US sanctions on Iran?s central bank. Tehran has called this an act of war
2012-01-01 09:38:00
On the last day of 2011, US President Barack Obama Saturday signed into law measures penalizing foreign financial institutions doing business with Iran’s central bank, Bank Markazi – the toughest sanctions imposed yet over Iran’s development of a nuclear weapon. In recent weeks Tehran has repeatedly warned that it would deem the signing of this ...

Has He Ever Been To Beirut Or Tehran ??
2009-12-12 13:32:00
I think you should read this at Jad Aoun?s Lebanon News: Under Rug Swept. Mr. Holger Awakens has never been to Beirut and Tehran and yet he believes they are so bad to the level he believes that sort of violence which is normal scene in the night clubs only to be seen in these two cities because of the difference in political regimes and ideologies !!!?? If I were from Mr. Awakens I would first search in the history of those two old great cities and I would read blogs about these two cities to see what my media does not show me because of some political agenda and then I would think if I should refer about these cities in this ill way. Here are two nice blogs about Beirut and Tehran which Holger does not know and does not want they do exist : Blogging Beirut and Tehran 24. You know he is right , this is no Beirut nor Tehran .. it is Santa Monica !! Obama: ?I have a nuclear plant in my ass.?

WASHINGTON D.C. — US President Barrak Obama  and his allies raced Friday to use their revelation of a secret Iranian nuclear enrichment plant as long-sought leverage against Tehran, demanding that the country allow highly intrusive international inspections and propelling the confrontation with Tehran to a new and volatile pitch. Tehran's Bazaar
2009-08-03 10:47:00
One of the probably hundreds of alleys that make up the Bazaar. Tehran's main Bazaar is huge. Built on narrow sidewalks, it's about as traditionally Iranian as you can get. There's a Perisan saying about Tehran's Bazaar that goes: you can find/buy anything "from chicken milk to human life." (It sounds better in Persian, trust me.) In many ways, the Bazaar is a reflection of an Iran in transition. There are countless stores that have been "in the family" for generations. And yet, although materials are still carried throughout the Bazaar in old fahioned carts, the materials range from dvd players, to western clothes, to stereo players and flashy sunglasses. The Bazaar is bustling with endless activity and amazing...

Tehran's Lighter Side
2009-06-27 12:35:00
Many people may know Tehran as the political capital of Iran -- perhaps more recently as the center of chaos -- but  the city also has many cultural, historical, and (of course) political attractions. In my past week in Tehran, I've visited some of these sites. It's been a little challenging being in in the capital and these trips had to be coordinated to make sure I would not run into any violence. While there definitely have been riots in Tehran since I arrived, they've been on a much smaller scale with a lot more violence. I've seen some pretty rough beat downs (of both sides) and was not eager to get back into the fray. However, I think it's just as...
Iran Outrages Show Importance of Film and Other Evidence Against Oppression

Techology is at the forefront in exposing outrages against and oppression of human beings. Witness Iran right at this moment. As a result of BBC, Doordarshan and other footage, fake miracles of Sathya Sai Baba have been exposed
The Mood in Tehran
2009-06-22 10:29:00
I've been watching some news via satellite in Tehran, although only Al Jazeera and BBC were broadcasting last night. The areas of Tehran I visited which usually have protests were not filled with any protestors yesterday. It's hard to tell where the protests are going at this point, but without a doubt they're getting deadlier and deadlier. Now, the next step will be to hear the decision of the Guardian Council's 10% recount of disputed ballots. The recount is taking place with representatives of presidential nominees present. While this seems legitimate, I don't think this will appease protestors -- it will be impossible to remove all doubt.  This morning's Tehran Times, an english publication inside Iran, had this following headline: "Candidates and followers are different from rioters: Larijani." Larijani...
What's Happening in Tehran
2009-06-21 10:29:00
I didn't attend any street demonstrations yesterday, but there was definitely a heavy police presence in certain parts of Tehran. Ayatollah Khamenei had told demonstrators to yield, but some still hit the streets, although in much fewer numbers. At this point the demonstrations have broken down into violent street battles, losing any semblance they might have had to peaceful mass demonstrations. So what conclusions can we draw from what's happening? Can we boil it down to a fight for "greater freedoms" vs. tradition? That may be a factor, but the situation is much more nuanced than that. These elections show that all political systems are different and to believe we can chart "democratic progress" in Iran by U.S. standards is just plain wrong....

Good Afternoon Tehran
2009-06-20 08:48:00
It's Saturday afternoon here in Tehran. I arrived in here late last night and toured the areas of Tehran that have usually held protests, with no sign of demonstrations or Mousavi supporters. The Mousavi camp had previously planned on having a mass rally in Tehran today, but since Ayatollah Khamenei's sermon yesterday essentially telling demonstrators to wrap it up and choose more peaceful means, it's unclear what will happen. While Khamenei stated people have a right to protest and file complaints, he denounced the violence that usually came with the demonstrations. If the protests today happen, it's absolutely important that the protestors don't start fires, both literally and metaphorically. It's good to be back in Tehran, though, where the epicenter of the post-election...

Tehran - another experience
2009-06-01 09:56:00
4am - plane touched ATKH airport. I wonder why emirates do not announce it as Ayatollah Khomeini airport but just as a Tehran airport. Well before a visitor gets a glimpse of Iran, all passengers are made to walk through a long corridor whose width is barely enough for one's girth and hand luggage. Either side of the corridor has a wall that stretches up to the ceiling. Only couple of emergency glass doors on the left side alleviates the fear of any stampede if some untoward incident were to happen. On either side of the walls lie protruding camera lenses. Rhythmic stamping of 400 odd feet in combination of click-clack of luggage caster wheels made me wonder if I was a part of some rebel group who was being taken for an execution at wee hours. In my previous visits to Iran, I did not encounter any problem with my visa but this time their computer did not have our names. That meant spending another hour at the window that would open and close by the whims of a visa issuer acro...

Hosein Kaffash
2009-02-01 19:14:00
I The street was already clear from yesterday?s snow though patches still reflected luminous white from the bare earth of the mountainside. The brushes, tins, knives and rubber heels in Hosein?s wooden cart rattled as its wheels stuttered over the gravel left behind from the salt trucks. A Peykan taxi trundled past in low gear, pulling its thick steel carcass up the hill without complaint like a passive mule. Snow had again not been forthcoming this year, the extended autumn was proving as dry and bright as the summer. Though his grandfather?s orchard in the north had been sold long ago, out of habit, Hosein wondered whether the mild winter would snap suddenly and decisively like the year before and throttle the unripe fruit of the orange trees. Up ahead, a four-wheel drive attempted a handbrake turn but could only manage a disappointing two metre skid, grinding the gravel into the unrelenting asphalt with a scrape. The gleaming hulk sped away and Hosein could again hear the rattle ...

Short Cuts: Ta'arof
2009-01-08 23:49:00
The two men ordered their kebabs and the waiter motioned for them to sit at a simple formica table. The tiny kebab restaurant was busy this evening on the eve of Eid-e Ghadir.Outside the first snow of the year was falling gently on the glossy black streets. One of the men adjusted the position of a steel frame chair and sat. It was a tactical slip which allowed his friend to open the play in a classic ta?arof gambit.?Right, so why don?t I go next door and get us some fresh juice, what?ll you have??Taken by surprise, the seated man had no option but to come back at his friend with a rather cliched rejoinder, ?thank you sir, but please be my guest.? His predictably vain attempt to get up and beat his opponent to the door was stopped by his friend?s outstretched arm.?Come now, I won?t hear of it, let me this time, melon? pomegranate? These are on me,? the standing man said as he turned and made for the exit. Perhaps his move for the door was a fraction of a second premature.?Ok, ok,? t...

Collecting recyclable materials in Tehran for money is undertaken by a small army of economic migrants from Iran's outlying regions and neighbouring nations such as Afghanistan.Garbage in Tehran amounts to approximately 70% of the total waste produced in Iran. Plastic accounted for over 9% of this total in 2003 and is growing as a percentage of the whole. 2,355,740 tons of solid waste were produced in the capital in 2003, with much of it dumped in the Kahrizak landfill.© Iran VisitorIranian Music CDsBooks on IranGuide to TehranTagsrecycling Tehran
