when I didn't dare indulge in anything but hot dogs and lemonade. The Taste opens tomorrow, and I plan on going back this year, but it won't be for the basics. Taking the time to compile a personal check list of bizarre, oddball foodstuffs was difficult, but may prove invaluable over the next few days. Here's to trying something new and diving off the deep end -- in some cases, quite literally. 5. Mango-cumin dusted fries -- VermilionThe office is abuzz over Vermilion's specialty fries, and for good reason. Mangos are tasty, yes? And french fries: also tasty. May there be no competition between fresh fruit and...

The Gnocchi Taste Test
2009-05-15 22:42:00
It has been a while since I have reported on a test-kitchen scenario on this blog. Heck, I think the only time I really remember doing that here was back when I was working on different varieties of butternut squash soup. But in my continued research as part of writing my cookbook, I came across in my various notes and cookbooks a collection of different ways to make gnocchi. I was astonished. I really thought this was one of those recipes where the culinary jury had handed in its verdict long ago: the potatoes are boiled and you then proceed with making gnocchi. But much to my surprise, I found several sources, all of which I consider to be very trustworthy, that had different methods of cooking the potatoes. Some said to boil, some said to steam and some said to oven-roast them. But what I found most interesting about these differences was the one thing they all had in common - they ALL said, no matter which cooking method they advocated, to cook the potatoes whole, with t...

First Flavor Memorable Marketing: Taste Test Tryvertising
2009-04-29 12:00:00
An innovative marketing company is finally recognizing the power of taste in brand marketing and is helping food producers sell their products using more than just visual appeal. While historically, food and drink brands have marketed their products through sample packages distributed by mail or during taste test sessions at local grocery stores; First Flavor uses an approach that allows potential consumers to taste their clients' products that is less costly, more convenient, and rather innovative.

It's a MiniBest! Here's a thought I had, the first of many, and a thought that just struck me as both sort of sad/sort of odd, just tonight:People only maked shaped cookies for special occasions.Weird, huh? We make shaped cookies for Christmas, and for Easter, and for Halloween, and maybe, if you're really into them, other occasions, like, I suppose, Arbor Day or Lenin's Birthday or something. But everyday cookies aren't shaped like anything but cookies. Why is that, I wonder? Is it only worth the extra effort to shape the cookies like something else if it's for a special occasion? Would people think it was weird if I baked shaped cookies for just a "Tuesday?"I bet they would. I bet if I went right now and baked cookies, nobody would say anything about it (other than Sweetie, who would likely say "I thought you said you were coming to bed. Why are you making cookies at 10 p.m.?")(What's oddly frightening is that she might not ask that last part. She might just figure tha...
