Ancient Danish king’s face reconstructed using Terracotta technique
2008-05-19 13:46:00 Copenhagen, May 19 (ANI): Two men, a scientist and sculptor, have used the terracotta facial reconstruction technique to recreate the face of an ancient Danish king. According to a report in the Copenhagen Post, the men behind the facial reconstructions are coroner Niels Lynnerup and sculptor Bjorn Skaarup. Since 2001, they have used the technique to put faces to many long-dead persons, including 17th century nobleman Kaj Lykke and Denmark’s oldest known citizen, the Koelbjerg woman of Funen, who lived around 10,000 years ago. Now, they have recreated the face of King Svend Estridsen of Denmark, who has been dead for over 900 years. A cast of the king’s skull was taken at the beginning of the 1900s and has been used by the two men to create a vivid likeness of the ruler’s face using the terracotta technique. The technique is used in many Western countries to recreate the faces of unidentified deceased persons and then shown publicly in the hopes of someone recognizing the face...

Terracotta Pots All The Rage
2008-01-17 00:00:00 Although terracotta has been used architecturally for many centuries, it wasn’t until a couple of decades ago that people started to use it for household purposes. It’s hardly surprising that the benefits of terracotta pots were soon realised as the thickness of them guarantees resistance to weather and ageing and they are plant friendly due ...

Terracotta Army
2007-09-13 16:41:00 Terracotta ArmyThe Terracotta Army was buried with the Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huangdi) in 210-209 BC (his reign over Qin was from 247 BC to 221 BC and over unified China from 221 BC to his death in 210 BC). Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huangdi in the afterlife. Consequently, they are also sometimes referred to as "Qin's Armies".The Terracotta Army was discovered in March 1974 by local farmers drilling a water well to the east of Mount Lishan.Mount Lishan is also where the material to make the terracotta warriors originated. In addition to the warriors, an entire man made necropolis for the emperor has been excavated.Construction of this mausoleum began in 246 BC and is believed to have taken 700,000 workers and craftsmen 38 years to complete. Qin Shi Huangdi was interred inside the tomb complex upon his death in 210 BC.In July 2007 it was determined, using remote sensing technology, that the mausoleum contains a 90-foot tall building built above the tomb,...

Xian, The Terracotta Warriors
2005-07-16 17:31:00 KB is driven mad by those documentaries on satellite TV about Rome, which constantly refer to 'the greatest Empire the world has ever known'. The worst offender recently was the bombastic Boris Johnson in his BBC series on the glories and grandeur of the Romans. As an educated, worldy, Asian-born scientist, KB finds this kind of casual, narrow-minded claptrap infuriating; and who can blame him? By the time Julius Caesar was rolling around the Dordogne, the great Chinese Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi had been underground with his Terracotta Army for over 200 years, having created what was (and is) really the 'greatest empire the world has ever known' - with a culture, arts and sciences far ahead of anything which existed in 'the west'. |
