Wat Khao Rang (Rang Hill Temple)
2012-01-22 16:40:00
OK so it's 2012 now and this Phuket Blog has been going since April 2006. I love temples, and have blogged more than 30 temples and shrines in the Phuket area. If you think temples are boring don't click here: Phuket Temples and Shrines. There are a few "on the list" to be blogged more for the sake of completeness than anything else. But imagine a sunny morning, driving through Phuket Town with my wife .. kids have been dropped at school and we've dropped a broken laptop off for repairs. We're driving on familiar roads, heading north near the Vachira hospital. There is a little-used side road by the hospital that heads up to the top of Rang Hill. My wife asks - do you know the temple up this road?I must have driven this way before, but seem to have missed Rang Hill Temple (Wat Khao Rang). Hidden from view up that small side road by the hospital is something quite impressive! There's more than one Big Buddha in Phuket....OK, it's not as big as "The" Big Buddha, but it's very n...

Protecting foundations of Roman temple and Phoenician port
2011-11-20 08:55:00
“The discovery of the first Phoenician port in Beirut along with the foundations of the Roman temple did not thrill the construction firm Venus all that much, as this will delay or maybe even put to stop the process of building their project on the plot. They have also prevented the media from entering or filming the area. Beirut has lost most of its archeological treasures in the Solidere area, and many fear the port will end up completed bulldozered before crucial historical research has been carried out properly”, posted TANN on Archaeology News Network.
Naiharn Temple
2011-09-22 16:11:00
Phuket is big enough that after living here for more than 10 years there are still unexplored corners. Naiharn beach is right in the south of the island and actually I don't reckon I'd been down this way for maybe a couple of years. It's not "our" part of the island, as we live in Kathu near Phuket Town. My wife and I when we first met would often come to Naiharn and Rawai beaches, stopping off at the viewpoint between Kata and Naiharn or carrying on to Phromthep Cape. So much nice scenery in this part of Phuket and yet still so very quiet compared to the main beach areas. The road from Kata to Naiharn twists and turns until it finally drops down into the trees passing by quite a lot of recent development in the area. Lots of restaurants and bars and small hotels. The Naiharn area is popular with expats who like the quiet side of life. It's certainly much busier than 10 years ago but in some areas still feels like an English village! It's very neat and tidy and there is no ugly...

Karon Temple Market
2011-09-10 10:51:00
The local market is always a good place to get a slice of local life, and you can find markets all over Phuket. Already on this blog you can find information about the well known Weekend Market, and also the big Kathu market. I do realise that most visitors to Phuket won't be putting "visit to a local market" top of their list, but there is one market in Phuket that's very easy to visit, especially if your hotel is near the north end of Karon Beach! There is a market in the grounds of Karon temple every Tuesday and Saturday and rather surprisingly considering that I like markets and work in Karon .. I had never stopped at the market until last week. It starts in the afternoon and goes on into the night. I went just after work, a bit before sunset. It was not that busy .. well, it's low season and I think more people go to the market after dark. I parked 20m down the road and the first thing I saw was this sign (above) at the "Nok Noi" roadside restaurant. There are lots of small r...

Sathya Sai Trust In Vast Treasure Scandals: Secret Temple, Van, and Bus Sta
2011-06-20 14:04:00
If due diligence occurs, Andhra Pradesh police investigations will need to pursue, at a simple count, at least four lots of alleged Sai Trust illicit treasury violations. Up to the time of Sathya Sai Baba's death, there were previous reports of at least one truckload of treasure making its way out of Puttaparthi. But, then, the Sai Central Trust denied this allegation. I referred to this earlier, all too easily-forgotten report in my post of yesterday: Reports of Sathya Sai Central Trust Van Laden With Treasure Seized By Andhra State Police. A prominent spokesman for Trustees and the Council of Management, Venu Srinivasan stated: ?In the light of baseless, irresponsible and false accusations of defalcation of gold, valuable artefacts and even money, it is emphatically stated that the accusations are wholly untrue and it is believed these have been engineered by certain vested interests?. (Economic Times article: ?Baba had no successor in mind: Trustees, election for Sai T...

Sathya Sai Baba followers censor all critical comments they can
2010-12-28 13:20:00
Most of the comments I made on a YouTube video which had been posted by a convinced Sai Baba devotee (username ‘godisone15) were selectively removed by him (or her), no doubt because they document the errors in his/her statements from Sathya Sai Baba’s own journal, which he always read and approved in those days (a ...

Wat Tha Reua Temple
2010-11-11 14:37:00
A few weeks ago I had some holidays while Mum and Dad were visiting from England. On one of their first days here, we went off exploring. Our family is not really into the very touristy things, preferring to find a bit of real local life and local culture. When I was a kid, we visited churches and cathedrals. Wherever we went, there had to be a church or cathedral. I was a kid. Mum still recalls me saying "Seen one stained glass window, seen them all". I am basically an atheist. I like the "be nice to people" aspect of religion, but not the "Praise the Almighty!" bit. I might write a book one day called "God is an egotist so praise Him or you're going to Hell", although I am sure it's been done already.Anyway. I like temples. I am now a dad. And I have already blogged loads of Phuket Temples and Shrines. Wat Tha Reua is between Phuket Town and Thalang just south of the Heroines monument. The Tha Reua area is an older more rural part of Phuket with lots of rubber plantations and, t...

Temple-Song-Hearts Go Way Up North
2010-11-01 18:18:00
Seems this site has lain neglected for a whole year now, while I’ve been writing elsewhere. Rather than a tedious round-up or a list of more specific apologies, I thought I’d highlight a favourite event of the last twelve months: singing Sri Chinmoy’s music in Norway and Iceland, with Temple-Song-Hearts. It was my first time in either country. Oslo gave a chance to visit the Eternal Peace Flame and the statue of Sri Chinmoy that I had only seen in photographs (even though I designed its website a couple of years ago). There was also an opportunity to visit both branches of The Fragrance of the Heart (whose website I also had the honour of making a while back too!). Both cafés are far more divine and uplifting than their virtual counterparts, and the photographs of the coffee do it no justice at all. Bizarrely, I was homesick for Iceland when I came back home. There was an otherworldly beauty and freshness that far north, an intimacy with nature, and an unbridled...

Murders in The Abode of Supreme Peace temple ? 1
2010-10-15 18:30:00
In case anyone might forget these horrendous murders and their cover-up by the Government of India, the graphic description needs to be circulated once again. This murder case will haunt Indian authorities for decades to come, and very rightly so. It is not even one of the most serious miscarriages of justice, because no form ...

Cornell Tramples Temple! Bring It On Badgers!!
2010-03-19 23:39:00
Cornell alums celebrate the Big Red victory at Harry Caray's Steakhouse. Talk about March Madness!! Today, for the first time since 1998, an Ivy League team won a game in the NCAA tournament. For some schools, a win in the tourney's opening round is expected, but for the Cornell Big Red, today's trampling of Temple was huge.  Many predicted that No. 12 Cornell would upset the No. 5 ranked Owls, but the Ivy League champions certainly weren't a lock to win. In each of their last two NCAA appearances, the Big Red were knocked out in the opening round, the pressure of playing on a big stage too much for them to handle. Today they came out with a balanced...

Luang Pu Supha Temple
2009-09-20 07:21:00
On a grey and wet morning I awoke early for a visit to a temple which has suddenly become famous. Local news last week reported that the revered Monk, Luang Pu Supha could be the world's oldest living man, having just celebrated his 113th birthday. This has yet to be ratified by Guinness. Luang Pu Supha is a well traveled Monk having visited Laos, Burma, China and Europe. He returned to Phuket in his 60's and dedicated time helping the sea gypsies. The temple he resides at now was named after him by HM Queen Sirikit. The main temple is still under construction. All activities for now take place in more modern looking buildings. The temple is not far from Way Chalong, up a side road leading towards the hills. There is talk that this road will one day link up with Patong.. Indeed on a mountain bike or hiking you can follow this road up and over the hill, but it might take a while before the real road actually gets built. The main hall, where the birthday celebrations had been held jus...
Trash Temple Made Recycled Plastic in Rotterdam

Trash Temple Made from 100 tons Recycled Plastic in RotterdamA temporary yet inspiring structure is what Salzig Design is creating as part of the 2007 Follydock Festival, the Trash Temple. Made from 100 tons of pet bottles that are pressed into bales, this green structure is built in Rotterdam, Netherlands. This one of a kind structure may not be erected already but the inspiration of building structures that make use of the possible harm to the environment we produce each day particularly the plastic bottles is still there and influenced many future and present designers and architects. Various green projects are already created following the trash temple including the watershed, plastic boat, and the recycled bottle greenhouse.

Wat Sam Kong Temple
2009-07-27 15:47:00
It seems to have been a long time since I blogged a temple. I have a vague plan to blog all the Temples in Phuket, though it could take for ever. A lot of temples in a small area! Some are important, some serve small local communities, some are easy to find, some are hidden away. A couple of weeks ago I visited Sam Kong Temple (Wat Sam Kong) which is only a few km from my house and we've driven past the entrance hundreds of times.Sam Kong (meaning 3 hills) is in the North East of Phuket Town. The area is an older part of town, and like Kathu just down the road was an important part of the tin mining industry in times past. Like Kathu, many of the locals in this area are Chinese Thais who came to Phuket during the tin mining boom in the 19th century. There is a Chinese Shrine close by too. The Sam Kong temple entrance is about 200m along the bypass road from the Tesco Lotus junction (officially called the Sam Kong junction) towards the main airport road.As usual for a small local te...

Media Temple Dobla la Ram de su Plan (dv) Dedicated Virtual
2009-06-06 05:06:00
Murders in the Prashanthi temple ? reflections 2

The Indian press repeatedly described events, as best they were able to investigate them through eye-witnesses who were too frightened to stand forth with their names. Buddhist temple built 1.5million recycled beer bottles
2009-02-19 13:04:00
Built using more than a million beer bottles, this incredible temple in the north-east of Thailand is a novel way to recycle any empties. The resident Buddhist monks at the Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew complex encourage local authorities to deposit any used bottles at the temple which they then use to build new structures.Having already built the a temple and even shelters, the monks who live in the town of Khun Han really have got into the spirit of recycling.Glass houses: There are 20 buildings made of bottles in the complexSometimes known as Wat Lan Kuad, or Temple Of A Million Bottles, the temple uses the discarded bottles to construct everything from the crematorium to the toilets.Altogether there are about 1.5million recycled bottles in the temple, and the monks at there are intending to recycling even more.'The more bottles we get, the more buildings we make,' says Abbot San Kataboonyo.A monk stands outside the Temple Of A Million Bottles which was built from used bottles donated ...
Temple Species
2009-02-14 18:19:00
כ' שבט תשס"טImbolgen 20Early this shabbat morning before sunrise, I came awake. As I was waking, I saw the sounds of two words as they burst into my consciousness - namely:zendel (זן-דיל pronounced zen-dil)gezereig (גזר-הגג pronounced gezer-hegg)I got up and wrote the words down before going back to sleep. This morning, the message in the magic words comes alive.זן - species, strain, variety, typeדיל - deal, agreement, something for something, an equal exchange, a substitutionגזר - divide into pieces, cutting, decreeing, Temple elevation, removingהגג - maximum, top (reward and punishment)Taken together, the two words come together in my mind to mean 'species which mediates and distributes maximum punishment or reward'. In other words, this 'type of Temple consciousness' mediates to support, modify or rescind Divine decree. This 'type' of awareness exists in me.

No, "Vitaphone Varieties" hasn't fallen by the wayside --- nor has this writer!True enough, recent posts have been scattered and erratic at best, and gone are the days of new additions that appeared with clockwork regularity in years past --- but I owe it to you, to the topic at hand and (I suppose) to myself, to try to maintain a monthly posting schedule. Many thanks to the readers who have written, expressing concern, horror, anger and polite curiosity --- for these notes did much to hasten my return! I cannot hope for this blog to ever lay claim to being "100 Shows in One" as the glorious lobby-card for "Show of Shows" depicted above does, but we'll try our best! Oh yes, there will be a third annual "Yuletide Frolic" post in time for the holidays --- so check back! For now, let's get to it. Forgive the somewhat rusty prose, pace and content of this post --- I'm limbering up after too long being away from the keyboard! In late 1928, newspapers informed readers that "George Jessel...
