Alex Feather Akimov: Now Teaching At Guitar Master Class
2012-01-29 01:47:00
Alex Feather Akimov teaches guitar on Guitar Master Class Alex is a session musician - guitarist, composer and producer from Los Angeles, USA with a rich experience both from studios and touring. Born in 1986, he was just an 11 year boy when he started playing his first chords on his mother's old guitar, inspired by his first idols - The Beatles. Educated from Moscow College of Music and graduated from LAMA (Los Angeles Music Academy) learning jazz and classical guitar, he is now the master of fusion style. He usually gets his ideas from something he would hear as a good beat, here and there, but people who support him like family and fans inspire him the most. Alex is always searching for More and New in all aspects of his music. His favorite guitarist is Greg Howe whom he learned from on LAMA. The two of them recorded together an instrumental song called ?Search?. Among other songs on his albums, he recorded a single track with Frank Gambale called ?Beautiful Lani? which is f...

How to Become an ESL Teacher ? Guide to Teaching English Abroad

I sat at the front of the classroom with my half-eaten lunch as 28 Japanese 7-year-olds hovered around me peppering me with questions: ”How tall are you? Why are your eyes brown? What’s the best place in America?” Their eyes wide with genuine curiosity and interest, I answered questions in my broken Japanese and signed autographs as they ...How to Become an ESL Teacher – Guide to Teaching English Abroad is a post from the Money Crashers personal finance blog.

How Teaching is Similar to Directing
2011-08-14 19:49:00
The Schoolmaster by Adriaen van Ostade It has been one of my life-long dreams to become a movie director, seconded by a career in writing. In terms of directing I had my first taste when I made a short film alongside a friend of mine and the experience was wonderful and rewarding. At the same time, I got to sense some of the difficulties that may come with this line of work. Anyhow, I ended embarking upon a teaching career. In fact, there are a few similarities between the two professions. The idea came to me when I realized that apart from every teacher having their own style, quirks and trademarks, the same lesson plan can have completely different outcomes, the same way two directors with identical scripts will not produce identical movies. One of the decisions film-makers must make is the pace of their work. Does or should the movie follow a deliberately slow or an action-packed fast pace? Is the film able to consistently keep the interest of the viewer? Pacing is the rhy...

Teaching: Scripted Curricula Cripple Teachers
2010-11-08 17:45:00
During Miss Mimi's rookie year, her school used a scripted reading program and a games-based math program.  In her second year of teaching, it adopted- a balanced literacy approach to reading and writing, began a brand new word study program and implemented a totally new math curriculum, in addition to re-writing their science and social studies lessons.  In her third yea-r, they changed word study programs, as the science and social studies scope and sequence went through another overhaul.  In her fourth year, the school adopted  a third word study program, and instituted a battery of new tests.  This constant flux, it is no exaggeration to say, has "crippled teachers."   As we move into a new era of austerity, I also wonder how much it cost to sell, plan, implement, and evaluate all of those...
CRITICAL-MINDED
2010-10-19 17:07:00
Teacher and education expert, Zoe Burgess, believes in critical thinking. So much so that she's written about how to successfully integrate it into the classroom. She starts of by defining critical thinking as "the ability to understand and apply the abstract, the ability to infer and to meaningfully investigate." She then goes on to cite specific critical thinking scenarios and methods that gauge how well students may apply this real-world skill. Check out her entire piece right here.

I saw some students quietly doing the work, others doing nothing but talking, drawing or just sitting. I am hoping that...

As the Mom of teenagers I read this news article and my eyebrows shot up;A Georgia woman whose 15-year-old daughter appeared on an episode of Tyra Banks' talk show featuring teen sex addicts is suing the TV host for $3 million. In a lawsuit filed Oct. 8 in federal court in Atlanta, Beverly McClendon says her daughter appeared on the former model's talk show without McClendon's permission.Banks, Warner Bros. Entertainment and the producers of the show are named as defendants.A spokesman for Warner Bros. Television Group said Sunday that the company has no comment. The lawsuit claims violation of privacy and negligence. It asks for $3 million in damages and seeks to keep the episode from ever being aired again.McClendon says her daughter suffered damages because the 2009 show "was undoubtedly watched by sexual deviants, perverts and pedophiles."This story is odd in so many reasons! Now, with 2 kids past the 15-year old mark and one hovering closely (she is 14) I know that teens have...
teaching sensitivity
2010-10-15 14:42:00
My student, B is thirteen and he has finally memorized Albeniz’s Capricho Catalán.  We’ve been working on it juxtaposed to Satie’s Gymnopedie No. 1. He favors the Satie piece (not memorized yet) for he plays it with a sensitivity that is remarkable.  It is such a gentle piece with mild dissonances.  He plays it with such intention that the melody floats.  He plays it in such a way that shows me that he is especially connected to this piece. But that sensitivity is not consistent – as if he disconnects from himself a tiny bit during particular measures. The faster and cheerful Albeniz piece needs more detailed study.  It’s busier and perhaps being on purpose and intentional is more demanding.  But how to listen slowly when things are fast?  Such is the dilemma with some.  Slower piece are easier to be present with while faster pieces demand a great deal of attention. He’s already listening in such a way that most grown ups have not trained...

Teaching Kids Digital Photography Basics - a Great Activity for Families
2010-10-11 03:49:00
Being a parent with two children whom I've known closely before and after I bought them their own  digital cameras, I think I notice that a child with a camera is a child who thinks about her environment. The camera just happens to be a tool that forces a child to actually look at what she's seeing.  Clutching a camera all the time, she can't help but be aware that she needs to do something with it that is noteworthy. A camera is something that makes a child look at the world with fresh eyes, and it gently gets you thinking about expressing something with your pictures. And even more so than the conventional camera, thinking and experimenting becomes really fun when you go digital - the results are instantaneous, and that makes the process really engaging. So as a parent, I feel I just need to gently steer her with a few digital photography basics that make sure poor quality results don't get her to lose interest; and I'll need to make sure she has plenty of activitie...
The Khan Academy is Teaching the Online World

Here is a great learning site to help brush up on your algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus skills. You can also find courses for economics, finance, history and science. This growing site is called the Khan Academy. The instructor, Salman Khan, is helping current students and former students gain or regain their footing with these topics. He basically provides a 10 minute block of instruction (due to youtube’s time limit) on a given topic, which is short enough to keep your attention span. His site offers over 1800 different courses.Salman gave up a successful career in finance to share his vast knowledge with the world for FREE. From what I can see, he’s a terrific math teacher. The Khan Academy is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) with the mission of providing a world-class education to anyone, anywhere.Check out the Khan Academy and its amazing story. And by the way, the Academy was recently selected by Google's project 10^100

A Sathya Sai Saga. Barry Pittard Recollects. Part 1
2010-07-20 00:07:00
For twenty five years, I was deeply devoted to Sathy Sai Baba. He is widely regarded as India's most famous and most politically and religiously powerful guru. At his behest, and as an unpaid service, I taught all three years intake in the Humanities degree course at the Sathya Sai College at Whitefield, via Bangalore, South India (1977-1978). In particular, quite apart from a large workload with the first two years, to have been handed the college Principal's third year English lectures was a considerable challenge for which I shall always be grateful, especially given that this was my first teaching job, except for school experience in my teaching diploma, and my coaching at a college in Australia that helped put me through university, and having also just done post graduate theatre training.

Note that the student did not argue the merits or demerits of natural law philosophy versus utilitarianism, the point that the professor, Kenneth Howell, was making. The university was so  impressed with the student's (il)logic that it spring into action and, as a certain sports announcer might say, "He gone!"Details of this unbelievable infringement on free...

Tom Hess: Teaching Chords To Beginning Guitar Students
2010-06-19 09:58:00
Teaching Chords To Beginning Guitar Students By Tom Hess A very common and frustrating problem beginning guitar students face is not being able to change chords quickly, fluently and musically. This may be frustrating for you, the guitar teacher, too, when you are not sure about how to solve the problem. There can be more than one reason why a student may struggle when trying to change chords smoothly. So the first thing to do when dealing with this challenge is to diagnose why the problem exists. You need to determine if your student has one of the following problems:A. A physical coordination problem B. He/she has not been practicing C. A lack of understanding of what needs to be done D. A mental processing problem Most guitar teachers ASSUME the reason is either A. (a physical coordination problem) or B. (little or no practice). Fact is, most of the time this is wrong. The majority of students actually DO attempt to practice. And TRUE physical coordination problems ar...
AM News: Did Kirk Lie About Teaching Record?

Kirk's Teaching Career Is Questioned NYT:  A review of public comments that Mr. Kirk has made over the last decade shows that while he may refer to himself as a former teacher, he does not talk about the brevity of his experience: a year in London at a private school and part-time in a nursery school as part of a work-study program while he was a student at Cornell University... A View From Both Ends of the Educational Spectrum Chicago News Cooperative (commentary):  A sane system would include real standards. It would replace clearly mediocre teachers with clones of these two women...  Chicago teachers pay freeze Tribune (editorial):  e hope...
Tom Hess: How To Greatly Expand Your Guitar Teaching Business
2010-06-03 00:54:00
How To Greatly Expand Your Guitar Teaching Business By Avoiding The Most Common Mistakes Guitar Teachers Usually Make by Tom HessDo you struggle to attract and keep many guitar students who would remain highly loyal to you for many years? Do you have a hard time consistently creating highly advanced guitar students who are happy with their musical skills? Are you struggling to earn the kind of income from teaching guitar that you want and deserve? Many guitar teachers would nod in agreement to at least one of the question sabove. Many years ago, I was no different.  I used to have a difficult time balancing the challenges of trying to help more guitar students, become a more effective guitar teacher, growing my guitar teaching income, and having anytime left at the end of the day.  When I began teaching guitar, I had only a few guitar students and struggled to support myself on guitar teaching income only.  My biggest challenges were getting consistent results wit...
Martz teaching Bears offense about field geography
2010-05-28 15:38:00
The Bears wide receivers are spending this offseason learning about field geography from Mike Martz. What's this? It sounds like some unnecessary college course but for the Bears receivers its a requirement. The basic premise is the receivers' ability to understand their route in relation to the field... I think. It also seems like there's a mix of philosophy and psychology blended into the curriculum too. As eloquently explained by CSN Chicago's John Mullin, field geography is "the place of each route in the overall".
Teaching 'The Wire' as Literature

"The Wire" Season 4 (photo: HBO)Though I rarely think of anything intelligent, I did once say to my friend Scott as we watched Season 4 of the HBO drama "The Wire" that someday they would teach that show like any other text you'd find in a college classroom. Turns out courses have sprung up in several colleges (Harvard, Duke, Berkeley) around the country built entirely around the five seasons of "The Wire." NPR profiled one such course taught by Jason Mittell at Middlebury College. Obviously, teaching a course that deals with social issues like urban violence, the underground drug economy, failing inner-city schools and a decaying manufacturing sector (among others) at a lily-white New England college reeks of the...

How To Get Started Teaching Guitar - 5 Things You Need to Know and Do by Tom HessIf you want to teach guitar, then it's critically important to know what the most important steps are to becoming the best teacher you can be. Many people who have been teaching guitar for a long time don't know all 5 of the important things you are now going to learn about how to teaching guitar.Like most people, when I started teaching guitar I also didn't know much about how to teach well. In my first 10 years of teaching I had taught thousands of guitar lessons and thought I was really good. Fact is, like most guitar teachers, I was only mediocre. Over the next 10 years of my teaching, I finally began to learn the most effective ways to consistently help guitar students progress to very high skill levels in shorter periods of time. Here are 5 things you should know and do when getting started te...

Switching Careers: From Business to Teaching
2010-02-21 21:59:00
Many of my friends are teaching one or two college courses, and a few have moved into full-time faculty positions.  One friend gave up his long, unsuccessful search for a PR position in order to return to college for a year to get a teaching certificate.  He's now an elementary school teacher and happy with his personally rewarding career choice. In each instance, these friends have had a variety of reasons for their decisions.  Some simply are in the "give-back" mode of their careers.  Several haven't had success in finding appropriate-level position-s in their fields.  A couple have always wanted to be teachers but got onto other career paths due to opportunities that seemed more appealing (and profitable) at the time they were starting out.  The Sunday New York Times...
