In Treatment on HBO
2008-02-04 05:33:00 HBO premiered a brilliant original show last week - original in both structure and content. Anyone who thinks HBO is running out of steam as a pioneer in the cable form should take a look at In Treatment. The show consists of a 30-minute segment every weekday evening. Psychotherapist Paul, played by the always memorable Gabriel Byrne, sees a different patient Monday through Thursday. And on the 5th day, Friday, he sees his own therapist, Gina (played by Dianne Wiest) and becomes a patient himself.Don't confuse this with Tell Me You Love Me. The talk on In Treatment is much more intense and intelligent. In fact, it's so good, that all almost you get on In Treatment is talking, and that was more than enough to keep my wife and me hanging on almost every word.Monday's patient thinks she's falling in love with Paul - erotic transference, as the shrinks call it. Laura's beautiful and smart - she's an anesthesiologist - and the real question is whether Paul is falling in love w...

Looking In on The L Word...
2008-01-13 23:11:00 Long before women were being wittily, hilariously, so coolly bedded almost round the clock by Hank Moody in Californication, they were being wittily, hilariously, coolly bedded around the clock by ... women, in The L Word, on Showtime.Californication and Weeds are often cited (by me and others) as the spear carriers of Showtime's sweep into first place as the most innovative story telling network on cable, but this leap forward really started with The L Word, which debuted its 5th Season last Sunday. The series has been and still is in a class by itself. It is more daring than HBO's Big Love - lesbian sex is more radical than polygamy. It explores more nuances in sexual relationships than HBO's Tell Me You Love Me. And The L Word of course has more women in positions of power and not in power than Weeds. But The L Word feels most like Californication. Both shows take place in California, and both are intimately intertwined with writing, movie-making, and their travails, as well...

Tell Me You Love Me Concludes for First Season
2007-11-06 00:49:00 A very satisfying finale to Tell Me You Love Me on HBO On Demand last night...1. Jaime and Hugo's getting back together and married was entirely motivated. I also liked the realistic way this episode built up to their happy ending. They meet in a gas station mart. Next have dinner, but don't sleep together. Instead, they talk later that night on the phone... and seal the deal. There surely were more people with broken hearts in the world before Alexander Graham Bell.2. Palek walks out, Carolyn loses their baby, Palek comes back. A harsh arc, but it's about the only way the couple could have proceeded. What's not entirely clear is whether Carolyn will ever completely forgive Palek (I would say not - but there was no clear indication one way or another on the show).3. Katie and David come this close to splitting, but - at last - make passionate love. This was predictable - but nonetheless satisfying. And let me say here that Ally Walker's acting as Katie was really excepti...

Tell Me You Love Me on Tell Me You Love Me (Episode 8)
2007-10-22 22:00:00 There is a moment in some movies - maybe some novels, too, I'm not sure - which can either be tacky and obvious or good and locking-it-in. I don't think I've ever seen in a television series. It happens when a character in the movie says the name of the movie. I know I've seen this a bunch of times - readers, let me know if you have any examples...Anyway, I'm sure I've never seen it in a television series - until last night, on Episode 8 of Tell Me You Love Me on HB0. In the very last scene, Nick (Ian Somerhalder) and Jamie (Michelle Borth) are evaluating their fledging relationship, Ian correctly feeling that he may want Jamie more than she wants him - which she of course denies - and Nick utters the magic words: "Tell me you love me."I think it served last night to ratify the series, in some way - by finally making it crystal clear to everyone that that's each partner of each couple really most wants, whether by words or deeds. This is what the series is really most ...

Tell Me You Love Me Seven Times
2007-10-15 21:03:00 Well, I've now seen seven episodes of Tell Me You Love Me on HBO, and thought I'd report back to you, your dedicated correspondent, about how I think the series is progressing.First, the sex continues to be explicit and good. Episode 7, still fresh in my mind, had some especially good scenes with Jamie and Hugo, and Carolyn and Palek (separately, that is).And what about the four ongoing relationship stories? Let's take them in chronological order, starting with the youngest.Jamie (Michelle Borth) and Hugo (Luke Farrell Kirby): are no longer a couple, even though they were together last night, and who knows what might happen next. Turns out that Jamie, who in the first episode was obsessing about Hugo's wandering eyes, has a history herself. This is one of the signatures of the series: With each couple, we start out thinking that just one of the partners is causing the problem. But we soon learn that both are responsible, in their own ways. Jamie has now slept with two oth...

Weeds 3 Ep 7: Conrad Rules!
2007-09-25 21:03:00 I've been missing Conrad (well played by Romany Malco) on Weeds this season. He's had almost no role, but ...Last night, he reveals that he - not the Mexicans - was the one who shot Marvin in the ass, as a way of fomenting a war between the Mexican dealers and U-Turn, which Conrad thought would help Nancy and him get out under from under U-Turn's thumb - which is just what it accomplished.Conrad is clearly the smartest guy (including women) on the show. He's a Luther Burbank genius when it comes to growing weed. And he's a master at strategic planning. All that remains now is for Conrad and Nancy to finally get together. But it hasn't happened yet, and Nancy, to celebrate her freedom, goes for a little afternoon delight with Sullivan (Matthew Modine), who has been hitting on her, grabbing her ass, as well as hitting on Celia...Meanwhile, Weeds is starting to give Californication and Tell Me You Love Me a run for their money in the full-frontal nudity department - male and...

Tell Me You Love Me (Because I?m Angst-Ridden and Needy)
2007-09-20 10:40:00 I watched the first episode of this show twice. The first time, I called my husband in (”You’ve got to see this!”), and we had to replay the hand job scene (”Was that real?”). When I watched the show again, it wasn’t because it was so interesting to me, but because I was trying to ...

Tell Me How You Feel about “Tell Me You Love Me”
2007-09-15 00:23:00 HBO's "Tell Me You Love Me" premiered last Sunday, but the ratings didn't live up to the hype — much of which focused on the "is it or isn't it real?" debate about the sex in the show. I'm surprised so few people tuned in, because when I finally watched "Tell Me," I found that it had a lot more going on than graphic bedroom antics (though those were certainly present). The show is a gritty, bleak look at intimacy and love, and at times it's almost hard to watch. It does have its graphic elements, but it's also surprisingly sensitive and realistic, and I'm planning to stick with it through the rest of the season. I have a few clips from upcoming episodes to share — one for each of the show's three couples. Check them out below, and then tell me how you're feeling about "Tell Me" so far. Just read more

Michelle Borth, "Tell Me You Love Me" actress: Mr. Media Interview, Pt. 1
2007-09-13 03:24:00 The ironic thing about Michelle Borth?s role as Jamie, a woman whose fiancé won?t commit to monogamy in the new HBO series "Tell Me You Love Me," is that she is the kind of sexy, intoxicating woman that could probably drive the best-intentioned married man to cheat on his wife.DOWNLOAD THE MP3; LISTEN HERE.ALSO AVAILABLE AS A PODCAST ON iTUNES and ODEO.BOB ANDELMAN: I was fascinated watching the show. It was very unlike anything I think I?ve ever seen, even on HBO.MICHELLE BORTH: Well, that?s a huge compliment. Thank you.ANDELMAN: How was this show pitched to you, and what was your first reaction to it?BORTH: It was pitched to me about three years ago, during pilot season, and it was very much what you would think. It was proposed to me as this really graphic show, and that that was something I should know before going into it. And I was like, ?Okay, well, let me read it.? And I read the pilot, and I was floored. I was really floored by it because I personally really connected with ...

Michelle Borth, "Tell Me You Love Me" actress: Mr. Media Interview, Pt. 2
2007-09-13 03:13:00 (Return to Part 1)ANDELMAN: One of the things that I know people have talked about a lot about the show is the male full frontal nudity, which, even in movies, you don?t see that, and that seems to bring that other element to the show that makes it seem that much more graphic because you?re really not used to seeing that.BORTH: I think that?s the whole point, though. I think it?s really interesting that that?s been like a big fuss because I almost want to say to the men, ?Oh, boo hoo, are you feeling exploited? I?m sorry!? I think it?s funny that people are shocked by it because we?ve seen frontal nudity from women. We?ve seen topless scenes and all of that. I like the show. I like that we?re bringing that to the screen. I think that it wouldn?t do the show justice if we just favored one gender. The show is about the truth of relationships, and it doesn?t favor specifically to the men audience by giving you lots of T & A. I love that because that?s not what the show is about. It is ...

TELL ME YOU LOVE ME
2007-09-07 23:28:00 No, I’m not in need of a hug and a grilled cheese sandwich with the crust off. Tell Me You Love Me is a new show premiering on Sunday on HBO. I got a request by an ad agency looking for my “honest, journalistic opinion” of the show. Well, not really considering myself a journalist, but ...

Tell Me You Love Me on HBO
2007-09-05 17:06:00 I saw the first episode of Tell Me You Love Me on HBO On Demand last night. It begins this Sunday, and I was going to wait until then to see it, like a normal person, but (a) who says I'm normal and (b) reporters from the Christian Science Monitor and the Baltimore Sun called in the past week to interview me about whether I thought Californication and Tell Me You Love Me represent a new leap forward in sexuality on television. They do. Network television was and to some extent still is the old maid of media when it comes to sexuality. NYPD Blue made a little bit of progress in the 1990s, but it was HBO on cable which made the big breakthrough in the Bada Bing on The Sopranos, and went even further with Atia and Brutus (separately) in Rome. Now even that has been surpasssed by Hank and his continuous escapades in Californication, and the three couples we see in imperfect and intriguingly difficult relationships, in and out of beds and cars and clothes, in Tell Me You Love Me.My favor...
