Russian Telco Yota To Enter India’s Wimax Scene
2009-07-07 05:35:00
Russian telecom operator Yota, backed by Intel Capital may form an alliance with Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. Yota currently offers WiMAX services in three major regions of Russia. They wish to offer WiMAX-based broadband services in Mumbai and Delhi from their partnership with MTNL and rest of the country from their alliance with BSNL. Companies looking to expand their international markets find India one of the key markets. Yota is one of them who will have the first mover advantage by partnering MTNL and BSNL. Besides, not having to buy spectrum through a competitive bidding slated for later this year would be an additional advantage. Mr Yegor Ivanov, Director, Business Development, Yota said that 20 Mhz of spectrum would not be enough for operators to provide broadband services. At least 30 Mhz of spectrum is required for WiMAX services to function without any issues. IPTV services are provided in Russia to the Yota’s broadband subscribers. ...

Top IT, telco managers command top dollar-Singapore Competitive S’pore retail sector also pays its top honchos well: Hudson study By CHUANG PECK MING (SINGAPORE) Information technology and telecommunications (IT&T) is where the big bucks are - at least in Asia. Top managers in this sector are the most handsomely paid in major Asian cities, including Singapore.     They take home up to $750,000 a year here - and this does not even include their variable bonuses - according to Hudson, a leading executive recruitment firm in the region. And that’s the highest after Hong Kong, where managing directors in the IT&T sector can command an annual pay package of up to $916,000. Top IT&T honchos in Japan ($393,000-656,000) are only better off than their counterparts in Shanghai ($295,000-590,000), according to the comprehensive salary review by Hudson, which also covers lesser management jobs. Hudson was not available for comment, but industry observers say that IT&am...

Stampede of companies hoping to get new telco operating license (& henc
2007-10-20 10:11:00
More than 500 companies have applied for new telco operating licenses in India. AT&T was one those who applied just before the closing bell for applications. If AT&T should get the license, it would set the stage for a battle royale between it and Vodafone for a share of the world's fastest-growing cellular market.AT&T's wireless unit, the former Cingular, is of course already in a death match in the United States with Vodafone because Vodafone owns 40 percent of Verizon Wireless. An extension of that battle to India, where cellular-phone use is growing at an estimated eight million subscribers per month, thus would have the industry worldwide on the edge of its seats.Just to make things even more interesting, Sistema, the owner of Russia's largest wireless carrier, Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), also has applied for an Indian cellular license. There's also some suspicion that, buried in the pile of 500 applications, are papers from proxies for other Tier One cellular play...

Is SAMSUNG Becoming A Global Business Telco?

When a Telco Goes Dark
2007-08-17 01:54:00
Realtime Unified Communications – Ok, there isn’t a lot of precedent here. I can think of one major telecommunications interruption in my lifetime ? The Hinsdale fire on Mother’s Day in 1998. A fire caused a catastrophic outage in an Illinois Bell central office that took the phone service out in a large degree. Obviously local service was disrupted, but the building was a vital hub for long distance services as well. ... read more

Rural telcos ordered to open up to VoIP
2007-03-06 06:06:01
It’s not a vision, it’s an order, VoIP for all. The FCC has ruled that incumbent local exchange carriers must connect to VoIP services, overruling two state public service commission opinions. The decision was taken after Time Warner Cable filed a petition, in which the cable company complained that the South Carolina and Nebraska public service commissions had allowed rural local exchange carriers to refuse access to wholesale telecom vendors connecting to Time Warner’s VOIP service. In a statement, the FCC explains that opening the telecoms market to VoIP providers “ensures that consumers in all areas of the country reap the benefits of competition in the form of lower prices, innovative services and more choice.” Meanwhile, Time Warner found out that four other states required local carriers to connect with the wholesale vendors.
