How to Become an ESL Teacher ? Guide to Teaching English Abroad
2011-12-22 18:45:00 I sat at the front of the classroom with my half-eaten lunch as 28 Japanese 7-year-olds hovered around me peppering me with questions: ”How tall are you? Why are your eyes brown? What’s the best place in America?” Their eyes wide with genuine curiosity and interest, I answered questions in my broken Japanese and signed autographs as they ...How to Become an ESL Teacher – Guide to Teaching English Abroad is a post from the Money Crashers personal finance blog.

Meet Nina - Volunteer Teacher Uganda
2011-11-02 03:25:00 Seeing Uganda through a child's eyesVolunteer teacher Nina likes to draw cartoons as an education tool in her classes. "It attracts the students, and they often try to copy what I have drawn, and frequently actually do a better job of it!" she says. The impact, Nina told us, is that it helps to develop the creative and observational skills of the student which can certainly benefit the child's future. The paintbrushes are back in their pots and the winning pictures are ready for passage to Hong Kong. The first stage of the Hands of Action children?s art project is complete.Last week more than 600 children from the Bududa district in eastern Uganda composed pictures of life in their country for the project, an initiative of the Hong Kong-based Ridealist in cooperation with Hands of Action Uganda. The best pictures will be sent to Hong Kong for one or more exhibitions and later sold internationally in an online auction. Will Court Decision Topple A Top Sathya Sai Teacher? Male Sexual Abuse Case
2011-07-22 11:36:00 STOP PRESS! Breaking NEWS ...... This morning, Friday, I received important news, the details of which are being wrapped up in an Indian High Court today. Until I access the notes, I shall wait and examine the details, and check on what those on the spot have to report. Witnesses to the court proceedings made such comments as: "Our side had only three 'suits' (ed. i.e., lawyers or solicitors). The Sathya Sai lot had no fewer than thirteen!! Our three advocates ran rings around them. The judge removed the gag". One of the family members I spoke to, who along with other family, have long suffered the effects of Sai betrayal, was so overjoyed at the routing of a formidable accomplice of Sathya Sai Baba that he told me: "I was so happy that I leapt into my swimming pool forgetting that I had my Sat(ellite)Phone in my pocket. I have to get a new one" .... Prison Sentence - More Sentences To Come? I can attest that there is growing determination among those who have t...
Movie Review - Bad Teacher (*** out of 5)
2011-06-29 04:17:00 BAD TEACHER. 92 mins. R. Directed by Jake Kasdan. Written by Gene Stupnitsky & Lee Eisenberg.Call it the summer of the R-rated comedy. Hot on the heels of Bridesmaids and The Hangover Part II comes Bad Teacher, an agreeably crude and entertaining time waster with a few solid laughs up its sleeve. The movie is populated with a series of unlikeable characters, each more stupid and detestable than the next, but that ends up being a good thing. Though it's not a sequel to 2003's Bad Santa, the two films do share a kindred spirit in that both feature drunken, profane adult authority figures mixing it up inappropriately with kids. If Bad Teacher falls a bit short of Santa's mark,...
Chicago teacher 'professional development' days stumps CEO Brizar
2011-06-28 20:20:00 Sorry, but CTA buses and trains won't be running tomorrow. You'll have to fend for yourself because bus drivers and train operators will spend the day in "professional development," learning how to run equipment they are supposed to know how to run already. If that's not the most preposterous thing you've ever heard, (it's not true) then think about Chicago Public Schools actually doing much the same thing: Closing the classrooms to students because teachers and staff are engaged in "professional development" days. The issue came to light when new school CEO Jean-Claude Brizard recently said: "We have 193 days of schools open, but only 170 days that kids can attend school. I'm not sure what happens in those 23...
Movie Review - Bad Teacher
2011-06-28 16:24:00 Timberlake and Diazby David SchusterRemember the movie "Bad Santa" with Billy Bob Thornton? That movie was hilarious and good. "Bad Teacher" on the other hand is neither. In fact it was just the opposite. Incredibly non funny and plain junk. "Bad Teacher" stars Cameron Diaz who still has that kick ass hot body but to be honest she's beginning to look a little weathered in the face. Diaz plays a mopey almost nasty teacher who hates her profession and is just looking for a rich guy to take her away. Of course the producers and director dress her in everything possible tight and that alone accounts for the final rating (grade) on this movie. Otherwise it's a complete waste of time. Justin Timberlake...
End K-12 public school teacher tenure (UPDATE)
2011-06-13 23:43:00 UPDATE: Quinn signs education reform law. Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn is expected to sign today what's called "sweeping" education reform, a step in the right direction in several regards: Longer school days and a provision allowing school to place competence over length of service in the firing and recall of teachers. Competent teachers will be able to secure tenure in three years after qualifying by meeting tougher qualifications. But here's a question: Why any tenure at all?...
A Message from CPS teacher, Nate: Save my classroom
2011-05-20 01:55:00 My name is Nate, and I'm a teacher in a Chicago Public School. I love my job. No matter how long or hard I have to work, it's always worth it to see my students learn and grow. But our massive pension debt -- more than $100 billion and rising -- is sucking money away from Illinois schools and other important programs for Illinoisans, depriving them of the funding they need to succeed. Take Seguin Services, a program for people with developmental disabilities that relies on the state for 80 percent of its funding. Seguin's future is being threatened because its funding is being crowded out by pension debt. We need real reform, ASAP. In just a few days, the...
Union Thug Teacher Hopes Opponents Get Roughed Up by Teamsters
2011-05-10 18:30:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Like any union thug, when confronted by someone that simply won't bend to union will, why, the first thing they resort to is violence -- or at least threats of same -- and this union thug in Washington D.C. is no different than any other. Caught at a protest arranged by unions to attack school choice, the cameras of some Freedom Works folks found a typical unionista that hoped the Teamsters would "kick the asses" of those that dare oppose the unions. She wished violence to descend upon anyone that wants kids to have a better education. Naturally, this union creep also resorted to foul language. Typical union thug....

People: Teacher Solves @MayorEmanuel Mystery
2011-03-01 06:09:00 Even as the notoriety and mystery grew, only a handful of folks were able to figure out who the hilarious and profane Twitterer known as @MayorEmanuel really was before he revealed himself recently as a Chicago professor and punk zine publisher (The Man Behind @MayorEmanuel). One of the few to crack the code was Seth Lavin (pictured, I think), currently a second-year Chicago 5th grade teacher who figured out @MayorEmanuel's real identity during a recent blizzard using nothing more than his crazy brainpower and tricky social media skills you and I probably lack. Great news, right? Except he's a TFA corps member, former Bain consultant, went to Georgetown ('07) and is a new dad at 25. For all I know, he...

High school English teacher suspended over blog
2011-02-24 14:27:00 She wrote that her students were "rude, disengaged, lazy whiners. They curse, discuss drugs, talk back, argue for grades, complain about everything, fancy themselves entitled to whatever they desire and are just generally annoying."She's probably right (let's be honest). And, she's entitled to voice her opinion. But, uh, she might want to consider a career change. Just saying. This reminds me of my high school English teacher - I'll call her Mrs. Conner - who, with holes in her pantyhose and a fondness for carrot cake from the school cafeteria, would plop on her desk in front of our honors English class and say things such as:- The Belleville (New Jersey) school system 'sucks' (how articulate for an English teacher)- I...

Blogs: Teacher Caught Whining Re Whiny Kids

Her name's Natalie Munroe and she described some of her kids as lazy whiners, among other things -- without naming names. But the kids figured it out, she's been suspended, and her case has aroused both derision and praise. Maybe teachers should be banned from using social media altogether? Or limited to happy talk? Child Molesting Teacher Can't Be Fired Thanks to Union
2010-12-28 19:30:00 -By Warner Todd Huston In 1997 a Brooklyn teacher was accused of attempting to molest a sixth-grade girl at PS 138. As it happened, he admitted the behavior, but no criminal charges were filed when all was said and done. Still one would think the fact that he inappropriately fondled a teen should be enough to get him fired from his teaching position. But then again, in New York you can't even fire a child molester if he happens to be a teachers union member. Thanks to the fact that it is nearly impossible to fire a teacher, this lowlife has been drawing his almost $100,000-a-year salary to do nothing. You heard that right, to do nothing....

Review "A Piano Teacher": A heartfelt lesson on facing the music
2010-11-09 22:26:00 "What's so wonderful about honesty? Mama said, 'don't be 100% honest.'" A retired widow shares her cookies and recollections. Next Theatre presents the Midwest premiere of The Piano Teacher. Mrs. K self-identifies as being effortlessly good at many small things. Musically inclined but not quite the concert pianist, Mrs. K starts out as a piano tuner. Later, she teaches piano from her home. Over the course of thirty years, she instructs hundreds of children. Out of loneliness, Mrs. K starts calling up her former pupils to reminisce. The reconnection jars memories that she forgot she had wanted to forget. While she was practicing scales in the living room, Mr. K was providing life lessons in the kitchen. The musical appreciation class was overshadowed by Genocide 101. The K homeschooling did have a profound impact on its students. It just wasn't the recital variety. The Piano Teacher dramatizes the long lasting effects of being traumatized as a child.

Wrestling with teacher unions
2010-08-30 02:43:00 Unions are reasonably good at protecting workers whose jobs involve the daily risk of having molten steel dropped on them or getting arm chewed off in a machine. However, the value of a union for government workers, especially professionals like teachers, is a little harder to define. This year's strike-season seems to have passed without any major labor disruptions impacting DuPage school districts, but that outcome can never be taken for granted. The presence of collective bargaining agreements add an administrative burden that limit each school's options in adapting to student needs. Districts do not have any room to decide whether to enter into a contract. Illinois law requires them to negotiate a union contract with their teachers. But do...
How Teachers Unions Abuse Non-Union Teacher Paychecks

Check out this new Independent Teachers video about what happens when a non-union school employee who is forced to opt out of paying union fees every year misses the deadline because of family medical emergencies: Due to family medical hardships, non-union Pueblo school employee Becky Robertson missed an annual deadline to opt out of union fee paycheck deductions. The union rejected her appeal. Though she had chosen not to be a union member, Becky ended up paying the union hundreds of dollars that could have been used for medical bills and other expenses. Why do Colorado laws allow this type of abuse to continue?...

About the Left's New Palin-Confronting 'Teacher,' Turns Out
2010-08-10 06:06:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Earlier today the left sent up cheers for an Alaska "teacher" that is seen on video attacking Governor Palin as "the worst Governor ever" as the sign she was putting up read. When Gov. Palin interacted with her, the woman told Palin she was a "teacher." Looks like the woman, Kathleen Gustafson, is a liar. As we find on GatewayPundit, she isn't a teacher but a theater tech. Even more absurdly, the woman belongs to a band that features drag queens as its attraction! Another blogger whose blog is named Mac'sMind did some digging and the only Kathleen Gustafson he could find connected to the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District works in the theater dept. as...
PE Teacher in Stevenson School District Earned a Salary of $191,124
2010-08-09 03:19:00 William Mitz, a PE teacher from the Stevenson High School School district retired in June of this year. His final year salary was $191,124. That's right, close to $200,000 for a PE teacher. Unions complain all the time about salary. But this is what happens when the unions have too much power. You get in a situation where a PE teacher is paid close to $200,000. For more information on this travesty read the following article by Bill Zettler, an expert in public employee compensation: $1 Million Payout to Two Teachers Proves Schools Should Pay for Pensions, Not the State But, tax payers don't stop paying Mitz after he retires. Now that he is retired, we are paying him a monthly pension of $9,468, plus an annual Cost of Living increase. Zettler says it best: "Teachers who make $191,000/yr and retire with a pension of $113,000 after working 31 nine-month years, needs to become a thing of the past. While Illinois taxpayers struggle to make ends meet teachers' work in a privilege...
CMSA: Pregnant Charter Teacher Fired For Organizing
2010-08-06 18:32:00 Remember how in June we found out that the teachers at CMSA (Chicago Math and Science Academy) charter school had organized? Well the latest on that front is that the school allegedly fired one of the leaders of the organizing effort. But that's not all, according to this IFT press release:"The teacher, Rhonda Hartwell [no, that's not her pictured], was eight months pregnant at the time of her firing and was forced to move up her scheduled delivery to ensure it occurred before her health insurance was cut off. Meanwhile, attorneys for the charter school claim its teachers are private employees subject to the National Labor Relations Act."No news yet from the management side, but I'm hoping that there's another...

What is the Teacher Retirement System?
2010-06-25 16:15:00 We all sense that something is wrong with the state of finances in Illinois. To begin to make any kind sense of all of this we need to know who are some of the major players in this debacle. If you want to begin to tackle the problems, you have to educate yourself on the major components of the problem. One of the biggest is the monstrosity called the Teacher Retirement System. The Teacher Retirement System (TRS) in the state of Illinois is a public pension benefit plan that provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits for Illinois public school teachers (except for Chicago), administrators, and personnel.Teachers and Education administrators in Illinois do not utilize social security, instead they count on the...
Here Comes The New Teacher Eval System
2010-06-16 17:03:00 Forget performance pay and all the other gimmicks out there. No one can afford any of that stuff, anyway. Instead, how about re-inventing the regular old teacher evaluation process into something more meaningful -- and rigorous. That's the thinking behind the ETP program being piloted over the past two years and discussed in several news reports as being a better, fairer -- and tougher -- way to evaluate teachers (CPS Pilot Program Could Hold Answers to Overhauling Teacher Evaluation WBEZ, Chart: Comparing existing and new teacher grading systems Tribune, Teacher evaluation program shows promising results Catalyst). But what's it been like in real life for the teachers at the 44 schools in the pilot, going from the old checklist to...
