Leave petrol retailing to the professionals - not to the oil companies
2008-11-04 13:46:00
Alastair Darling?s (30th October) call for Shell and the other oil majors to reduce the pump price of petrol reveals an ignorance of how the oil business really works. There is little modern case for Shell, BP or the rest of the oil companies to be involved in petrol retailing at all. There are no ...
Thailand?s Tesco saga
2008-06-04 21:15:00
The epic of Thailand Vs. Tesco is reminiscent of similar battles with foreign entities. Tesco is a British-based chain of grocery stores. Some people are under the impression that the brand is French. Carrefour, another retail juggernaut tearing through Thailand, is French. In the UK, Tesco has an outstanding reputation ? or at least it did ...

Glossopdale Supermarket sweep part 3: Tesco
2008-05-18 19:25:00
In our final post about Supermarket expansion and the (thus far attempted) transformation of Glossopdale, we turn to the veritable Dark Lords, Tesco.'What about Tesco' you may ask? Well, putting aside the traffic problems their current store in Glossop causes we can reveal that they too have plans for expansion. We say 'reveal', but it is actually a reminder of information that is already in the public domain, with a certain amount of educated guesswork and speculation tagged on. But as usual, we are prepared to fall, as well as stand, by our predictions. On 7th November 2007, the Glossop Advertiser (and not the Glossop Chronic, which is rather strange) featured a front page headline 'Supermarket on Stilts'* about Tesco's plans for Glossop. In the article, they outline their plan to relocate the store 'nearer to the Town Centre', although it was hinted that this would be 'in a different part of the (Wren Nest) site'. An exhibition of the plan was held on one day - the same...

Nuevo Banksy: Generación Tesco rindiendo pleitesía a la bolsa
2008-03-04 12:52:00
Grande Banksy Siempre!
Mottram Tesco - update
2008-02-21 22:50:00
You may remember our exclusive article back last month about TMBC's plans to bring Tesco to Mottram.Well now the press has caught hold of the story since the issue was raised at last week's Longdendale & Hattersley District Assembly. And quite rightly, concerns are being raised about the increased traffic it will bring to the area. And it seems Tameside will have a fight on their hands if residents like Jane Whyte have anything to do with it:"If I have to walk round every house on this estate and Broadbottom and Mottram and get a petition, I will do that rather than see these children hurt."Jane wants an entrance/exit to the store either on Mottram Road or Stockport Road, rather than Ashworth Lane. But that will clearly really mess with traffic projections - if they aren't already hugely affected by this development. And we revealed last month that this is the reason for the delays in the Public Inquiry into the bypass, as the existing traffic models will be severely comprom...

Tesco backs cheap alcohol limits
2008-02-21 07:21:00
BBC sats, "Supermarket giant Tesco says it is willing to work with the government on possible legislation that would limit its ability to sell cut-price alcohol. The British Medical Association, which says cut-price offers fuel binge drinking, has said it wants tougher restrictions on how alcohol is sold. Tesco says ministers must take the lead because competition laws stop retailers from artificially raising prices. The UK's biggest retailer says it would be "commercial suicide" to act alone. And it said it was too simplistic to blame price alone for binge drinking and other alcohol-related problems. However, the supermarket giant said it was prepared to take an active role in discussions about possible legislation on pricing and promotions. Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Tesco's executive director for corporate and legal affairs, said action would have to come from the government. She said: "We can't put up our prices because people will simply shop elsewhere - it could be commercial suic...

New low for Tesco
2008-02-07 16:52:00
Tesco has come under fire from animal rights campaigners for slashing the price of its standard chickens by more than a third to £1.99.Welfare groups argue that the discount undermines their efforts to get consumers to pay more for poultry that has been reared more humanely. If you can’t afford to buy a decent bird that ...
Tesco Condoms
2008-02-07 14:19:00
A man was in a long line at his local Tesco store. As he got to the register he realized he had forgotten to get condoms, so he asked the checkout girl if she could have some brought up to the register. She asked, 'What size condoms?'The customer replied that he didn't know. She asked him to drop his trousers. He did.She reached over the counter, grabbed hold of him and called over The intercom, 'One box of large condoms, Till 5'The next man in line thought this was interesting, and like most Of us was up for a cheap thrill. When he got up to the register, he told the checker that he too had forgotten to get condoms, and asked if she could have some brought to the register for him.She asked him what size, and he stated that he didn't know. She asked him to drop his trousers. He did.She gave him a quick feel, picked up the intercom and said, 'One box of medium-sized condoms, Till 5.'A few customers back was this teenage boy. Tesco Now Estate Agents
2008-02-04 11:12:00
Tesco has set the cat amongst the pigeons of UK estate agencies and property portals by announcing that it intends to launch an online estate agency service. The financial strength behind Tesco could see undercutting the traditional estate agencies. The move is response to the difficulty it experienced with it private sellers website services. Rightmove and Primelocation could also be forced, under competition rules, to list Tesco's properties if it becomes a fully fledged agent.

More than drift wood!!!Tesco or Asda ?
2008-01-28 09:12:00
If you go done to the beach today, you better be in for a surprise! Well, actually it was last week, but whats a few days between friends? There was loads of wood washed up on the shore from the sunken ship that lost it's load of timber. As fare as the eye could see all the way along the beach at the high tide line there were planks a plenty. It was quite an odd sight and prompted a few jokes about getting wood on the beach and other silly oaks about planks and pineing for a forest and all that, but it was something to talk about during the quiet and boring month that is and always will be January. Oh how I hate this month of the year, it's always when I get most depressed, down and introverted. Yes, that could very well be why I've taken a little break from the blog as well as pretty much everything else, but hey, the month is almost over and so my spirits are lifted. Perhaps that could be something to do with the fact that payday is just a few days away! So here we are, back an...
Chatsworth hosts the Tesco 99 British Rally Championship
2008-01-22 00:00:00
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the British Rally Championship, the Rally Show at Chatsworth - together with the organisers of the Tesco 99 British Rally Championship - have arranged for four of the nine stage events which will form part of the Show to qualify for BRC points. The Tesco 99 British Rally Championship kicks off in April with the Pirelli International in Cumbria; the second round in May is the Jim Clark International, held in the Scottish Borders. The BRC will next visit the Rally Show at Chatsworth in June, where all registered BRC contenders who start the event will score five class bonus points towards their end-of-year total. To make this a very special occasion, the Show is contacting all past winners of the BRC to try and get them to Chatsworth for the weekend of 7/8 June and is organising a birthday party for the championship, to be held on the Show site on the Saturday evening. The Championship Manager of the Tesco 99 BRC, Mark Taylor said: "We are simpl...
The Free-Range Chickens Debate
2008-01-16 16:47:00
I am delighted to see so many TV programmes on British TV at the moment discussing nutrition and the quality of our food. What used to be a minority interest subject is being screened at peak viewing times and there are several programmes on offer at the moment.TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall kicked off with a three-part series, "Hugh's Chicken Run" in which he built a temporary chicken barn and raised 4,000 chicks from 3 days old to slaughter time, of which just over a half were raised by current intensive standards and the rest given a life and some freedom. The intensive group were kept indoors, saw no natural light, had nothing to do other than feed 23.5 hours per day and walked around in each other's urine and faeces. The shed stank of ammonia from the urine. Their life ended at 39 days. The lucky chicks started off the same but after some days were given straw bales, perches, footballs and dangling CDs - all playthings to amuse chickens. Then, the gates were opened and th...
Tesco comes to Mottram & Hattersley
2008-01-02 14:31:00
Everyone has been puzzling about what motivation the Highways Agency have for the constant delays they have initiated in the Public Inquiry process. But now, our sources in Tameside have new information which we believe helps us to provide an explanation. You may remember the much-vaunted 'regeneration' of Hattersley from earlier last year - an injection of £250 million to transform (code word: 'gentrify') the area. The details of the deal include the transfer of housing stock previously owned by Manchester City Council to the newly-created Peak Valley Housing Association. The terms of the deal ensured this was done at 'zero value'. Nevertheless, the new Housing Association still had to plug a £20 million hole to fund repairs and improvements to existing housing stock. TMBC's literature* makes it clear this was done by courting developers to the site.Fostering this new (i.e. middle class) community has meant bourgeois totems have to be included. So as well as a police station an...
