Harrell looks good in debut
2007-08-13 16:05:00 Green Bay Packers first round draft pick Justin Harrell could easily make a lot of legitimate excuses for poor play. He's still not 100 percent after coming off a torn biceps muscle suffered last year. He's still working himself into football shape. And he doesn't exactly have the support of Packer Nation after his drafting was roundly booed by fans.He still had a pretty good first preseason game wearing the green and gold, even with all those things working against him.Harrell had four tackles including a sack against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday night. Those statistics should be tempered by the fact that he was working against second, third and maybe even fourth string players. All in all, there's not much reason to worry for right now. Even the general manager is impressed."He actually played pretty good last night," Ted Thompson is quoted as saying in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Did you notice...?
2007-08-13 15:38:00 "(Green Bay general manager Ted) Thompson watched Saturday night's exhibition game from the Packers' sidelines rather than the opponent's owner's box, where he has to watch games in the regular season," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Did you see...?
2007-08-07 15:53:00 Former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf was at training camp practice on Monday. The Green Bay Press-Gazette says he was there as a friend of current general manger Ted Thompson.Wolf wasn't the only celebrity of sorts."Doug Chickering, executive director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, watched practice," reports Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Expect punter to join Packers
2007-08-03 14:52:00 The Packers will shortly have another player on their roster."General Manager Ted Thompson said he anticipates signing another punter soon to ease the load on incumbent Jon Ryan," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "The team placed David Lonie on injured reserve Tuesday because of an ankle injury."Ryan could use a break. If the team wants him to be effective in December, there's no use in overworking him in August.Expect a move to happen soon. Right now is the time backups can get some reps especially during the team's scrimmage and the first preseason game or two. Late in the preseason Ryan will be getting most of the reps to prepare for the regular season. It's very doubtful that no matter who the team brings in, that he'll be able to unseat Ryan. Therefore expect a rookie or inexperienced player merely looking for exposure to join the team.
Morency may be out longer than expected
2007-08-02 23:43:00 The word from Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is that running back Vernand Morency could be out longer than previously expected."Morency, in the locker room after practice, declined to discuss specifics about his injury or a timetable for his return," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Coach Mike McCarthy, however, said Morency could miss anywhere from two to four weeks with soreness in his patellar tendon."It is reported that general manager Ted Thompson said that the team will not bring in any more running backs despite the injury sustained by Morency.
Favre misses practice due to family death
2007-07-30 00:20:00 Brett Favre missed the Green Bay Packers' morning practice on Sunday while making arrangements to attend a family funeral and will probably miss one or two more later in the week to attend it."Rocky Byrd, the second husband of Favre?s mother-in-law, died of a heart attack on Saturday in Mississippi. Rocky lived on Brett and Deanna Favre?s estate in Hattiesburg, Miss., with Deanna?s mother, Ann Byrd," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.When exactly Favre will be missing practice is not yet known."The logistics and when he?s going to be here and when he?s not going to be here, I don?t know if we?re there yet,? General Manager Ted Thompson told the Green Bay Press-Gazette Sunday morning.Favre was scheduled to participate in practice Sunday morning had the difficulties not popped up.It's a good thing for Packer fans that Favre's primary backup, Aaron Rodgers, is playing to good reviews so far this training camp."It was only a blitz drill in the second practice of t...
New injuries surface Sunday
2007-07-30 00:11:00 It looks as if there were a couple of injuries at the first Green Bay Packers training camp practice on Saturday that weren't originally reported that day."RB Vernand Morency (knee) is day to day," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "General Manager Ted Thompson called the injury a contusion."It doesn't appear serious. Contusion is a fancy word for bruise and generally isn't similar to a concussion as it is sometimes confused with.Pelissero continues, "LB Juwan Simpson (shoulder) was injured Saturday. He was on the field in shorts this morning."
Driver shouldn't miss a game
2007-07-30 00:05:00 Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson tried to temper fans' fears on Sunday by saying that Pro Bowl wide receiver Donald Driver's injury wasn't serious enough for him to miss any playing time."Packers GM Ted Thompson said he would be surprised if WR Donald Driver, who has missed the first two practices with a shoulder injury, is not ready for the preseason opener Aug. 11 at Pittsburgh," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.It looks like Driver will simply play through any pain he has.
Humphrey possibly out for season
2007-07-29 23:59:00 It looks like tight end Tory Humphrey could be headed for season ending injured reserve."The Packers will continue evaluating backup tight end Tory Humphrey's ankle injury for at least the next few days, but a source with knowledge of the injury said Humphrey probably will be out for the season," reports PackersNews.com.This comes later than the prognosis published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by Tom Silverstein who originally wrote that Humphrey could be out as little as four weeks. It looks like the Packers could be in the market for another tight end."(Packers general manager Ted) Thompson said he would like to add another tight end at some point because of Tory Humphrey's ankle injury, but no move is imminent," reports Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette.How does Alge Crumpler sound?
Packers need improvement at tight end
2007-07-28 15:56:00 Railbird Central wasn't buying the hype last year when Ted Thompson called the tight end position one of the strongest positions on the team during the team's shareholder meeting in 2006.Yes, he really did say that.Well, 2006 is come and gone and the tight ends stunk! But in their defense, they did have to do a lot of things that they've never been asked to do before such as line-up at fullback and pass block more often. So will things be different in 2007?According to Tom Oates of the Wisconsin State Journal, head coach Mike McCarthy thinks so.Oates writes, "He said the tight ends will benefit more than anyone from being in his system for a year because they had the biggest learning curve last season as far as doing things they hadn't been asked to do previously."For the sake of Packers' fans sanity, we hope so.
Clearing up some confusion
2007-07-26 15:18:00 Green Bay Packers long snapper Rob Davis is apparently headed for a job in the team's front office, but not in the same position held as the recently departed George Koonce."Not on a solo basis," Packers general manager Ted Thompson told the Wisconsin State Journal. "It would depend on what he wants to do, how interested he is in it. But certainly it's something we're kicking around."Original reports had Davis taking over the role vacated by Koonce.
Jackson signs on with Packers
2007-07-26 01:09:00 Second round draft pick and former Nebraska running back Brandon Jackson has signed a multi-year contract with the Green Bay Packers.Jones is the ninth of Green Bay's 11 draft picks to sign with the team and the fourth this week.Only third rounder James Jones and first rounder Justin Harrell have yet to sign with the team, but even general manager Ted Thompson isn't concerned.According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, "Thompson said he was confident Jones would be signed before practice starts Saturday at 2 p.m. Thompson also said negotiations with Harrell were going smoothly and he didn't anticipate much of a delay in his signing."

Coreyisarealboy versus Green Bay Packers' GM Ted Thompson
2007-06-24 00:34:00 I love the Green Bay Packers, and it is out of this love that a strong loathing for the team's GM, Ted Thompson, has grown. I do not like the Chicago Bears, the Minnesota Vikings, the Detroit Lions, or any other team that is playing my Packers on any given week for the simple fact that they are

Thompson benefits from Jones snafu
2007-05-29 13:32:00 Could Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson come out smelling like a rose after the Bob Harlan/John Jones executive chief officer situation?According to Packer Update, "Ted Thompson looks to be the big winner in the John Jones fiasco. The two men weren?t close and there was a feeling that Jones would ultimately want to hire his own general manager. So while nobody knows who's next in line to replace chairman and CEO Bob Harlan, unless it?s Mike Sherman, Thompson?s future looks more secure today than it did just 72 hours ago."Take that information for what you will. |
