Test Driving the Tesla Roadster VP 11
2008-09-29 20:25:00 I just got back from flogging Tesla VP 11—short for validation prototype number 11—in a roped-off K-Mart parking lot in Bellevue. The nice Tesla folks made sure to emphasize that this is not a production vehicle, and that it has suffered quite a bit of abuse during its short lifeti
Tesla Roadster Gets Powertrain Update
2008-05-29 17:33:00 JB Straubel over at Tesla Motors have provided an update on the "Touch" blog about the new, enhanced Powertrain 1.5 for the Tesla Roadster. It seems that the very talented engineers working at Tesla have managed to improve the Powertrain in just about every possible way, and along the way reduced the weight and complexity of the system while improving torque and efficiency! If you haven't seen it, the Tesla Roadster is about the coolest looking, highest-performance electric vehicle out there. The Roadster is an all-electric vehicle with the performance and styling of a top-of-the-line sports car, but it doesn't use any fuel. The car has a 0-to-60 time of under 4 seconds and , with the new powertrain, a quarter-mile time in the 12.9 second range. Sure, the Roadster will set you back a cool hundred grand, but that's not out of line with other top-performance cars. And when their WhiteStar sedan comes out (probably in 2010 or 2011) with a price tag in the $50-65,000 range, I e...

Judging the Tesla Roadster and Chevy Volt by different standards
2008-05-09 15:27:00 There has long been an interesting paradox in the realm of cars. For some peculiar reason, people who buy really expensive cars are willing to make more compromises to the foibles of the car and cut them more slack. How else to explain grief that owners of Italian exotics withstood for decades in terms of reliability, ergonomics and build quality. Buyers of mainstream cars that often have far fewer problems as a percentage of the number of vehicles built have a fit at every little thing that goes wrong. That same paradox exists today. The Tesla Roadster by virtue of its price and performance falls into entry level of exotic cars. Despite numerous delays in getting the car into production, and obvious compromised in terms of its functionality, most people have been willing to cut the car and the company a lot of slack, myself included. In my case my experience in the auto industry allows me to understand the difficulty of the task Tesla had. I never actually expected them to meet the...

2008-05-04 03:43:00 Now this is one gorgeous electric car. I've always been put off by electric cars because their design is just so blah. Most of them are compact and looks budget cars.
Tesla Roadster European plans speed up
2008-03-21 18:30:00 It appears that our faithful readers from the old country will soon have a reason to bust out that sack full of euros stashed under their beds. Because of the falling value of the Yankee greenback in relation to the euro, Tesla has decided to move up their plans to sell its amazing electric sports car in Europe. Although the factory in England has started cranking them out, the entire production scheduled for this year has already been sold, so orders taken will be for the 2009 model. Launching the car in Europe will mean that a whole different set of rules and regulations will need to be adhered to. Tesla's sales and marketing guy, Darryl Siry, is quoted by Innovation Beat, from whence I garnered this information, as saying, "Emissions regulations we have no problem meeting." I expect the other red tape to take a bit of time and effort. Because they are seen to be particularly friendly to electric vehicles, Sweden and Norway (the Danes are going to be pissed!) have been selected a...

Revisiting the Tesla Roadster as a track car: it could happen
2008-01-29 05:55:00 click the Roadster for a high res galleryA few weeks back we addressed the question of using the Tesla Roadster as a track car. Discussing the topic with Tesla VP Darryl Siry during my first ride-along in the car, he made it clear that the Roadster in its current form wouldn't be very suitable for track use. The sustained loads on the electric motor in that kind of situation would cause the air-cooled unit to get too hot. When the temperature rises, the power electronics module (PEM) automatically cuts the power output. However, the arrival of DriveTrain 1.5 could provide the ideal basis for a track special. With the air-cooled motor soon to be supplanted by a liquid-cooled version, capable of sustaining significantly higher continuous power levels, the single biggest stumbling block may have been overcome. In combination with the upgraded PEM, the only other major issue to address would be the vehicle weight. To that end, Tesla engineers are contemplating a Roadster 120, with 120 ...
Tesla Roadster Receives U.S. FMVSS Certification
2008-01-27 23:40:00 The green-minded enthusiasts who have put down deposits on Teslas have one less concern weighing on their minds today. In the wake of recent organizational upheaval, Tesla Motors released some good news for those eagerly awaiting the electric sports car's pending introduction. After a final round of crash tests, the Tesla now meets U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). With that hurdle cleared, the car officially meets DOT and EPA requirements to be sold in the United States. Production is scheduled to begin March 17 of this year.According to Malcolm Powell, Vice President of Vehicle Integration with Tesla, crash testing was only part of the gauntlet of tests the Tesla had to pass: windshield defrosting, mirror coverage and EPA Clean Air Act requirements were also necessary. Specific details of how well the carbon-fiber-bodied Tesla crashed haven't been released, but the company announced that it did pass and that the car has been approved for U.S. sale, there...

Would the Tesla Roadster be a suitable track car?
2007-12-30 00:05:00 Tesla Marketing VP Darryl Siry and the Tesla RoadsterWhen I went for a ride with Darryl Siry in the Tesla Roadster following the Los Angeles Auto Show, we discussed a wide array of topics relating to the car. One of those areas was the use of the Roadster as track car. Given the heritage of the chassis being derived from the Lotus Elise and the frequent use of the that car on the track, it would seem to be an obvious application. Unfortunately for buyers of the Roadster, that won't be a viable option. The power electronics module (PEM) monitors a variety of the sensors in and around the battery pack and the air-cooled AC motor. If anything starts to get too hot, the PEM will automatically start limiting the power flow from the battery until things cool down. The result is that after a only a couple of laps of all-out track running, the motor will start to heat up and performance will be limited. On the road in real world conditions this won't be a problem, because conditions gener...
Tesla Roadster facing more delays, EPA ratings slip
2007-12-14 09:57:00 Tesla Roadster facing more delays, EPA ratings slip Tesla will further delay production of its Tesla Roadster due to transmission problems. The all-electric Roadster was originally slated to begin production in September, but development delays have pushed back the production date to the first quarter of 2008. The latest round of problems could even push that date back further. According to sources familiar with the project, the current transmission can't withstand the torque of the electric engine while shifting gears. Two of Tesla's suppliers are scrambling to find a solution, but it remains unknown when the problem will be solved. Despite the defect, Tesla has already built the first Roadster and will deliver it to its buyer. However, the customer is being warned that the transmission will fail within the first few thousand miles. Tesla is contemplating fitting the first batch of Roasters with the faulty transmissions with the intent to replace them with the new ...

EVS23: Tesla Roadster sittin? under a SolarCity roof
2007-12-07 03:02:00 I know that there can really never be enough pictures of the Tesla Roadster around. While a glut of pictures are fine, repeating the same information over and over gets annoying. So, when I stopped by the Tesla Motors and SolarCity booth at EVS23 this week, I asked company representatives to talk about the solar option for everyone's favorite all-electric sports car. We know all about the car already. SolarCity, like Tesla Motors, benefits from Elon Musk being behind the scenes. But, as my interview subjects – Tesla's Anil Parany (whose card I lost and I know I've misspelled his name. My apologies) and SolarCity's Ben Tarbell and Jim Brady – make clear, a SolarCity roof like the one on display can benefit anyone who can plug in a car. The roof will be sold as an option with the Roadster as well as on its own. Listen to the full story here (8 min, 5.8 MB) At the end of the clip, you can hear Anil wish Martin Eberhard, who recently "transitioned" from the board of dire...
Print magazines get to actually drive the Tesla Roadster

In the latest entry over on the Tesla blog Darryl explains the reasons why they decided let print journalists be the first to have time at the wheel. This week the top dogs from the big snail mail publications are out thrashing the two newest validation prototypes in Northern California. It will probably be February before you can find out what Kim Reynolds, Csaba Csere (pronounced chubba chedda) think of this little battery-powered missile. We've been promised our chance at the wheel soon, but until then you can check out Darryl's words and my own impressions from the right hand seat.[Source: Tesla Motors]
Martin Eberhard says the complexity of engineering the Tesla Roadster keeps
2007-11-20 04:41:00 If you're one of our readers who likes to point out the many high hurdles that Tesla Motors has yet to scale in their quest to bring the Tesla Roadster to market, you're not along. In fact, Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard is right there with you. Eberhard says that, when it comes to engineering the Roadster, "what keeps me up at night is the complexity of the problem." The quote comes from the Unofficial Stanford Blog, which also has a video of the Tesla HQ and spends some time with the very same Roadster prototype (#10) that our own Sam Abuelsamid recently took for a test ride.Min Liu and Nir Eyal of iinnovate spoke with Eberhard and reveal that he's been driving since he was 13. That's the age when he learned to drive on a farm. Pop psychology might tell us that the Roadster is the fulfillment of a lifetime of wishing the vehicle you're in could go faster while keeping the air and water clean so the crops can grow. Or something. [Source: The Unofficial Stanford Blog, h/t to ...

Tesla Roadster Crash Test
2007-10-16 12:46:00 About Tesla Roadster you already know is the hottest electric car out there. But will the Tesla pass the crash test? According to the latest tests it seems that yes.In the 30 mph head on collision crash test the Tesla Roadster behaved as expected (as the computer model predicted) and the G forces were as expected. After the crash the doors could still be opened. In the 30 mph off set crash they used a 30 degree off set and the test was successful test, meaning that the passengers survived. Also successful was the 30 mph side impact.

Tesla Roadster confirm battery 245 mile range
2007-09-29 19:35:00 The new CEO of Tesla Motors, Michael Marks, has sent out a letter to all customers on their waiting list confirming that Tesla's engineers have recovered of most of the range that had been lost to weight increases and other engineering changes. The Roadster has now been validated on the EPA combined cycle with a range of 245 miles (252 city and 236 highway) per charge. They have also made structural improvements with one of the validation prototypes now having passed the side impact test that caused problems for an earlier version. However, prospective buyers will have to wait longer for their cars. Tesla's updated production schedule will see them only building a small number of production cars by the end of this year with the first fifty being delivered in the first quarter of 2008. Once production increases they plan to produce a further 600 cars by the end of the 2008 model year.>> Further details and wallpaper images of the Tesla Roadster
Tesla Roadster?s range back up to 245 miles? further delays?
2007-09-24 01:13:00 Buried in the New York Times electric vehicle article that Lascelles wrote about the other day was a little tidbit about Tesla. After originally promising a range of 250 miles per charge when they first announced the Roadster, Tesla had to back off last spring to 200 miles. Engineering changes resulting from the extensive testing caused an increase in weight and a slight drop in battery capacity. The Times article says the Roadster's range has been revised back upward to 245 miles. They also say Job 1 has been pushed back four months. A quick check with Tesla Marketing VP Darryl Siry yielded a polite no comment, but Darryl did say an official announcement will be coming in the next few days following a program update to customers on Monday. We'll skip the speculation for now and just wait for the official word from new CEO Michael Marks.[Source: New York Times, Tesla, thanks to Joseph for the tip]
